CHAPTER 11 ALYSSA EDWARDS Two weeks later "I don't want to stay idle let me at least get a job down the street..." "No. I don't want you to work. I'll save up some money and you'll get back to school." Frank told me and I didn't want to argue much. He sat down and ate his breakfast but he kept his gaze on me. "What job are you going for anyways?" He asked making me turn.  "A waitress. Why are you asking me?" "You've gained weight. You need to work some off." He pointed and I stared down at myself. "Okay." Later that day, I went down the road, deciding to go in one of my brother's black tee shirts and army shorts. I had tied my hair into a messy bun and had tucked them under a black cap and had dressed shabbily like a tomboy. I knocked lightly on the door and walked in. The little restaurant had just opened so there were no customers around. The guy there was wiping the counter. He had brown hair and black eyes. He seemed to be in his late twenties. "Oh, hello, good morning?" I waved and he turned and gave me a smile. "Good morning." "I'm here to see if I can get the job...waitress..." I stuttered. "You mean waiter?" He corrected and I frowned. "What?... I'm a girl..." I laughed nervously, taking off my cap. His eyes widened in realization and he laughed too. "Of course. There's an apron over there." He pointed and I raised an eyebrow at him. "No interview?" "I don't think I need to since I really need a hand, we'll have to talk about that one later." He explained and I nodded, doing as told. Evening "Thanks a lot for coming over to help, Alyssa," Tony said as we closed down the shop. "Oh, it's really nothing. I just look forward to getting hired. I kinda need the job a lot." I told him putting my hat back on. "I promise to recommend you to grandma when she comes. She's sassy but she'll give you the job." He smiled and I nodded, smiling back. My smile didn't reach my eyes because I was feeling so tired and weak. I did a lot of errands today, yes that could be it. "I'll have to head home now, Tony, see you later." I patted him on the back and headed home. I walked home still not feeling well so I decided to see the doctor tomorrow. Maybe it's something serious. I was stopped by a familiar voice. "Let's talk, Alyssa." *** Nick Troy had bought us drinks and we sat up the roof of some building, looking down at the cars passing and how the streets were decorated with lights. I took a long gulp of my diet coke and took in a deep breath. It was really refreshing. "How have you been?" He asked, not turning to look at me. "Have you spoken with your friend lately? I bet he's told you everything." I snorted. His head snapped in my direction. "Has anything happened between you guys? What have I missed these few weeks?" He questioned and I was puzzled. "You guys haven't spoken?" "We have but he refused to go into details. He's even out of the country. What happened between you guys?" "What exactly did he tell you?" Talking about him on a night like this was making me somehow uncomfortable but I needed to talk to someone about this. Nick brought his beer to his lips and scoffed. "I wish, well. Daniel refuses to speak about you. Why what happened?" That sentence hurt. What did I do? The only mistake I made was thinking he was a decent guy. "I no longer owe him and that's what's important, Nick." Nick turned to me in disbelief. "You paid your debts? How?" I snorted and looked away, trying to hide the tears that were welling up in my eyes once again. it's been weeks since that incident and I had been doing just fine before Nick came here. His presence reminded me of Daniel. Even though they were friends, their resemblance was pretty significant. I stood up, brushing the dirt off my army shorts. "I have to get going, Nick. See you later." I told him as he stood up too. "Good night, Alyssa." ________ Thanks for reading
