4. Protecting our mate

Peter's p.o.v

I knew Derick desperately wanted his mate, I too honestly wanted her, but thinking about our past and how she was mistreating us I just couldn't act as though I was okay.

I ran for hours trying to get rid of the anger I felt until it was nightfall, I shifted back to my human form and sat down near the lake, then it hit me, the fear of losing my mate, I was just a foolish bastard.

In the past I had lost it all, my mother was gone and the pack was no longer my family, if I was to lose her now I couldn't survive and that made me break down and cry as Derick howled in pain, I cried for what felt like forever when I felt better I stood up fearing I could attract unwanted Rogue's attention, I shifted back into my wolf and ran back.

After an hour of running I picked up a sweet scent ahead which I knew too well, it was my mate's and it filled the whole place.

"Why was she in the Forest at night, the woods were not safe," I thought as Derick whimpered.

"Derick, what's wrong?" I asked, then I heard it, my mate's cries and scream.

I quickly ran to her in fear that she might be in danger, when I reached where she was I found her laying on the ground crying out in pain, Derick whimpered seeing that our mate was in pain.

she was screaming loudly and sobbing, I quickly transformed into my human form and moved closer, I pulled her in my arms and embraced her, I knew she was about to experience her first shift and she really needed me by her side to help her ease the pain away, her sobs slowly lessened.

I lowered myself near her ear and whispered.

"Don't fight it, even if it hurts"

She relaxed and weakly clung on to me as she purred softly making Derick relax too, I gently kissed her forehead and stayed by her side for almost two hours, she slowly began shifting in her wolf, I watched amazed as her bones rearranged themselves, she shifted into the most beautiful white wolf with black spots.

She whimpered as I closely looked at her.

"You are beautiful," I said as Derick purred in agreement.

I knew she was happy, but I needed to say what I was about to say.

"But I'm sorry, I can't be with you," I said as Derick growled in anger.

She whimpered over and over as I tried to act unaffected.

"Peter I want her, we need her" Derick growled.

"I'm not rejecting you, Mara, I had known you were my mate for two years now, but I just don't want you with me," I said sadly.

She shifted into her human form, she couldn't hold back her tears, my heart was aching seeing her in tears.

"Our mate is in pain" Derick growled, he really was making it hard for me.

"Peter I'm sorry I was a jerk to you, I bullied and insulted you, I know I don't deserve your forgiveness but please don't reject us, I don't care if you are an omega" she cried as I sighed.

"Mara ...

I stopped talking when I heard the leaves and twigs snap and make noises.

"Mara, get behind me," I said while looking around, I picked up the scent of two Rogue's close by.

"Peter I'm sorry" she pleaded.

"Mara get behind me!" I commanded her using my alpha voice that I vowed to never use no matter what.

She tensed in shock, she had a lot of questions in her eyes but she quickly submitted and went behind me.

Two Rogue's came from the trees and approached us, Derick was more than ready to take over and fight, he had anger he wanted to release, but before I could let him take over, Mara stepped in front of me in a protective stance.

"Peter you are an omega, let me protect you," she said then shifted into her wolf before I could stop her.

she jumped in front of the Rogue's and they attacked quickly pinning her down as one of them bite her shoulder, she whimpered in pain causing Derrick to snap out of control.

"Mara!" I screamed as Derick took over shifting in his wolf form, he went into alpha mode and tore the Rogue's into pieces, after making sure they was no longer any threat left he let me take back control, I moved closer to Mara who was in pain and licked her face to comfort her.
