Chapter 20 Vice President Margaret Adler climbs the steps to the ceremonial platform, which overlooks Red Square, and follows an entourage of Russian dignitaries led by President Smirnov. She takes up her assigned position, at the left side of the podium, and gazes out at the thousands of people gathered to hear their beloved President. St. Basil’s Cathedral frames the regal event, and a large military band plays with patriotic enthusiasm. President Smirnov strides with authority to the podium. When he nears the microphone, the synchronized applause of thousands drowns out the drums and cymbals, the trumpets and saxophones.
