Chapter 16 When the world leaders return to the main conference room, the space fills with lighthearted banter. Margaret smiles and waits until everyone gets seated. “Thank you, all. War may have shaped our histories, but given the joviality in this room, we are aware of the common humanity that we share. “We all have stories, not of greatness, but of horror, not of friendships but of hate. Wars begun and ended, entire populations affected, winners few. Today, we create an alternative history. I invite President Smirnov to come forward.” The Russian President adjusts his collar, clears his throat, offers a quick glance across the room, and walks with purpose to the front of the area.
