CHAPTER 26

1634 Words
DEEP REGRETS NATHAN Alex and Tyler give me worried looks as I continue to pace the floor of the office. Their unease mirrors my own. “Dude, what’s eating you and Declan up?” Alex asks, pushing the papers in front of him away. The office feels stifling, the air heavy with my unresolved anxiety. Unable to concentrate on the work I have to do, I forced Alex and Tyler to handle it. Since I came back from the mall with Jessica, I have not been myself. The image of her confused and hurt face haunts me. I regret taking her into Christabel’s shop. I still believe that the gold-digging wolf told my mate something, and it’s all my fault. Not just because I took her there, but because I was intimate with Christabel. It was just once, and like the others, she refused to get it into her thick skull that it was a one-time thing with no strings attached. What was it with these women and me? Is the pull of my name, riches, and pack that attractive that they would do unpleasant things to get me? Thankfully, none of them has taken in, which would have been a bigger problem than what I am facing right now. “Nate,” Tyler calls me, breaking through my spiral of thoughts. “It’s Jessica,” I start, taking my seat. “Something happened while we went shopping yesterday.” I glance briefly at them. “I took her to Christabel’s shop.” Alex whistles, dropping his pen, while Tyler gently closes his eyes. “Not to judge you, but why would you do that?” Alex asks, his voice a mix of disbelief and concern. “I was carried away. I wanted her to have nice things,” I say, passing my fingers through my hair. “I just wanted her to be happy.” “I’m sure she was happy that you took her shopping. So, what happened?” Tyler, always the calm one, asks me with no judgment. “I think Christabel said something to her while she took Jessica to the changing room.” “And?” Alex prompts. “She asked me about Christabel, and I told her the truth. I had to,” I say, their expressions turning from surprise to understanding. “You did the right thing, Nate. Keeping secrets could cause her to not trust you if she found out later,” Tyler nods, offering a reassuring smile. “Thanks, Tyler,” I nod in relief at him. “Is that why you’re worried?” Alex asks. “I also had to come clean about my other escapades when she asked if I had been with other women and wondered why I didn’t wait for her...” “She said that?” Alex interrupts, eyebrows raised. “Yes,” I nod and continue to the part where she asked me the question that sent me crazy with fear and anger. “What?!” both of them exclaim at the same time. Alex bursts out laughing, his body shaking. “Luna is surely an interesting one.” “She really has a lot to learn.” “You know one thing I regret right now?” I tell them. “I regret that I ever had anything to do with all those women. The only thing they have brought me is problems. Now my mate thinks she should also do the same since she won’t have feelings for those men.” “It’s scary, man,” Alex muses. “I can imagine how you’re feeling.” “That’s why I don’t want any unmated male to be at the dinner tonight.” “Isn’t that too much?” Tyler reasons with me. “How about you talk to her about this?” “She’s pretending to be asleep every time I check on her. Obviously, she doesn’t want to talk to me.” “Who doesn’t want to talk to you? Jessica?” Cara asks, opening the door to my office without knocking. “How many times have I asked you to knock before coming in?” “And how many times do I have to tell you it won’t work?” she says saucily, walking to the fridge to pick a drink. “So, why is Jessica not talking to you? Didn’t she like shopping with you? I told you to let mom and me take her, but you refused. Now, she’s not talking to you. You probably got her the wrong sizes or chose clothes that covered all her body from head to toe. You just couldn’t control your possessiveness, could you?” she rails out. Tyler and Alex burst out laughing, unable to hold themselves. “Cara, your imagination has never disappointed me,” I tell her. “My mate loved everything I got for her.” “Then why is she pretending to be asleep upstairs?” she perches on the edge of my table. “Most girls would be trying on everything you bought her, not pretending to be asleep. What happened?” I share a brief look with the guys. “I took her to Christabel’s shop.” Cara spits out her drink, disgusted. “How could you?! You took her to your fling’s shop? That’s disrespectful. She’s your Luna, Nate!” Shame spreads through me like wildfire. Cara is right. I disrespected my mate and allowed Christabel to disrespect her. also. Shit! “Did they meet? Knowing that cunny she-wolf, I’m sure she would have said or done something to expose your fling.” I drop my face on the table with a heavy sigh. Declan keeps growling at me. He hasn’t stopped since we left the damn shop. “I need your help, Cara. I think Christabel said something to her because Jessica became quiet after we left the place. I’ve checked on her, but she doesn’t want to talk about it.” “Did you ask her?” I nod. “She’s also thinking if she can be with other men too.” Cara spits out her drink again, wetting herself as she laughs. “She said that? That’s some fire in your mate.” “It’s not funny, Cara,” I warn her. “Are you going to help me or not?” “Help you how?” “Speak to her girl-to-girl, please.” “Why should I help you? You clearly would have continued if you hadn’t found her.” That was exactly what Jessica said. “I know, and I regret that. Will you help me or not?” “Only on one condition,” she smiles, batting her lashes. “What?” “Invite the warriors to the dinner.” “Not going to happen. I am ordering every unmated male to not attend.” “Good luck with your mate then,” she drops the drink can and shuffles out of the room. “You should have told her yes and not done it,” Alex scolds me gently. “And have her throw a tantrum? I can’t wait for her to find her mate. Maybe an alpha who can handle her,” I sigh in frustration as I am back to square one. “What do I do?” “You could ask your mother for help,” Tyler suggests. “And have her give me a lecture? No, please,” I rub my forehead, thinking of what else to do. “Send a makeover team to help her prepare,” I jump to my feet to get some air. “I will see you guys later.” I exit my office, brooding over what to do. My feet drag me toward the mansion where Jessica is, and I change my plans. I want to see her and explain everything to her. The omegas are busy preparing the place for the dinner tonight. I hope Jessica will love the decorations and food. I asked them to prepare as much food as possible because I want her to have a taste of everything. As I reach the top of the stairs, I can smell Cara’s scent strongly. Voices are coming from my room, and I know it’s Cara’s and Jessica’s. Not wanting them to scent me, I mask my scent and listen to their conversation. A smile breaks out on my face when I hear their conversation. I sigh in relief and press against the wall, listening to their conversation. My mate is jealous that other women have touched me. She wanted me pure for her. Inside, I begin to curse myself for being with those women because my mate thinks I can leave her for them. She thinks she’s not beautiful enough. If only she knew how her beauty keeps me spellbound every time I see her. I love how her blue eyes glow when she looks surprised. The softness of her voice when she speaks or giggles—a voice that makes the entire world stand still for me. Or her touch on my skin with the sparks and tingles of the mate bond. I can’t wait to feel her lips on mine and hear her scream my name in pleasure when I finally make her come. She doesn’t know what she does to me. The others can never be compared to her. Because she’s the best of them all. My Luna and mate. Lost in my thoughts, the door opens and Cara walks out. We share a silent moment, gazing at each other. “Thank you,” I say and wrap her in a hug. “The things we do for family,” she chuckles at the same time the pack's siren starts to wail. We are under attack!
