Embry
I sat at the kitchen table strumming my nails against the stone top, my eyes stayed focused out the kitchen window keeping an eye on the driveway for any sign of Kane's car. Kala and Blair sat opposite drinking their coffee's quietly eyeing me now and again, they knew I was pissed! That I was close to exploding, not on them I was going to save that part for Kane.
"How are you Embry," Kala asked nervously
"I've been better" I answered taking a mouthful of my coffee, slowly placing my cup back onto the counter.
I suddenly picked up on someone's presence, I could hear movement outside, inhaling slowly as the sound neared I knew it was Ryder, this irked me more, not because it was Ryder but because it wasn't Kane!
The truth was this was the third time in under two weeks I had been sat here waiting for my so-called 'mate' to come home. Kane had never stayed away before, if he had to, I would have understood but the fact he disappears and ignores my calls only adds fuel to my already blazing fire.
Hearing the front door open and close I shifted my eyes towards the doorway of the kitchen waiting for Ryder to enter.
Both women also turned to look at him, As predicted Ryder strolled in not paying any notice to his surroundings, the moment he saw the three of us sat looking at him he stopped moving, I could see the panic in his eyes as he looked at each of us in turn. He gulped loudly just before he spoke “I, errr, I just have to..” He began to stutter as he tried turning and leaving the room.
“Stop right there!” I ordered in a low tone, he paused and slowly turned back around to face me nervously.
“Embry! I didn't see you there” He said in a high pitched tone giving me the fakest smile I had ever seen.
“Save the crap, Ryder! Where is he?” I asked managing to keep my cool.
He closed his eyes and exhaled deeply dropping his head towards the ground “I don't know” he mumbled. I knew he was telling the truth as I listened to his heartbeat it didn't falter once, I didn't want to admit it to myself but I already knew Ryder wouldn't know Kane's whereabouts, I had noticed he was in the dark these days just as much as I was.
“Sorry Ryder, I didn't mean to snap” I apologised, I rubbed my temples and pushed my hair back out of my face.
Ryder walked towards me taking the seat next to mine “What's going on Em? this isn't like you two”
“Maybe you should inform Kane of that!” I sighed as I looked out the window once more.
“Have you heard anything from him since yesterday?” Kala asked.
“Nope, he's ignored my calls, and now his phone is off” I leaned forward to get my own cup taking the last mouthful of coffee.
“Well, maybe he got himself into trouble? Maybe we should go out and look for him?” Ryder suggested.
“Save your energy Ryder, if it's anything like last time he will come home stinking of booze cigarettes and women” I heard gasps coming from all three of them.
“Kane wouldn't do that surely, he's madly in love with you Em” Blair tried to comfort me as she took hold of my hand.
I looked at the sorrow in her eyes “A few weeks ago I would have agreed Blair, this past year he has been perfect, I couldn't have wished for a more perfect soul mate, But something's changed, He just doesn't seem to want to be here with me anymore” I could feel my chest tighten, I took a deep breath, I wasn't letting my emotions show, as much as I wanted to I needed to keep a level head.
Ryder cupped the bottom of my chin and turned my head towards him, “I may not know where he is Em but I do know how much you mean to him, you have to stop thinking like this, do you really think he would spend all this time fighting for you, to have you here where you belong if he was just going to leave when he got bored of you? No, he wouldn't, so please stop thinking this, he loves you!”
“well regardless of what he feels I don't intend on waiting here like a perfect little housewife, he can get stuffed, I'm going to go into town,” I said as I got up “I'll see you guys later” I smiled masking the anger that was still deep inside me.
Ryder
I looked at the expression on Kala and Blair's faces, I knew they were thinking the exact same as me but none of us said a word until we heard Em's car leave down the driveway.
“It's the curse!” Blair said slamming her hand down on the table. “You said it wouldn't affect him” She looked at Kala.
“It shouldn't, they are true mates, it should have killed the curse” Kala began to defend herself.
“OK, OK!!” I shouted gaining both their attention before another argument was about to erupt. “We don't know for sure, all we know is something is going on, I think we need to try and get to the bottom of it before it does some real damage between them.”
Both girls nodded “ok” they answered together, “You need to try and get close to him find out what's going on in his head” Kala pleaded.
“That's easier said than done, Embrys not the only one Kane's been pushing away!” Blair said before I even had a chance to explain.
“What?” Kala questioned.
“Yeah, he's not needed me for any of these strange journeys he's taking, when I ask him about them he just tells me to mind my business,” I confirmed what Blair had said.
“So what do we do now?” Kala asked.
“I think maybe the best one to speak to is Rose, she's seen this happen before, if it is the curse then she has more experience with it than we do”
“Yeah, I agree I think we should head to see her now while it's quiet here” We all agreed and got up following Blair's orders and left to go and see her.
Embry
I wasn't entirely sure where I was heading in town all I knew was I had to get out of that house, I was beginning to drive myself crazy overthinking everything, I couldn't help but worry if it was the curse, but Kala said it had been broken, we were true mates so it shouldn't have activated. If it had, does that mean now he was no longer in love with me? Did he even want to be mated to me anymore?
The convoy of cars approaching me travelling in the opposite direction caught my attention, I felt him before I saw his car, it was Kane. His car led four others all very similar to Kane's black jeep. As he neared his scent became sour, it wasn't right like it had mixed with something, I couldn't quite work out what it was.
I focused on him as he was about to pass me, expecting him to see me I slowed down slightly. But I wasn't ready for what I did see, a gut-wrenching pain shot straight through me as I watched him laugh along with the blonde-haired woman seated next to him, I watched the other cars pass by me all following him.
I felt my wolf stir with the anger I was more than ready to turn this car around and go and rip that b***h apart, who was she? And why was she looking all cosy with my man!
“Stay focused Embry, just keep driving, we can go back and kill him later!” I told myself, trying to calm myself down and focus on where I was heading in town. A minute barely passed as my wolf got the better of me, “Sod this!” I stated as I swung the steering wheel around turning the car in the middle of the road and driving after them.
