10. Unhelpful

I sleep perfect and wake up early. So early, Tre is still asleep. I smile and rub my fingertips up and down his d**k until it gets hard.

A few hours later, we get up for real. We take a shower, and he helps me into a queen dress before we go to the morning room.
Marcus looks at him. "She still young?"
"I don't think so. Confused about time though."
"Tre had a good morning. Like, 4 hours before morning."
Tre winks at me. "It was the best morning ever." He gives me a kiss and helps me onto the stool.
Half an hour later, we go to Dipak's office.
I sit in my spot and everyone else sits in theirs. The place is a lot more empty now. Then Elek and Elroy come in and sit down. Dipak starts talking about what happened and how to stop it from happening again. I stare at Nikolas's empty chair and zone out.
Dipak drops a book on the table. He is staring right at me.
"I'm done for the day." I get in the elevator and leave.
I go to Nikolas's old office. The drawers are out of the desk and file cabinets. There are some papers dumped everywhere. There wasn't much in it, so it's not that bad.
I put the drawers back. Then I put the couch back together. No doubt Thora searching.
Then I go through papers and make a stack of trash on the floor. There's nothing important in the papers. Some notes from the meetings. Ideas about China. Nothing that implied he was going to try and kill us.
I pull the papers out of the trashcan. There are wrinkled meeting notes. I find a letter that doesn't even have words. It seems to be in some kind of code. I lay that on the desk. Then I pull out a letter addressed to Nadine. I uncrinkle it.
-I'm sorry. If I had known you. Or known how much you would mean to me. I would have made everything different. I am a monster. I have done horrible things. Things that you would never forgive. It would be pointless to tell you the truth or ask you to accept me. Ever since we got here, I've pretended to be someone I'm not. I've tried. But my father is going to act against your castle. I will not hurt your people or your castle. I will protect you as best as I can. I'll make sure he doesn't kill anyone. When I tell you I love you. I do mean it. Please don't doubt that. But you are too good for me. Every time I close my eyes, I see your smile. I see your eyes. I feel your fingertips on my skin. I wish it was me you could love and not this fake person I created. I wish I wasn't a monster. I wish I was someone you could be proud of.-
I wonder about his apartment. I fold the letter as best as I can. That may be all I ever get to remember him by. Someone clears their throat and I shove it down my boobs before I turn around.
Dipak smiles at me. "Find anything?"
"Letter in the trashcan that seems to be like a code. It's not words." I hand it to him. "Everything else seems normal I guess."
"I'll keep it in my office. You want to look at the other 5 offices? See if you can see anything like this in them?"
"5?"
"The 2 advisors too."
"Of course."
He pulls the letter out my boobs.
"I can't get anything by you."
"Woman, wear more fabric." He reads it and hands it back.
"I know. But it's all I'll ever have."
He kisses my head. "Don't leave it in your boobs. You'll lose it within the hour."
I go through the other offices. The advisors seemed to actually be doing their jobs. The princes didn't seem to be doing anything. I find 8 coded letters between the offices though.
Everything is so perfect and spotless in the dad's office. Nothing in the trash even. He must have cleaned it before he acted. The drawers were empty. They are on the floor from Thora. I put them back and see a paper in the desk under where the drawer would sit. It's in code again, but it's different.
I take everything to Dipak's office. "I found all these between the 5 offices. I wrote on the back what office they were in. But this I found in the dad's office. It was under where the drawer would have sat."
"I think we have the key, Frode."
"Possibly. We'll work on it."
"You may want to send someone in to take apart the desks. The dad was especially good at hiding stuff. There is definitely more I could have missed. And the dad's office was completely cleared out. Where ever he may have cleaned it out, it may be worth searching."
"Thank you sweetheart." He kisses my head.
"Of course."
I go over to Nikolas's apartment. I was never even here while he was alive.
I put the sitting room back together. Then the dining room. It's castle issued stuff. He never planned on staying. I check the wall safe. There's 5k in it with some papers. I see a little box in the back. The box is black, and the safe is black. I can see how that was missed. I almost missed it myself.
It's a ring. It's a gold band with a heart shaped purple stone on it. A couple of little diamonds beside it. There's nothing else with it. I start crying hard. I know it was for his girlfriend. He never gave me anything. I close the box and put it back.
The papers are property papers. At least 10 different properties. I go through the kitchen and put the drawers back. Nothing special in there. His office room was empty.
The bedroom is trashed. "Thank you, Thora." I put the bed together and check every spot something could be in. Then I hang the clothes up. After that, I put the dresser back together. I end up finding a card in the top drawer. The card has my name on it.
"Nadine, For you my mate, my love, my everything. I love you so much. I never knew I could love someone this much. My heart is yours. I hope you think of me when you wear the ring."
Then I cry again. It is my ring. Then I stop because I know this was part of his act and not how he actually felt. I feel so f*****g crazy and confused. I rub my eyes and put the card in my boobs. I'll get the ring on my way out. I wish I had more to remember a mate by, but I guess I'm lucky to have something.
The last bedroom has nothing in it. But one of the roses I painted on the boat that day. The painting is hanging on the wall. I stand there wondering why he kept that. I pull it off the wall and there is a hole in the wall behind it. "Nice 1 Thora. The 1 painting you didn't pull down in the whole building."
I pull out a little box. "Let me guess, you were stealing my jewelry to smuggle to your girlfriend." It's a key. "Well that's not what I expected." I pull out a paper. It's written in code. "Well that's entirely unhelpful, Nikolas."
I find a box in the back of the closet. It has a gold bar in it. "Well that's weird. You know you have a vault. Or were you robbing us 1 bar of gold at a time? You have another coded message in there that no one can read? No? Thanks, that's even more unhelpful, Nik."
I put the ring, key, and card in my safe. Then I take the gold bar, coded letter, and property stuff up to Dipak's office.
He takes the gold bar. Then he looks at me weird.
"I don't know. I think he was trying to rob us 1 bar of gold at a time. I found a hole in the wall. I want this decoded right now. And I have these. I think they are properties maybe?"
Frode grabs the papers. "Yes, these are property titles. You own these now. But it doesn't say what they are or what they're used for. But the addresses are listed."
"How do I own them?"
"You're his mate. They go to you."
"Dipak is my mate. He can figure out what they are."
Dipak takes the papers. "There are at least 10 properties here."
Kane stands up. "Let's go see what he was in to."
"This is an address." Tre hands me the decoded paper.
"Thanks boys."
Tre yells, "STOP. No. You're not going alone. We don't even know what it is."
"You don't know what any of those are either. Go do those."
"She does have a point."
Dipak nods. "Yes, but no one is going anywhere alone. Marcus and Kane, with Nadine. Elek and Tre with me. Dracul, Tye, and Gunner. Frode is in command." He splits the papers up.
"Keep an eye on the feathers, boys."
