"Darling, why are you here?" Geneva repeatedly asked, confused as she looked around to search for someone she could think of as his company since it was already night and the weather was bad.
The kid only looked up on her, stared at her with his clear dark eyes, and embraced her legs even tighter, not saying a thing.
Geneva unhesitatingly crouched in front of the kid. "Darling, what are you doing here? How did you come here? Did someone take you here? Weren't we supposed to be home at this time?"
Geneva held the kid's hand. She pulled him to the side to take shelter in the eave of somebody's house. She then carried him up and made him sit on the wooden bench.
"Darling, what happened? How did you end up here?" Geneva asked as she used her sleeve to wipe the droplets of water from the kid's face and hair. Her every move and stare were full of warmth, love, and worry at the same time. "Darling, the weather is so bad. You should not be here right now. Did you run away again?"
Geneva noticed the kid's clothes and she was pretty sure that it was the same clothes he wore during the day. Hence she could confirm that her doubt was right. Aside from running away from this kind of weather, what else could possibly happen to him?
Geneva was already aware of the kid's and his father's attitude. They were both cold, distant, and willful. So whatever reason they had that ended up in such a situation again, she could conclude that both father and son argued over something and neither of them was planning to compromise.
Geneva sighed as she saw the kid lowered his head, shoulders drooping dejectedly.
She cupped his face and raised her head, asking him to look at her. "Darling, look at my eyes and tell me. Did you fight with your father?"
The kid lowered his eyes and nodded, eyes started to well up.
Geneva took a deep breath and bit her lower lip as she endured the pain that was attacking her stomach again and again. "Darling, what you did is wrong. You should not run off when you fight or get angry with your father. Let's say he doesn't treat you well but he is still your father. Whether he is a good or a bad father, you can't just run away. That is not good behavior, especially to kids like you. If something happens to you, your father will be sad." Geneva pressed her head on the kid's forehead, sighing. "Darling, listen to me. You should go home and communicate with your father peacefully. Can you do that?"
The kid nodded.
"Great." Geneva sighed and smiled in relief. She then raised her hand and ruffled his hair. "Great. That's my boy. Alright. It's so cold here. Let me buy something first and then get change in my house. I'm afraid you will get sick when you stay wet. I'll call Allen when we're done."
The kid nodded and smiled. Although he was feeling cold since the rain started to fall, after seeing the woman and hugging her, the coldness he felt was now replaced with the warmth that Geneva gave to him through her gentle and loving care and thoughtfulness.
If he could speak, the way he looked at Geneva, he would probably say 'I wish you're my mother.'
Geneva pointed at the store nearby. "Do you see that store? Let's go there. Darling, I'm sorry. I must make you suffer for a while. I really can't go back home without buying that thing."
The kid just smiled.
"Okay, let's go." Geneva held his hand. The two walked hand in hand under the rain with only the umbrella covering their head.
When they reached the mini-store, Geneva was embarrassed to let the kid see what she was going to buy so she asked him to sit in the waiting chair. The weather was bad so there were only several people inside the store. Hence, she was able to buy the thing she needed so fast and easily.
She was grateful that the kid behaved when he was with her. He did what she asked and waited for her patiently.
Since they were wet, after she bought everything she needed, she called for a taxi to send them back to her apartment.
Geneva was in a hurry to change their clothes into a comfortable and dry one and so she didn't talk much since they returned home. She was also not worried about that thing since the kid was not fond of talking. She only asked him to take a bath by himself and waited for him to finish while preparing a bowl of noodles to eat and a cup of ginger soup.
The kid was also fast. Probably he was worried for her too to let her stay wet for so long.
"You're done?" Geneva placed the ginger soup and bowl of noodles on the table. Then grabbed the clothes lying on the couch that she prepared for him. "Come over here. I will help you put on your pajamas."
The kid who was only wrapped by a towel didn't hesitate to come over. When arrived in front of her, he took the pajamas and stared at them.
Geneva was worried he would not like the pajamas. Well, it was not surprising since the kid was raised by a rich family. Besides, the pajamas were so childish and it would be out of the kid's character if he wore a spongebob printed pajamas. "Darling, give it back to me. I will change them to something else."
The kid shook his head.
"Then, didn't you don't like them?"
The kid shook his head again.
"Then why are you not wearing them?"
The kid looked around and he picked up the paper and pen available on the table. He wrote something that made Geneva amused and sad at the same.
"You're asking me why I have the kid's clothes? You're worried that the owner of the clothes will get angry if you're going to wear them?" Geneva chuckled as the kid nodded. "You don't have to worry about that. That clothes belongs to no one. I am just fond of collecting kid's clothes. It makes me feel I'm not alone. So wear them."
The kid wrote something again.
"You have me now. You won't be alone anymore."
"Oh Darling, you're so sweet. Thank you." Geneva's eyes welled up with the thoughtfulness of the kid.
The kid wrote something else again. "It's cold. Go take your shower now."
"How sweet. I am liking you more and more now." Geneva pointed at the soup and noodles. "Alright. Go and put your pajamas on. Then eat them while I'm showering. I'll be quick inside. When we're done, I will call Allen to tell him you're here so that they won't get worried and get crazy looking for you everywhere."
