"Why? isn't she going to be the one serving the Royals in the carnival too? Oh, and if it's an evening party in the palace, she will be much needed." Prince Warrick muttered, his eyes still at his brother. What did he mean by that?
"Shush!" Prince Luke puts a finger to his lips and looked around. What was going on? What was this party all about? I knew about the carnival, but this party was something new to me.
"Tell Madame Noela I will be at the lighthouse, excuse on my behalf." Prince Warrick announced, lifting the beer and sipping it down his throat as he walked by. Now it was only Prince Luke and me, I felt dizzy around him because he didn't think twice before using his hands.
Before I could be an object to his short temperament, someone joined us.
"Was Warrick here?" Thankfully, Madame Noela came into the view.
“He won't be coming, and it's good as he can't keep track of his words." Prince Luke babbled in haste. It was written all over his face that he didn't enjoy his brother's company.
"I think it is for the best. But I want him in the carnival tomorrow. " Madame Noela added to the situation. "Your father was looking for you." She directed him to the upper floor and as soon as he left, she broadened her shoulders and very gracefully tracked me.
"There will be a party in the evening, I will be having a number of guests. All of them are respectable Royals, no matter what they do, don't resist." the last part of her sentence stuck in my head. There was another messed up concept made by the Royals. Only the men were allowed to have fun with the worker females even if they want to or not, but the women were forbidden from being seen with any of the workers.
Now that this evening party was all females, I wondered what they planned on doing because I'm sure no female was allowed to be seen in bed with a worker.
The rest of the day was pretty boring, to be honest. I changed the bedsheets and after that, I didn't get to work any longer since the sons had left the palace, while princess Flora decided to ride her horses and visit some fields, the remaining two didn't dirty the beds so, I survived the day.
I met my mother and sister back in the corridor after our shifts ended. They were both tired as they were given never-ending chores.
"Mother?" I voiced after her to get her attention. She turned around very slightly to see what was bothering me.
"Is there something wrong?" her voice was soft and calm, I could tell she wanted to leave the palace and run back to her home soon.
Kelly too looked impatient, the frown on her face told me she believed I was delaying.
"Madame Noella told me to serve in the evening party," I uttered in a hushed tone as I held my hands together in front of my body.
"What?" my mother's face went pale; this wasn't the response I was hoping for from her. The issue was, I haven't been recruited to the party nor did I see any party taking place.
"The party is postponed." Kelly, who had only one expression on her face whenever she spoke to me, bored and annoyed, muttered.
"I hope everything is okay?" My mother asked and quickly scanned the area around to make sure nobody was listening to us.
"I heard Prince Luke had fallen sick," Kelly mumbled with a hint of sadness in her tone.
"Oh! I hope he gets well soon." mother's genuine wish for that royal son to get well soon made me roll my eyes so hard that I bet I saw my brain in my skull. I am not saying I was happy that he was sick, but the fact that because of them so many villagers and workers suffered, I bet get well soon wasn't the phrase I would want to say to them.
"Wow! So I'm free to head back home then." I cheered and immediately got hushed down by my mother.
My first day wasn’t as bad as compared to what others have suffered at the hands of these Royals.
The next day was going to be thrilling. The royals wanted a carnival, which means we workers were supposed to decorate the whole village, our beautiful hills, and sights for them to get pleasure from.
I've never been a part of this carnival, but now that I too was a worker, I have granted permission to join and prepare things for their arrival.
After I got back home, I instantly went to bed without eating dinner. I only had a loaf of bread the last day, that too my mother stole from the kitchen during her work to sneak it out for me.
Since morning every villager had been running around, doing the most. I was standing in front of my hut with my mother, who had just come back from the palace.
"Did your father make the tables?" mother yelled as she grabbed the white sheets she had brought from the palace for the tables that were supposed to be filled with food and none of us workers were going to enjoy them.
"He is doing something!" I replied very clumsily. DeShawn and our father have been building wooden long tables to set food and decor for the arrival of the Royals tomorrow.
My family and Kanika's family worked for the Hunters along with a few more villagers, we were getting supplies from the palace to decorate the village for the carnival.
"And what are you doing standing here, wasting your time?" the moment mother's eyes picked up my sight, she shouted in exhaustion.
I felt bad for her, in order to keep the sheets clean, she was really outdoing herself.
"I don't know what to do, give me some work." I shrugged my shoulders and watched her zone out for a few minutes.
"Okay! Take th---" before she could even proceed, Kelly intervened.
"Go to the palace and bring the box containing the Lanterns." she had a thread and some papers in her hand which she was busy crafting for the carnival's decoration.
"Okay!" I was still in the brown dress I wore from two days ago. We weren't given much time to spend on ourselves and weirdly, everybody has adapted well to these outrageous rules.
"Wait! I was giving her work. You go and grab the Lanterns yourself!" mother snapped furiously and glared at Kelly, who looked very upset and shocked too.
"Oh! Is that because you don't want your pretty daughter to get into any trouble? Do you also think I'm too ugly to get anyone's attention?" the pain and sorrow from Kelly's voice shattered my heart for her.
It was no surprise the way she was always been mistreated, the same treatment my friend Kanika had to face. The audacity of Royals to grade the young girls on their looks and punish them for not being too attractive and ruining their mood by showing their faces in wrong timings was too much.
"It's fine, I can go get the Lanterns." if that's what was going to make her feel better, I was ready to do it.
"But!" I heard the resistance from my mother, who I had now left behind as I swiftly escaped the site.
The Hunter palace wasn't far away, in fact, the walk was pretty pleasant in this cloudy weather.
I entered the palace and a sudden feeling of grief took over my body. There was something about this palace that made me feel suffocated. The cheering mood from earlier was ruined the moment I picked up the box of lanterns.
"This is soo--heavy!" I grunted and managed to put the boxes on top of each other and then carefully picked them up. I didn't know they would be this heavy.
I hadn't even left the palace when I gave up, I couldn't take these boxes back to the village on foot.
I can't possibly take one box at a time, that's too much waste of minutes, which I could utilize by helping my brother and father by chopping woods with them.
"Okay--let's give it a tr--y one more time." I puffed air out and picked them up once again. Two steps forward, and the boxes began to wriggle and dance, "No no no!" my heart skipped a beat when one of the three boxes slipped forward.
"No!" I yelled and closed my eyes shut, waiting for the loud shattering of glass to be heard, but nothing happened.
Seemed as if the box didn’t even hit the ground. I opened my eyes to see what was going on and there I saw why the destruction never happened.
Before I stood the tall, dark-haired, prince.
Prince Warrick!
