Mia
Dodging yet another hard swing, I was finally able to land a punch of my own. Growling, he swung again. Missing me again as I danced out of his way, a large smile spreading across my face. “What’s the matter brother, you seem to be off your game today?” He swung again, missing me again as I danced out of his way yet again. A small smile pulled at his lips as he moved, sweeping his foot out, taking me by surprise, and knocking me to the ground. In one quick move, he had me pinned to the ground, and I was tapping out. Standing, he shook his head at me, “You get too cocky little sister.” Standing, I growled at him, dusting my clothes off. “And you let your anger get to you.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I still took you down.” I shook my head. “This time.” Laughing, he tossed me a towel grabbing himself one as well. Rolling my eyes, I grabbed the towel out of the air and started drying the sweat off of me. “The two of you are supposed to be training, not messing around.” Standing in the doorway was Lex, the beta of our pack and the one in charge of making sure the children of the Alpha were able to be capable of protecting themselves and help protect the rest of the pack. It was something that I didn’t fully understand. In other packs, the only offspring of the alpha that was expected to train so much was always the eldest son and heir. But for some reason, my father always insisted that not only his son train but also his daughter. Something about him wanting me to be able to protect myself should I ever need to. He said I was the daughter of an alpha, and one day I could find my mate in another alpha. And he wanted to ensure that I was more than able to help protect that pack as well as my mother was able to protect this one.
Both of us rolled our eyes at Lex, “And I thought you were supposed to be here to train us.” Cayden laughed, throwing his towel at Lex. Lex caught it, shaking his head. “I had a meeting with your father. Which, I am supposed to send the both of you to his office. He wishes to speak with both of you.” Not waiting for either of us to respond, he tossed Cayden’s towel back at him before turning and heading back towards the packhouse. Neither of us said anything as we followed him to the house. It was not normal for our father to request both of us this early in the day. With the both of us turning eighteen soon, he had started showing the both of us more of what he actually did for the pack as far as making sure there was enough money to support everyone. Along with ensuring every one of age was trained in all aspects needed to protect themselves and those who couldn’t take care of themselves. On top of that, he was in charge of making sure everyone got along with each other. He was the one to decide punishment should someone break one of our laws. He was basically a judge, jury, and executioner when it came to most aspects of the pack members. He had to ensure everyone was protected. He was an amazing alpha if you asked me. He was able to accomplish all this while still being a great father. He knew his pack members well. I am sure it helped to have an amazing Luna like my mother by his side. She did way more than other luna’s, which was another reason my father pushed me more than other alphas did their daughters. And because Caydon and I would be eighteen soon, that meant we would soon be able to shift, and if our mates were nearby, we would know. It also meant that Cayden would begin working every day with our father, preparing to take over the pack allowing our parents to retire. This wouldn’t be until one Cayden found his mate if he found them sooner rather than later, and he turned twenty-five. If he didn’t find his mate by his twenty-fifth birthday, he could choose to mate with any she-wolves who hadn’t found her own mate and was willing to do so. Otherwise, he would be forced to take option two and have to wait until his thirtieth birthday to take control of the pack. It also meant that I would have to start the search for my own mate. And chances were he was not within our own pack.
Lex knocked on our father’s office door, waiting a moment to be granted access before opening the door. “Alpha.” He lowered his head before stepping out of our way to allow us into the room. “Ah yes, thank you, Lex.” Standing from his seat behind his desk, he motioned for both Cayden and me to come in and sit in the chairs across from the desk. Once we were in the room, Lex left, shutting the door behind him. “I will be quick. I know you both still need to get changed and get to school.” He was using his alpha tone, which meant he was all business. Neither of us said anything as we sat down. “With your eighteenth birthday coming up, it is a tradition for me to invite other packs. Allowing their alpha’s to bring their daughters for such an event. The hope is that one of their daughters may be my heir’s mate. However, we will, of course, be inviting not only the alpha’s and their daughters but also their sons.” I rolled my eyes slightly. I, for one, was not fully looking forward to being put on display as some prized piece. But I also understood it would be rude for us not to invite everyone. I also knew that if I were unhappy with my mate, my father would stand behind me no matter my decision. “I know Mia. You are not looking forward to this. To be honest, I am not happy about having so many others here as well. Not only is it expected of me to invite our alias but also our enemies. If your mates are within those packs, it is expected that we come to some kind of treaty. So I will need both of you to be on your best behavior. I need you two to set a good example for the others. I also need the two of you to help host those that will arrive early. Today I was notified that the first of our guests would arrive this weekend.” Both Cayden and I groaned at the same time. If they arrived this weekend, then we would have to play nice for a whole week. “Who is coming so early?” Cayden complained, voicing my own complaint out loud. “The Steelclaw Pack.” Cayden sat up in his seat, his eyes wide. “Why are they coming?” I was just as shocked. The Steelclaw Pack was the largest and fiercest pack in the world. They were only slightly bigger than our own pack, and that was only by maybe fifty members or so. They never left Germany, or so it is said. “The heir to the pack is nearing his twenty-fifth birthday and has yet to find his mate. He is set on finding his true mate and is hoping Mia is the one.” I shook my head. “And if I am not?” Shrugging, my father looked right at me. “Then he will have to decide what he plans to do. Look, I think this is the last-ditch effort by the alpha’s son to find his mate before his father decides for him. Unlike me, it is not uncommon for other alphas to choose the future luna for their pack before handing the reins over to their heir. All I am asking is the two of you be polite and help your mother and me to host everyone that is coming.” Slowly we both nodded. “Good, now go get changed and get to school before you are late.”
