My first day at school wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. My friend Lisa is in a classroom near mine, my friend Laurie sits next to me and the classes are easier than I thought.
My mom asked me to wait for her on the bench outside the school on my way out, so as soon as classes are over I sit there and play with my tablet while I wait for her, except a couple of minutes later, Laurie's dad walks up to me and catches my eye.
"Hi, King, your mommy has some business to take care of and asked me to take you home. Come with me," he says and I notice that Laurie is standing next to him, looking at me. I nod without thinking twice because my moms have told me I can trust the Taffy family, so I follow Laurie's dad to their car.
Once we're in there, both me and Laurie sitting in the back, Laurie's dad plays fun songs for us and the three of us sing until we get to his house.
"Your mom will be here to pick you up any minute, King," Mr. Oliver tells me as we get out of the car, "You can go play in the backyard while she gets here."
He doesn't need to tell us twice. Laurie grabs my hand and pulls me into his backyard to start playing.
"They let you run into the woods?" I ask Laurie, looking up at the trees.
"Yes, as long as I don't go too far," he replies and takes off running that way, forcing me to follow him. Laurie runs very, very fast, but when I complain that I can't catch up, he stops and stands in front of me without looking tired.
Laurie is a weird kid, he's only a year older than me but he looks way, way older. My moms say there's something different about him.
"Why are you so tall? Why do you run so fast?" I ask, unable to stop the curiosity I feel every time I see him or think about him.
There are times when I think about him so much that I want to leave my house and run to his to play with him, but my mothers would kill me if I did that again.
"I'm like an adult," he replies and looks in the direction of his house to check that we are alone before returning his gaze to me, "I have a wolf in my head that talks to me... and he wants to talk to you too."
I've seen my mothers' and my family's wolves, it's nothing strange to me. But Laurie doesn't turn into a full wolf. Suddenly black ears prance through his black hair and his green eyes turn black too.
Wow. Oh, wow.
"Hi, Kingsley," he says in a very deep, adult-like voice and before I can even stop thinking about his ears, Laurie reaches over and buries his nose in my head to scent me deeply like my mothers do.
For some reason, once he finishes doing that I command him to get on his knees to do the same with his head and Laurie's wolf does. When he gets on his knees and I can scent his head, his ears are right there for me, so I pet them. The ears wiggle like a puppy's.
"Do you like how that feels, Laurie?" I ask, unable to stop petting him.
"Yes, it's nice," he replies and lifts his head to meet my eyes, "But don't call me Laurie. Call me Alpha."
I agree and so we stay like that for a long while, with Alpha on his knees and me stroking his soft hair and playing with his ears. I feel like time doesn't pass, the only thing that matters is being here.
When I hear a scream calling my name, a growl starts to grow in my throat and Alpha tightens his arms around me, refusing to let me go, until Laurie's dad starts screaming his name and the ears on his body disappear.
"Why are you still standing here like a fool? They're screaming our names!" Laurie complains, shoving me as if I was the one hugging him and he runs off, leaving me alone in the woods.
I have no choice but to run and follow him until I reach his backyard where my mom is waiting for me.
"I don't want to leave," I blurt out as soon as I see her, crossing my arms across my chest so she can see I'm serious, "I want to stay with Alpha."
Oliver's eyes widen like saucers and he turns to look at his son just like when my mom is a second away from scolding me.
"What are you talking about? What alpha?" my mom asks with panic in her voice, reaching over to grab me by the shoulders. She always gets scared so easily, it pisses me off.
"He wanted to get out to talk to King, I’m sorry," Laurie says, looking down at the floor.
"Alpha is Laurie's wolf," I explain and my mom looks confused, "When Laurie lets his wolf out, black ears come out of his head."
"Yes, uh... Laurie is a dominant alpha," Oliver explains to my mom, "That means he presented earlier, but he's completely harmless. And I'd appreciate it if you'd keep it a secret."
"Oh... okay," my mom says, trying to look calm but I can tell she's not, "Sure, I won't say anything about it. Thanks for picking up King. It's time to go, son."
"I don't want to," I repeat, tearing myself from my mom's grip on my shoulders and running to Laurie again hoping he's on my side, except he steps back so I don't get close, "I want to keep talking to Alpha."
"No. Go home," he blurts out with a scowl and before I can realize it, my mom comes up behind me and pulls my ear as punishment, making me squeal in pain before lifting me up in her arms.
She says goodbye to Oliver before carrying me to her car, scolding me for misbehaving.
