INTRO ~ Laurent Taffy

Today is my first day of school and I'm really excited, but I'm also scared because I've never been to any school before, not even when I lived in Delton with just my daddy and Diana.
I walk to school next to my daddy because our house is close and it's a summer day so the weather is nice. As soon as we get to the school, I can see Rio and Alex, next to their dad, too.
I run towards them leaving my dad behind trying to surprise them, but my cousins notice and they attack me. Two against one.
"Hey, hey, none of that!” my Uncle Robbie complains, ruining the fun (as usual), "It's time to go inside. And please, behave yourselves. All three of you. You can't play like that in here."
"Why not?" Rio asks, as always the most rebellious, but with just a look from his dad he shuts his mouth and nods, "Okay.”
"Daddy, I'm going to miss you," I say when my dad finally arrives with us and I reach over to hug his waist tightly, burying my nose on his stomach to catch as much of his daddy scent before I have to leave him alone.
"I'll miss you too, baby. I don't even have to tell you to be good because I know you will," he says confidently and I nod several times. Of course I'm going to be good, I'm the best pup in the whole clan, my daddy tells me that all the time, "Your uncle is right, it's time to go inside."
I don’t really want to, but I have to force myself to walk inside the school next to my cousins, grabbing one of each of their hands to walk, the three of us together. That's the only thing that excites me about this place, being with them. Besides that, I don't like the idea of being here and leaving my dad alone in the house every day.
Who's going to take care of him if I'm not there? Who is going to take care of Diory? What if something bad happens, like when that woman wanted to hurt us?
I don't want to think about that.
"Why are you crying, Laurie?" Alex asks, but I raise a hand to wipe away my tears before more people notice, "We’re going to have fun here."
"Yeah, don't be sad. It's going to be okay." Rio promises, squeezing his hand that is still holding mine, so I smile and nod. I think they are right.
We walk into our classroom together and then I see another familiar face.
"Hello, Kingsley!" I greet him when I see his white head standing out among everyone. King smiles big, his little eyes getting even smaller from his big smile and he waves to me. The desks are two-person tables and my cousins already sat together, of course, so I hurry to sit behind them, next to King, "I'll sit here."
"Okay," he agrees, without removing his smile.
I wait nervously for the teacher to arrive and when she does, we have to introduce ourselves one by one. When I stand up, everyone says things about me in hushed tones, which makes me frown.
"M-my name is Laurent Taffy, my parents and family call me Laurie. I like to draw and run with my cousins," I manage to say, ignoring the comments about my height. After me, it's King's turn.
Now the comments are of disbelief at his hair and his very pale skin.
"My name is Kingsley Seong. I like to play games and... and dance." he replies, sounding nervous. The teacher smiles and nods, letting him sit down. King looks at me and lets out air, "That was hard."
I laugh and nod.
King is the most interesting kid I've ever seen and for some reason, my wolf is excited and wants to come out and play with him, but I clench my fists and do as my father has told me, concentrate and try to talk to him.
'You can't come out now. You can't. You'll get me in trouble.'
'I don't care, I want to talk to him.'
What? I don't understand my wolf, he's so weird. I shake my head and spend the rest of the class trying to ignore King.
Alex and Rio talk the whole class, the teacher scolds them many times and even I have to kick their chairs to get them to shut up and listen to the class. I don't want to get scolded because of them.
"When you hear that bell, it means it's time to go to lunch. Please get up and leave in order, starting with this row," the teacher explains, pointing to the first row closest to the door, "Remember, you can't run in the hallways."
When it's my row's turn, King and I get up at the same time. As soon as I see King start walking out, my legs follow him helplessly. Alex and Rio are waiting for me, but I keep walking behind King.
"Hey, where are you going?" I ask when I see him walking with intent and looking for someone in the halls.
"I'll look for my friend Lisa, she's in second grade," he tells me, turning only slightly towards me. Alex and Rio catch up to me, but I ignore them, "See you back in the classroom."
Oh. I wanted to keep hanging out with him.
Disappointed, I let my cousins take me to the cafeteria and we eat our lunches together. My dad sent me two big slices of the pizza we had for dinner last night and the twins brought a weird thing with veggies, so I tease them, but I still share some of my pizza with them because I feel bad. Uncle Robbie always tries to feed us boring stuff, so the twins love going to eat at my house, because my dad is fun and always buys yummy stuff for us, even though we have to keep it a secret from uncle Robbie.
An hour later when we return to the living room after playing in the backyard for a while, I sit and stare at the door, unable to move my eyes until a white head appears and my wolf gets excited again, which is a bit annoying.
'Let me get out. Let me say hello.'
'No! Father said not to let you out at school!' I tell him, closing my eyes so I can concentrate enough to be able to keep him in my mind.
If my ears come out in front of everyone I'll get in trouble, I have to make sure that doesn't happen.
King sits next to me again and I know because I can smell it. And with my eyes closed, for some reason he smells even more potent. I have to inhale as hard as I can because I like that scent. It's like something very sweet and nice, like a...
"Laurent, are you sleeping?" the teacher suddenly asks, pulling me out of my thoughts and forcing me to open my eyes.
"No, sorry," I answer in a low, embarrassed voice. Some of the kids laugh at me.
"Hey, I'm sleepy too," King whispers next to me, elbowing me and making me feel a little better.
The rest of the day, I can't stop breathing in. In fact, it's hard to pay attention to the teacher because I can't stop breathing in King's scent.
And every time I do, my wolf goes crazy in my head like he's excited.
