Helen could see the curious gaze in Finn's eyes as soon as she informed him she had an offer she wanted from him. She wasn't sure of what he thought she would say, but he seemed to be looking like a curious puppy now.
"What is it?" He asked, looking prepared and ready for whatever she had for him. He held her waist tighter and pulled himself more and more closer, but this time his waist touched hers. Her heart began racing fast. What was he thinking? Was he expecting her to ask for s*x? It wasn't s*x she had in mind. She just wanted to ask him a question about his ex. Now this was getting awkward.
"Tell me about your ex. You don't need to come too close", she said with a shaky voice, feeling herself getting a little aroused by his seductive movements.
"O. I am sorry". He apologized and let her go. He went back to bed and sat as he had done earlier but this time with his laptop on his lap. Helen stared at him, wondering how he could act so normally. This man almost seduced her by crying out loud. She had almost given in to him. What if she had? Then he would have slept with her and then pretend it never happened. He definitely was a hypocrite. "What do you want to know about my ex?"
"Your family keeps mentioning Joyce over and over again but you refuse to talk about her. I respected that and never questioned you anymore about her, but now that your cousin Zayn suspects we are faking this relationship. I think it's best we get to know each other better. Maybe become friends and not act formal in front of your family. I am sure it's because we did. That is why your cousin suspected us."
"How exactly did we act formally?" Finn asked, confused.
"We stood 1 meter apart from each other and acted like we didn't know each other. Our focus was somewhere else, Finn. We got offended if any of us bumped into the other or held each other. We were not even aware we were supposed to act like a couple. It was more like we were two strangers trying to fake what we had no clue about. We acted like complete idiots. Things would have been easier if we were friends. As friends, we will be more comfortable with each other and not act awkward"
Finn raised his eyebrows, knowing she was right about all the details. He twisted his nose and focused back on his laptop, trying not to show how amused he was at her great observance.
"So how will talking about Joyce help with this?" He wanted to know.
Helen sat before him with an enthusiastic expression.
"Okay! Look, it will help a great deal, I promise you that. Since Joyce was a great part of your life and you love her so much, maybe talking about her will make you more open towards me and perhaps form a soft spot for me in your heart", She explained, smiling.
"Excuse me? Soft spot...?" Finn asked with a stern stare.
"I mean, we will become more open with each other and flow more naturally rather than act awkward every single time we try to have a conversation. Come on, try to loosen up around me and share things with me. I promise, i am very good with secrets". She gave her word, winking at him, hoping he would finally speak up. Finn finally agrees, shutting his laptop close.
"Fine... As you said, Joyce was my girlfriend and I loved her so much." He began reluctantly. "We were together for 7 years. We were very good friends before I realized I had strong feelings for her. A really strong one I had never felt for another person before. In high school i was a flirt who loved to have one-night stands, but i never settled for any real relationships because i thought relationships were stupid and a completely overrated aspect of life everyone wanted to have an experience in. The moment I began developing a bond with Joyce, my view of love changed. She made me happy, she brought a kind of light into my life... no one had ever done. She helped me stop smoking. She helped me view life from a different angle and helped me through my depressed days when i had conflict with my dad. There was a time I ran away from home and she went out of her way trying to convince my dad to let her follow the police while they searched for me. When they finally saw me, the slap i had received from her infuriated me at first because a lady hadn't done that to me before. But realizing the pain i had made her go through and how much she cared about me a lot, I decided to accept the feelings i had for her and give her a chance. We were so happy together. Though we attended different universities, that never stopped us from sharing such a strong bond. Distance never separated our hearts from connecting with each other. She knew my space and i knew hers. I swear, i never even believed in true love until I experienced one with her, Helen. She changed my life so much. I was going to get married to her when it all went wrong."
"What happened to her?" Helen asked.
"We had an intense fight. She angrily decided to move to Japan in order to see her uncle, who was inviting her over. I hadn't spoken with her for a week, so I had no clue she was leaving until i saw the news on her status. I didn't take that seriously because I felt we needed a break and I could visit her in Japan anytime I wished. Little did i know, life doesn't work like that. She sent me a message before her flight telling me she wanted us to talk soon and would call me when she gets to Japan but.... unfortunately, she never arrived in Japan. You know why Helen? That's because her plane never arrived there! The plane got involved in a fatal crash leading to the death of all the passengers onboard, including her", he explained to her with a sober voice as tears rolled down his eyes. Helen felt so sorry for him. She patted his shoulder softly as if consoling him.
"I am sorry to hear that", she said to him, not sure of what else to say to console him.
"I hate telling this experience to anyone because it makes me feel soft and emotional. I hate anyone seeing me in this state. I hate being pitied", he confessed, immediately wiping his tears off.
"It's good to let out your pain sometimes. I know how hard it has been for you. Now I see why you never spoke about her or liked her compared with me. I feel like an i***t trying to force you to tell me about her."
"You really were an i***t. It's fine though it is done now. I guess I have answered your question per your request. Do we have a deal now? I hope you won't mind if I kiss you or act intimate with you in front of that jerk" He asked trying to sound nice, but he definitely wasn't nice at all.
"Uhhh...yes… but i have one more question", she added.
"You only had to ask one question. This is becoming more like cheating", he complained.
"Cheating?! I am not even convinced yet. I still have to understand this whole situation properly."
"Fine. What question do you wish to find an answer to?"
"Why did you both quarrel with each other? What argument could have been so intense that she never thought twice about moving to Japan? I feel if you both really love each other, moving would be a very hard decision, especially with the thought of not seeing each other again. I thought you wanted to marry her '' She asked, trying to quench her thirst of curiosity. Finn didn't look happy with that question.
"I won't be answering that. I have told you enough", he answered her coldly before getting up to leave for the washroom.
"This is not how you are, Finn. I know there is a good person deep down in there but you're trying to cover up your soft side and pretend to be cold with thick skin. I used to think you were proud and heartless, but after what i have experienced with you today, i have realized you are a very good person. You might insult me, ignore me, act rude. It doesn't change who you are. You are doing all this just to hide the pain you feel inside. The real is buried in there, not willing to come out.The real you value people's emotions and don't want to hurt anyone. That's why I think the fight between you both must have been a big part of this drastic change of yours. You might not tell me the reason for the fight now, but I assure you that i will find out in any way I can. I am very sure what i will find out won't be a fault of yours", she said to him as he was about to open the washroom door. He turned back to her, gave her a short stare before he proceeded to open up the door anyway.
"Stop being nice to me", he warned her, before walking in and shutting the door behind him.
Helen knew that wasn't something she was going to follow. She had realized the amount of pain Finn was going through at that point and why he did certain things the way he did. Perhaps it was time she dug deeper into the matter and found out what problem he must have had with his girlfriend in the past which led them to hurt each other so much. The truth could help her in the future. Who knows? She was already desperately looking for a way to ensure Finn didn't double cross in regarding their deal. Since no one trusted his intention, she wouldn't either. She had to find a way to grab hold of a weakness she could use to blackmail him. Grabbing hold of her phone, she realized it had been a long while since she called Emily and decided to drop by her place that evening.
"Hi girl. It's been a while", She confessed as soon as the lady picked up.
"Sure it has. You have been so busy with your hubby that you completely forgot about me. I am not surprised. That is how it always goes."
"Come on Emily. There have been so many problems here i have been trying to fix. You won't believe how tired i am going for all his family functions and pretending to like everybody. They keep having parties after parties every weekend. Aside from that, though, our friendship means a lot to me and I will never let that come between us. We have been through a lot, you know."
"Sure lady. That's why i am advising you not to forget your friendships because of your relationship. Hold on, i know this is supposed to be fake stuff, but could you try to give Finn a chance? I know you haven't known him for a long time and things are pretty rough between you both, but trying to look at the positive side of things rather than the negative could actually get you attracted to him. Your stupidity got you to lose Tristan. Be very smart with this one. Who knows, the table might turn around in his case. Both of you might be compatible."
"Finn is a pretty good guy, I won't lie, but there is just so much to uncover about him…He isn't my type of guy" She stops speaking as soon as she catches sight of Finn staring at her briefly from the washroom door. "I will be visiting you this evening. I haven't seen you in a while". She changed the topic immediately.
"You don't need to, Helen. Tristan is having a hard time processing his mum's death. I will have to go see him. You won't be meeting me in the salon this evening."
"His mother died? When? He didn't tell me anything", Helen said, with shock.
"She died two days ago. I don't know why he didn't tell you, but i have to go now. I will see you soon" The call ended. Helen dropped the phone on the bed, carefully wondering why Tristan was not sharing things with her anymore.
