They saw passengers going down in herds below deck, but Lencia had decided that she would rather sit outside for as long as it was possible. Alice thought the same and so they found two comfortable chairs from which, as the ship sailed, they could see the White Cliffs of Dover in all their glory. “We have done it! We have really done it!” Alice cried. “And I thought last night that something was bound to stop us at the very last moment.” “Well, your wish has come true,” Lencia said, “and we cannot possibly ask for more.” “I am going to ask for a great deal more,” Alice declared. “I want to see every Castle in the Loire Valley before we go home.” “That might take you years,” Lencia protested, “and just think of the commotion if Papa comes home and finds us not there.” Alice laughed.
