Chapter 9 Walking through Chalahgawtha, Robert was again reminded of the village of his mother. He remembered too, how the tribe had shunned her because of her affair with the white Englishman. When her situation became intolerable, she had chosen her people over her son and sent him to be adopted by the Slocums. Robert had never wished to return to his roots, never imagined that he ever would return. Now, by a twist of fate, he was not only plunged back into his ancestral culture, but he was beginning to feel it was good that he had been. Much of this, he knew, was due to the man who walked beside him. Tall, strong, handsome, in control, Red Horse embodied all Robert had imagined an Indian Brave to be.
