Ch. 21 Elizabeth
I woke up in my bed and I could smell Tristan’s scent faintly, but when I opened my eyes I was all alone.
My head was still pounding just like before, but I knew I had to get up. If my calculations were correct my men would be arriving, and we would be leaving in the next day or so. I changed and made my self ready although I didn’t really plan on leaving my room after last night news.
Actually, I couldn’t remember much of anything after Justin helped me up, I’d have to find him and ask him what happened. I was all set to find him when my door flew open.
“YOU’RE LEAVING?!” Sarah asked demanding answers. How had she figured it out, and why on Earth was she shouting it.
“Keep your voice down!” I said shutting the door behind her.
“Why?! Tristan knows already he’s the one who told me!” Accusation all over her voice.
“What?!...Sarah I’m so sorry but I couldn’t risk your brother finding out, he would have tried to stop me.” I said taking her hands and trying to get her to understand but I could see she was very hurt.
“You were going to leave just like last time with out a word to us!” Sarah threw at me.
“I’m sorry about that too, but you don’t know what happened that night.”
“Enlighten me then.” She said crossing her arms on her chest.
“You remember Charles your father’s old assistant?”
“That crazy old couk was retired years ago.” She said not understanding where I was going with this.
“Yes, but before that he some crazy idea that he would be running this place for Tristan. He practically forced me to leave and with the issues that I was having back home I had no choice but to listen to what he was saying. I have a pretty good idea as to why my letters never got to any of you.” I said as the thought struck me while I explained.
“Fine. But that is no excuse for how you are trying to leave this time. Don’t you think that we deserved a goodbye?” She asked me with her soft eyes that made it impossible to not feel guilty.
“Your brother couldn’t know.” I said having no other excuse for myself. “I suppose it doesn’t matter though since he found out anyway. How did he find out?” I asked her curious.
“He didn’t, mother did, and she informed him. I don’t think he’ll be trying to stop you anymore though, not with Vivian around. Sine yesterday’s news she has been acting as though she owns the place. Tristan has been locked in his room, he told me when I went to check up on him. You should say goodbye Elizabeth it’s the least you can do.” She said dropping her arms in defeat.
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.” I said shaking my head.
“I don’t know what’s going with you and brother, but I do know that he is not ok. His mate just announced they’re having a child and he has all but sent her away. I’ve never heard of someone having two mates, or a wolf mating with a human, but that is the closest I can get to describing what is happening here. Now ask yourself do you really think that it is right to just leave him without another word?” She said leaving her words hanging in the air heavily. “Why don’t you stay and think about it before you take off?” she pressed on when she saw that I had no argument for her.
“I can’t.” I said making up my mind. “You’re right humans and wolves don’t mate and I can’t be the reason he is not with his mate and child…but I will go see him before I leave. Is he still in his bedroom?”
“No, I’m not sure where he is now. He said he was going to take a run after I left him.” She informed me.
“Ok I’ll look for him later then.” I said. She smiled and squeezed my hand before leaving me alone.
She was right I couldn’t just leave him without an explanation like last time. Before I knew it I was making my way to the clearing in the forest. I could feel him there before I saw him. I saw as he stiffened when he caught wind of me.
“Elizabeth don’t.” He said before I had a chance to say anything. He stood up and walked towards the water.
“Tristan…I-”
“Save it. I already know you’re leaving, and I don’t plan on stopping you. So just go.” I could hear the pain in his voice, and it made my chest ache.
“I’m sorry for hurting you.” It was all I say without breaking down there in front of him and turned away to leave. Each step felt like agony, it felt wrong to turn my back away from him and just leave him there. I didn’t notice I was sobbing until I was back in my room. I forced myself to pack up the rest of my bags.
I would be leaving in the morning.
The next morning came all too soon, I made my way to the area where our car would be and found that Justin and Thomas were there waiting for me.
“You weren’t going to leave without saying goodbye were you?” Thomas teased.
“Of course not.” I replied with a smile. I took turns and hugged them each.
“You take care of each other ok.” I told them.
“Are you sure you want to leave here?” Thomas asked concerned.
“Yes, I need to gather more help to take back my kingdom. We have a good reason to invade now that they have attacked you here. I just need to make sure the remaining alphas are on board and I can’t do that staying here.” I was well aware they knew this was a lie, but they didn’t argue with it.
“As soon as we get the last of the support we will move forward.” Thomas said with determination.
“Lizzybee you know you will always have a place here and our support.” Justin said giving me a hug. I hugged Thomas as well and Kenna then made her way to us.
“Make sure you keep these two in line.”
“I will.” She answered with tears in her eyes and gave me a tight hug. I had already said my goodbyes to Sarah and Queen Mary so I made my way in the car. This time I was alone as the girls had each gone in a sperate car to be a diversion in case their was anyone looking for me.
The driver made his out of the castle leaving my friends behind once again. We had made it off the grounds when the car stopped making me look up.
Tristan.
He was standing in our way. “Wait here.” I told my driver.
I made my way out of the car and Tristan walked into the forest and I followed him. Once we were out of view he turned to face me.
“I…I couldn’t let you go without saying goodbye.” He said his voice strained
“Tristan- ”
“No listen, I need you to know that I love you, I never stopped loving you, and I never will. But I can’t turn my back on my mate and child. You will always have my support…from afar.” He words were laced in pain and they fell heavy on my chest making it hard to breathe. He stepped closer to me moving slowly until his face was a breath from mine.
“Tristan, I love you too.” I told him placing my had on his face. Trying to ease his pain in any way that I could. At my touch he inhaled sharply before pulling me in for a kiss. The bitter sweet kiss of goodbye, but oh it was all too sweet. His lips soft against mine made it hard to concentrate on anything else, my tears slipped as I knew it would be over after this.
He broke this kiss all too soon but held me in his arm. Took it all in his scent, his warmth, the way his body perfectly fit mine. I closed my eyes allowing myself to be in that moment, and just like that he was gone. A loud howl came from deep in the forest and once again I was all alone.
