The food trays were slumped loudly and harshly on the metal lunch tables, placed in one of the multiple rows of the lunchroom of the Woodrow Wilson High School.
Polly plunged down on the metal chair as she harshly pulled it back and her three other friends also copied her moves.
Polly wore her practicing outfit, which was mostly red but sparkled with blue glitter all over, while her other friends only wore light blue cheerleading outfits and it was obvious that Polly was the leader of the squad of four that she led.
But her sour expressions made it obvious that she wasn’t still happy to be the leader of just her friends’ group. She wanted to be something else or more like someone else.
She squinted her eyes sharply at the tall petite blond that strutted along with her handsome even more blonder, perfect version of Ken of a boyfriend, who was also the quarterback of the school’s football team and Polly’s ultimate crush and of course, he had to be dating her rival and the captain of the cheerleading squad, ‘Tamy’, who was also Polly biggest nemesis and bully.
Well – she never bullied Polly to the extant to pushing her down and throwing milk cartons at her. No – since it was more modern times, bullying techniques had also developed.
Tamy – through her parent’s connections was able to get the position of the captain of the cheerleading squad and not just that, she had an easier influence on getting her hands on Brad, who was her boyfriend and a family friend and also Polly’s crush. One could tell that the way Tamy treated Brad, who was crazy about her and the way she took her position as the cheer captain non seriously, all pointed towards the obvious or at least to Polly – that she was doing all of this only to irritate her.
Polly held her fork tightly in her fist and wished to stab Tamy with it.
“Gosh! She looks so stupid with that bedazzling jacket on.” Complained one of Polly’s friend, understanding her frustration with the girl.
“She did the whole changing the routine act today on purpose, only to piss you off.” Stated one one of Polly’s friend.
“I know!” Polly planted her fist viciously on the table, making the whole table rattle.
At the same time, one of the administrative clerks, entered the lunch room and spotted Polly sitting around and mumbling and complaining to her friends.
“I don’t even know what he sees in her. she is just so stupid and full of herself.”
Polly continued chewing on her food as the old administrative clerk in his khaki pants and checkered shirt approached her and cleared his throat, calling for the girls’ attention but when his entire presence went unnoticed he finally clapped his hands and called out Polly’s name.
“Paulina Sanchez?”
Polly snapped his neck upwards, as only the officials around the school, called her by her full name.
She looked up and saw the clerk standing quite closer to their table and it only made her jerk back, as she felt creeped out by his presence.
“Yes?” she asked with confusion and he gently and only slightly leaned forward.
“You have been called to the principal office?”
Polly gasped in confusion and the entire lunch room went in to a state of total silence, as someone from the principle’s office had showed up and wanted Polly to come with them to the big office, where only kids who were in trouble would go.
“Umm… why?” Polly asked and the clerk only shook his head back at her.
“This, I can not disclose to you in public and you are required to come with me and see it for yourself, why you have been summoned.”
“Gosh! Did you do something?” asked one of the Polly’s friend and Polly simply shook her head back at them.
“No! not something I could think of.”
Polly stated and simply got up from her seat and began walking towards the principal’s office along with the clerk.
Everyone around the lunchroom began cooing and whispering, wondering what Diana may have done that may have led her to be called in such a specific manner that also during lunch hours by the principal.
“Did Tamy get her in trouble?” said another one of Polly’s friend and as Polly walked out of the lunch room, she saw the way Tamy looked at her. even she was surprised but along with shock, there was an evident hint of joy on her face that Polly hated and wanted to wipe right off her face.
But even in her state of curiosity, Diana walked with the clerk and reached for the principal’s office, where the clerk went ahead to sit on his desk right outside the principal’s cabin and left Polly all on her own to go inside.
She knocked on the door twice, before hearing an approval and finally she opened up the door and walked inside, to find her bald and chubby principal, sitting on his wide swivel chair, with his coat hanging behind him and his black suspenders laced on top of his coffee colored shirt.
“Oh Paulina Sanchez. Come on in.”
The principal’s thin lips widened with a bright smile as he looked at Polly and welcomed him inside the office and just as she walked in, the first thing her eyes landed on was another tall figure that sat in front of the principal with his back facing Polly.
“Umm… if you are busy, I can wait outside.” She offered politely and the Principal only chimed back at her politely.
“Gosh! Such great manners. I should’ve known you were always the pride of Willson High.”
“Huh?” Polly asked, completely flabbergasted by the principal’s over the top praises that he built her way.
“Yes! I should’ve known you weren’t just someone so common and usual and of course you also shouldn’t have hidden about your connections. It just benefitted us now and they could’ve benefitted us more as well.”
Polly c****d at the principal, as she remained frozen to the ground and only felt even more bewildered by every word the bald man spoke.
He is a highly unscrupulous man, who gives perks to only those that he benefits from. There is no way, he is talking about me and is definitely confused about someone else. Tamy got the position of the cheer squad only because her mother is on the city community board and it profited with many admissions to the school.
So, there was no way would think of Polly as someone special because she was someone with zero links and connections.
“Principal Donald! I am pretty sure that you are talking about someone else. By any chance you didn’t confuse me with any other Paulina around the school, right?” she offered and at the same time the guest that Principal Donald was entertaining, turned around and Polly’s eyes popped out of her sockets as she found Adrian sitting in front of her principal.
She gulped hard and began shaking with anxiety, wondering what he was doing at her school.
“What are you…?” she began questioning and at the same time the principal sighed in relief.
“Oh! So, you do know him. and you are the right Paulina Sanchez.”
“Yeah but what are you doing here?” Polly inquired from Adrian who stood up and walked to stand in front of Polly, towering tall above her.
Is her cousin the only tall person in the entire family?
Adrian wondered as he looked at just how short Polly was.
“I was just passing by and I come by to check up on the school that would become one of the charitable organizations that would profit from our company from now on. I came by and I saw your pictures on the school board. So, I just came to meet the principal and asked him about you.”
He told her and Polly stood confused.
“This school?” she asked, realizing that the public school in which she studies was a wreck of a place and may not suit and befit the profile and image of his company. But then again she was young and didn’t know much about business and what goes around.
“Principal Donald, Polly here is my cousin.” Adrian turned around and told the principal, who cooed in sheer surprise.
“Wow! That is amazing. Polly you never told me that you had a cousin from the Sarmiento family.”
“I guess, I also just found out today…” Polly mumbled lowly in her mouth and the principal only felt confused as he couldn’t hear her words clearly.
“Huh? Sorry I didn’t catch that.”
“I mean, I am glad that Adrian came here.” she lied through her teeth and Adrian stepped towards the principal.
“I saw that my cousin is the vice captain of the cheerleading squad. Now, I just know that it would help her in her college applications but don’t you think if she was the the captain of the cheerleading squad it would be better for her? I mean she is in her sophomore year and soon she would be needing to filing college applications within a few months from now on. Don’t you think, she would feel more relaxed to fill in as ‘Captain’ rather than saying ‘Vice Captain’?” he asked the principal who immediately nodded at Adrian.
“You don’t have to worry about a thing. I will issue a personal letter to the couch and immediately ask him to make Paulina the cheerleading captain.”
Paulina’s eyes opened wide with shock but at the same time she felt skyrocketed to the moon, as the one thing she wanted the most in the whole world. She had been eyeing to be the captain for the past entire year but Tamy remained glue to her rank. And just one command from Adrian and Polly got that without much hesitation from the principal.
Polly immediately realized the power and influence that Adrian had and she knew that not even thousands of years and even after being born three times, Polly would have been able to transition to as the cheerleading squad captain as smoothly as Adrian was able to get that position for her.
“That would mean a lot to me.” Adrian smiled gently at the principal.
“Is there anything else that I can do for you?” he asked and Adrian shook his head back and turned to leave but paused, as a thought struck him.
“Actually, there is something that I think you can do for me.”
“Really? I would be more than glad to help you with that.” the principal offered and Adrian stretched his lips with warmth.
“Great! Can I take Polly with me for an hour? I will try my best to get her back before time and…”
“You don’t have to. I will write her a leave. She can take the rest of the day off if she wants to. You don’t have to bring her back.” The principal took out his pad and began writing Polly a leave but Adrian only refrained him from doing so.
“No! I just don’t want to make her miss on her studies. I will try my best to bring her back before an hour. If that would be fine.”
“Yes, of course. Paulina, you should go with your cousin.”
The principal ordered, Polly who was snapped out of her thoughts and she immediately nodded and bowed to the principal in respect, as she followed Adrian out of the office and down the hallway, where Adrian strutted with confidence, walking out with his guards joining him on either side.
“Whoa! That was so cool how you just asked him make me the cheer captain and he did it right then and there. I don’t think I would have been able to achieve that spot even if I had to be reborn like three to four times. You are simply amazing. How did you even do that?”
She cheered on to Adrian, as they walked out of the school building and Adrian’s car pulled over right in front of them.
A guard stepped ahead and opened up the door of the car and Adrian gestured at Polly to get inside.
She looked at him in sheer bewilderment and gestured at herself, wondering if he was asking for her to get inside.
“I didn’t ask the principal to excuse you for an hour only because I wanted you to show me around campus. Come on! We have places to go.”
He told her, as Polly jumped inside the car without a second thought and Adrian only shook his head, not surprised but only amazed at how easy it was for him to please Polly and it only assured him that his journey ahead in which he was going to make good use of Polly was going to give him great results.
