23. Spotting Weakness

1322 Words
“I meant…” she only scoffed with sarcasm, “I meant, why would you pay for the hospital and show up back in my life after ten years when I am happy on my own. Why are you doing this? Why are you forcing yourself on me? Why are you doing everything that I did that you hated and made it clear to me that you don’t even want to see my face!” Diana’s voice rose an octave high by the end of her complaints and everyone around the reception, did turn their heads towards Diana and Jared also felt conscious, noticing how tired and irritated Diana sounded by that point. He looked at his boss, who took only a step ahead and he fisted his hands in regret and cringe, knowing that Diana may have earned a punch or a knuckle from her boss. But Adrian simply stepped forward and placed his hand over Diana’s shoulder, patting her very gently, taking Jared by surprise, who at the same time gently released his fingers free from his fist that he had formed in order to face the anxiety that he was feeling inside his body. He kept his fist closer to his mouth, that also helped him mask and hide his expressions, every now and then. “I know you must be very tired by now. Hospital paper work is very exhausting. It must have been very tiring for you to do all of that on your own.” Diana shrugged Adrian’s hands off her shoulder with quite the rude and rigorous move, making Adrian fist his hand up, as kept it firm in the air but he immediately pulled his hand down and unclenched his jaw, that Jared noticed and could tell that his boss’s patience had started to wear off once again but he immediately placed his hand behind Adrian’s back and assured him that he needed to stay head strong and face the situation with no matter how much difficulty may come ahead of him. “Take your p*****t for the private room back.” Diana told Adrian, who held an amused look on his face. “It doesn’t work that way.” He told Diana, who grunted with even more agony. “Fine! then it doesn’t meant that just so you chose to do all of this, I owe you anything at all.” She then tried to deal with things in a much more practical manner and Adrian was actually amused, realizing that Diana was actually quite bad at negotiating and playing mind games. Boy is negotiation, really not her forte or what? He wondered as he assessed her statement. She gave off her guilt right away. She felt bad that he spent money on her Aunt, even though he didn’t paint it that he did it for her. but she was smart and knew why Adrian was doing everything but she wasn’t clever enough to hide the thing that Adrian’s acts were making her feel guilty. Well! there it was! Adrian finally had her weak point in his hands and it was about time he used it against her. “I didn’t say that you owe me anything at all. I told you, I did everything only because I feel responsible for your Aunt’ condition. That’s why I came here and once, I meet her and apologize to her for the inconvenience I have caused, I would be out. And if you say that you don’t ever want to see my face again, I would never show you my face again.” Jared gasped silently, as he heard his boss’s words, which to him sounded more like a farewell speech of Jared saying goodbye to his position of ever becoming the head secretary. “Umm boss…?” he tried to snap Adrian back in to the reality and make him realize that his words could cost him but instead Adrian only ignored him entirely and Diana shrugged and rolled her eyes in disappointment, shaking her head that Adrian was still being adamant and polite towards her. But nonetheless, the moment she heard him promise that he would leave her once she would ask him to never show his face to her again, she decided to let him have his final wish with her, which was to meet Emily and apologize to her. Diana turned to walk towards the elevator and Adrian smirked, knowing that she had given in and it meant that he should join her to go upstairs and meet her aunt in the private room. As Adrian was about to leave Jared held his boss back and pulled him to a corner. Once Diana felt that she was alone and Adrian was not coming with her, she turned to look back at Adrian and saw that his assistant had cornered him back. “You go ahead! I will join you in a minute.” He told her with a sweet smile and Diana nodded and continued to walk towards the elevator. “What are you doing?” Jared whispered yelled at his boss, as he pulled him aside in to a corner. “Listen, I think I finally have Diana’s weakness in my hands.” He informed Jared, who looked back at his boss in confusion. “What weakness?” “I don’t have time right now to explain everything to you. Just trust me at the moment and I promise you when I come back downstairs, you wouldn’t have to worry about a thing and half of our problems would be solved.” With that Adrain left Jared, in shambles behind him and sprinted to join Diana, who stood by the elevators, still waiting for any on of the three elevators to open up. “Your assistant is not coming?” she asked Adrian, who shook his head back at Diana. “He doesn’t go everywhere with me. Only when I am dealing in some important business, he joins me. He has to handle some things around the hospital.” At the very same time, the door to the elevators opened up and Adrian gestured like a gentleman and asked Diana to get inside first, who also didn’t argue much, considering that it was be the last time that she was seeing him. She simply got inside the elevator and Adrian followed her right away and pressed to the thirteenth floor of the elevator. What is it with him? why is he acting so nice and polite and not being persistent? At the café, he was acting as if he didn’t get me, he would lose his mind and now he is so calm and even saying that if I didn’t want him to stay, he would leave. Did some sort of revelation jolted him up and made him act right? Diana wondered, as she stood at a distance from Adrian and looked at him through her peripheral vision, trying her best to assess his looks and his state of mind. Adrian immediately snapped his neck towards Diana, catching her in the middle of gawking him. she immediately turned her face away, feeling ashamed of being caught in the spur of the moment. Adrian also turned his face to look ahead of him and smirked to his own self, that he still held control of Diana and her emotions and it only give him more courage and hope to hold out for a positive change to come his way. Soon the elevator stopped at the seventh floor and just as the door of the lift opened up, Diana and Adrian’s eyes bulged out as huge number of staff members standing by the entrance and without a single warning they all rushed inside the elevator, not wanting to miss the ride. --------------------------------------- Hope you guys are enjoying the book so far :) Thank you for always reading and supporting my work <3
