8. I promised him...

1101 Words
Diana sat in complete bewilderment, frozen to her seat, as Adrian stated those words nonchalantly. “I want you!” He reinstated. “Huh?” Those words slipped out of her mouth, as she sat back in utter shock and Adrian slightly slid towards her, making her pull herself back a little. “I mean, I came here to take you back.” He spoke softly, bringing in slightly clarity to his words but Diana only shook her head back at him. “Why?” she asked, unable to comprehend his words entirely. Adrian took a deep breath and kept his expressions soft and gullible as he looked at Diana and explained his lie, that he tried to transmit out with sweet and sleuth words, making it sound as an honest intention. “Because when I was announced to be the next CEO, I didn’t how exactly I felt.” Diana remained tacit as she heard Adrian speak and explain himself further on. “… I mean, of course I was happy and anyone would be happy to achieve something that they have worked hard towards their entire life but then suddenly it hit me that I don’t have anybody to celebrate this success with.” “What about Joy?” Diana inquired and Adrian nodded. “Of course she was there with me all along.” “And Uncle Diablo?” “Yeah him also…” Adrian added. “And your friends from college and business partners and…” “Okay! Cut it.” Adrian held his hands out, realizing that his technique to act as a loner was not going to work in Diana, he would have to come up with something much more mature and twisting. “What I meant to say was that I had a lot of people to celebrate the news with but it didn’t feel relevant with them.” “How could you not feel relevant getting richer with rich people? That’s like the only thing you guys love to celebrate.” Diana’s comment took Adrian by quite the surprise. “Ever since when has a makeup artist started getting political?” Diana remained indifferent as she replied, “Why can’t a makeup artist be politics? Is politics just for the upper class?” “No! it is not…” Adrian straightened up and looked right ahead of him, now this time being the one who was left stunned at the discovery of Diana gaining knowledge and standing her ground with her active and fast replies. “Well, when I was announced as the next CEO, I actually thought of your father…” As Adrian stated that, Diana’s heart dropped low in her stomach, as the memories of all the wounds and hurt that she had received at the hands of her father, who ignored his family and his own daughter only for the sake of his job, which was to train Adrian, who received more affection from her father than she did, brought tears to her eyes. But she immediately blinked those tears away, determined to not to shred a single tear down her cheek. She cleared her throat and straightened her back. “Of course, as I said earlier, my Dad trained you well. So, there was no doubt in you achieving that mark that you did.” “And then… I realized something.” Completing ignoring Diana’s words, Adrian continued to speak and finally turned to look at her and found her already looking at him with a slight haze of confusion covering her face. “I felt that even thought I have achieved everything as a businessman, I guess I have failed as a disciple.” “Failed? How?” One side of Diana’s rose went up, as she felt completely lost. “Failed because I couldn’t return the favor back of the man because of whom I became successful.” “Well yeah… it is sad…” Diana spoke with a tough knot tied in her heart, that pained her to even think about the tragic passing of her father and his late wife, who was also her step mother and her tormentor. She always felt very strangely coagulated through emotions, each time she had to deal with the unnerving pain of the remembrance of her father and his wife’s passing. They were the only guardian figures in her life, that gave her protection and shelter and even though they were never there for her in any terms. Her father remained busy with Adrian, training him till late hours and her step mother, Venessa did nothing but only physically and verbally a***e her, all the while pushing her down as a maid and forcing her to do house chores. With their passing, Diana never shed a tear. She somehow, pushed all those feelings that emerged in her heart somewhere deep at the back of her mind. People talked a lot about how she was a confused little kid, who didn’t even know what to do with the passing of her parents, as she stood silently watching her two legal guardians resting dead in their coffins, inside the church. She was young, tormented, exhausted, broken and naïve, when people tried to sympathize with her, taking her as a shabby kid but little did they know that she knew and had experienced way too much to be feeling bad for herself at that point in time in life. Maybe she felt scared… scared that there wasn’t going to be anyone in her life to protect her anymore. But other than that… she kept on asking herself, was it really a tragedy for her as everyone kept speaking or was it really more of a relief for her, that God sent to her as a gift, from the torment that only she knew about. “So…” Adrian spoke up, startling Diana out of her thoughts and bringing her back to the present. She looked at Adrian with her face flushed and warm from remembrance of the past and Adrian only smiled back at her, trying his best to sound as a messenger of care, that bore nothing but good intentions. “As I was saying that I can not pay your father back because he is no more with us but I have decided to pay him back by fulfilling my promise to him.” “What promise?” inquired Diana and Adriam replied, simply taking Diana completely by surprise. “I promised him to take care of you.” -------------------------- Thank you for always reading and supporting my work <3
