Chapter One
**Maia**
The problem with being an unmated, rouge werewolf was that you faced uncertainty every day. From waking up in the morning to laying your head down to rest at night. You always had to be aware of your surroundings because being in my predicament was dangerous. I had no pack of my own which was now why I was considered a rogue wolf. My pack’s village was attacked two years ago when I was but seventeen years old. Everyone who I ever knew or loved died a horrible death. The only reason I was alive was that I had always visited the meadow behind our village to pick flowers for my mother every morning. That was the day my wolf made herself known. Now it was just me and her out in the wilderness fighting every day to survive.
This morning felt different to me for some unknown reason. Kali, my wolf could sense it too.
‘Maia something doesn’t feel quite right. Check your surroundings carefully and quietly.’
‘Okay but if you sense another wolf, transform and rip them apart. No need to ask questions. We are rogues and they will not hesitate to kill us if given the chance.’
I stood as quietly as I could. The leaves crunched beneath my feet with every step that I took. Every time I heard the leaves crunch or a small branch break under me, I tightly closed my eyes hoping that whoever was near didn’t hear me.
It was early morning as the sun was just beginning to break through the clouds. It was still Fall outside but not for much longer. The cold air blew harshly against my face causing me to squint my eyebrows in response. If it weren’t for the fact that I was a wolf, I’m sure I would have frozen to death by now. Lasting two years out in the wilderness was no easy task and only seemed to grow harder every day I was out here by myself. All this time alone did have its benefits though. It has given me the strength to stay alive on my own, not having to depend on another person for anything. I liked that most even though it was lonely.
A black mass whipped past me at such a quick speed that I almost missed it. Another benefit of being out on my own was that my senses have become highly alert to my surroundings. Any other wolf would have most likely missed it but not me. Whoever this was, was stepping on dangerous ground. No one could outsmart me in my territory.
“Come out whoever you are. If you think you can fool me, you will be disappointed.”
A large black wolf emerged from the tree that was facing in my direction. He let out a long deep growl as he inched closer to me.
‘Kali, you ready?’
‘Say the word.’
Once he was about halfway in my direction, he stopped unexpectantly which caught me off guard.
‘Why is he stopping? What is this wolf up to?’
‘Maia.’
‘This is strange.’
‘Maia.’
‘He clearly knows I’m a rogue wolf. So why is he not attacking?’
‘MAIA!’
‘What Kali?’
‘We are severely outnumbered here.’
As I took a look around me I noticed she was right. There had to have been twenty or more wolves surrounding me now. I was so focused on the one in front of me that I didn’t focus on the other senses that were going haywire.
“Get on with it then!” I screamed at them all spinning around me throwing my hands in the air being dramatic.
“No need for a fight here little one.”
A man appeared from behind the black wolf and made his way over to me.
“Do not come any closer. I might not be able to take you all but I damn sure will take as many of you with me as I can.”
“Feisty little one. That is going to do you some good where you're headed.”
What the hell was this guy talking about?
“I’m not going anywhere with you!”
He gave me a wicked grin and proceed to step forward until he was right in my face. “Oh but you are little wolf.” His fingers trailed along my cheek that made me instantly sick to my stomach. “Such a waste for a beautiful thing like you to be out here all alone.”
“If you put your nasty f*****g hands on me again, I’ll break every bone in your body causing you a long painful healing process.”
He grabbed a fistful of my hair and jerked it harshly sending me crashing to the ground. “I don’t do well with threats.” He then picked me back up locking me in place to look nowhere but straight at him. “You will need to learn to control your tongue. Men do not enjoy a woman with such a foul mouth such as yours.”
Once he released me, I gave Kali the signal to transform. Enough of this bullshit! I was going to rip this guy apart. All the wolves around me were clearly men. When I was fully shifted they all howled a piercing territorial howl. Even living on my own, I still remember the different howls and what they meant. I was still raised to know common wolf knowledge.
The man that stood in front of me never flinched. He even looked surprised by my wolf. Okay seriously, what were they all staring at?
“My what a beautiful sight. You're beautiful in human form but more stunning as your wolf. In all my time on this Earth, I have never come across a female wolf as captivating as yours. Do you know how rare it is to have a wolf such as yours? A red wolf, Canis rufus. Amazing. Men, I think we have found a winner here. Take her.”
They all started closing in on me at once. Now it was Kali’s turn to shine. A brown wolf came running up to us and in just one move Kali had his throat ripped out by her teeth. The next wolf that followed in the brown wolves steps was an off white color. Stupid wolf. Did you not learn anything from your friend there? If this was how it was going to be, one on one, we were easily going to win this fight. The wolf launched in the air trying to catch us by surprise but as the wolf landed on top of us, Kali kicked him mid-air sending him flying harshly into a nearby tree.
‘Nice one Kali.’
The man that still stood in human form put his hand up to stop the other wolves. “Did I not say take her? If you continue to face her alone you all will die. Take her down together quickly.”
Kali snapped her teeth at them sending them a warning. Then all at one time they lunged as us pulling us to the cold ground. I had to close my eyes to drown out the pain that coursed through my body. These wolves were not gentle at all as they started sinking their teeth into us. My body could not keep up with the pain and soon I was blacking out from it.
**
My eyes slowly drifted open. What? How am I not dead? I quickly sat up remembering the events from earlier. It was complete darkness all around me. I tried to relax my beating my heart so I could focus on my hearing. Nothing. I could hear nothing but silence.
I could hear footsteps approaching nearby. Then a door opened and all I could see was the bright light blinding me. My arm moved over my eyes to block the light out as best I could.
“Hello, little wolf. Now that I have you secured I can formally introduce myself. My name is Callum, owner of this here establishment you are now in. Before you freak out on me…”
“Do I look like I’m freaking out to you?”
He flashed me a grin followed by a wink. “No, not at all. I have to say you are the first of many female rouges here tonight that seems to not be frightened by her predicament.”
“And what predicament is that?”
“I am a wealthy businessman who earns his money by selling beautiful female wolves like yourself to male wolves looking for companionship. There are many alphas, betas, warriors, even family members that come here for a chance to find themselves a rare wolf to keep them company. Some will use you for s*x, some to do their bidding, others will simply use you as a maid. What they do with you when you leave here is none of my business. My job is to sell you to the highest bidder.”
This was a joke, right? I’ve never heard of something like this before. Maybe because I have been on my own for so long. Damn how things have changed in such a short amount of time.
“Good luck with that. I’ll see to it no one wants me. Then you will have no other choice but to deal with me yourself and I will take pleasure in ripping your throat out while you beg for mercy.”
Callum chuckled at my remark. “That kind of feistiness is exactly why every man here tonight is going to love you. I have a feeling that you are going to make me an incredibly happy man tonight.”
I instantly spat in his face.
He pulled out a napkin from the tuxedo he was wearing to wipe the spit from his face. “Someone will be in shortly to provide you some clothes to wear. The bidding starts in half an hour. Good luck little wolf. With these hungry men out there tonight, you are going to need it.”
I was left alone back into the darkness. I didn’t even know I was naked. It wasn’t like I cared. Being naked was not something I was ashamed of. After all, it was apart of my nature.
Sitting in this darkness struck me with the realization of everything happening to me. I was a rogue. Who sold rogues? We couldn’t be trusted and everyone knew that. Even if I was auctioned off tonight, who would be so stupid as to think they can control me?
A side door opened and I was being thrown some clothing before the person on the other side closed it quickly. When Callum returned, he expected me to be dressed.
“You my dear will be the grand finale. Are you sure you don’t want to be dressed for this? There are well over three hundred men out there tonight. If you show up naked then you are only ensuring that you get sold. Do what you please but we start in five minutes.” Then he walked back out the door.
At least this time he provided me with enough light to see enough to dress myself. I took into consideration his words carefully. He was right. If I were naked it would only ensure I was sold tonight. I slipped on the short black dress that clung tightly to my breast. I was sure if I were to bend over I would show my ass and all.
By the time I was finished getting dressed, the lights in my room had been turned on along with a small camera in the upper right corner of the room blinking red at me. I paced around the room for what seemed like hours. Every time a wolf was put on the floor I could hear the eruption of the men through the thin walls. When a wolf was sold I could hear her cries and whimpers that sent me into panic mode. I never panicked it wasn’t like me. I always kept my cool because I knew if I found myself in a situation there was always a way out of it if I thought clearly enough to know what that was.
The room I was in moved suddenly making my fall to the ground.
“Gentlemen it is time for the last rogue of the night. You are in for a real treat tonight fellas. I have found you a rare Canis rufus wolf. I was lucky enough to see it for myself upon her capture earlier today.”
Music started playing in the background as my room was uncovered and I was left sitting on the ground focusing my eyes on the floor. I would not look up.
‘Maia I’m right here with you.’
‘Kali where have you been?’
‘Healing our wounds. It took a lot out of me. I have been listening in so I’m all caught up on what is going on. This room looks made of glass, maybe we can breakthrough.’
‘I don’t think they would be so stupid to put us in a glass room. They already have sensed how strong we are.’
‘Should we transform and try to break it down?’
I had to think rationally here. Did we stand a chance of breaking down this barrier with a room full of powerful males waiting to put us on our ass? I mean three hundred men would be impossible for us to get through.
‘Yes, but we are not going to escape just yet. Kali trust me okay?’
‘What are you doing Maia?’
‘I am going to make sure we get sold then once we do, we can make our escape then.’
My legs stiffened as I stood and the men went crazy. Assuming it was because of the dress that left little to the imagination. I shook my head to signal Kali that it was time. We transformed in under a minute. After transforming as many times as I have, it has become effortless. I lifted my head to finally get the first glimpse at the disgusting men ready to place their bids. As my head moved up until it was level with them, the room grew silent other than a few gasp here and there.
