Chapter 11Come morning, Levi found a brief reprieve in his fears when Pap asked Mom to come out to the farm with Annie that day and see to some mending Granddad needed done but was too proud to ask for help with. Annie immediately pulled a face. “Can’t I go with Levi to the store instead?” she complained. “No,” Pap said. And that was that. Annie clearly wanted to argue, and Mom looked less than thrilled with the prospect of dealing with her whining, but Levi was glad he was spared another day of worry, even if he knew it stemmed from Pap’s mistrust of his behavior.
