Chapter 10The moon hid behind a mask of clouds, so much to Levi’s advantage he didn’t trust it. In spite of how he wanted to cling to his ideals, he’d learned through Otto’s threats that the carnival thrived on what wasn’t seen, sleight of hand, promises galore. Now, even the skies were taking sides. He should have paid attention to Pap’s warnings. Seb’s, too. Only a few lights dotted the carnival grounds, muted by tent walls that loomed like sentinels as he crept around them. He took care not to wander too close and risk discovery.
