“I don’t understand,” Gershwin said. He’d keyed-in the deactivation code four times but to no effect. The alarm wasn’t responding. The warning blips had sped up to the point where they formed one sustained note. A moment later the alarm blared. It sounded like an ambulance siren. “G, I think you should look over there!” She was pointing toward the kitchen area, shouting so that he could hear her over the alarm. GThe full extent of what was going on wasn’t clear to him yet. He glanced at the open fridge before turning his attention back to the alarm. “I’m scared!” She hadn’t moved from just inside the front door. “Stay where you are!” he shouted, unnecessarily.
