Kimberly POV
I was actually nervous to be seen with two gorgeous boys. If River’s the current president of the student council, then he must be popular. And that would make Ryder popular too. In addition to that, the twins would not have any problem attracting people, more like the ladies. They were like magnets with their gorgeous looks and charming smile.
I hope I wouldn’t get in trouble for being with them tonight.
I would have avoided this problem if I had not said yes to River. I internally sighed at the thought.
“So, Kimmie, what magic can you do?” River asked me while we were walking towards the dining hall.
“Nothing much. I was not allowed to use magic or witchcraft when I was growing up.”
“What? Why not?” It was Ryder. He looked curious with his eyebrows up to his forehead. I thought he would completely ignore me throughout the evening. He was not entirely friendly towards me. But now, I think that he was at least warming up to me.
“It’s a long story.” I shrugged my shoulders.
“We have one year to cover that.” River gave me a wink.
I didn’t want to start off with my sad story, so I answered again the original question instead.
“The little things I have done were to move small things, put fire in our fireplace, and burned a paper in my hands.” I was blushing because the magic I had done was literally next to nothing.
“Well, you will be glad that you got in this school. You will learn a lot.”
“I tried to use magic inside my room this afternoon. Tried to move my clothes from my suitcase to my closet but nothing happened.”
“The room is magic itself. Anyway, you will learn fast. I wished I could have gotten witchcraft as my minor subject this term.” River frowned but immediately smiled after. “Next term I will! So, we could be classmates!” He looked pretty ecstatic.
“What? What about training? And you are in the student council. You want more responsibility on your plate?” Ryder sounded shocked.
“We can get three to four minors, Ryder. Witchcraft would be my fourth.”
“I’m already tired with three.” He grumbled. “But, yeah, witchcraft sounded cool. So, I could prank people back in the palace.” He then put on an evil grin.
I smothered a chuckle but somehow, I still made a sound.
“What are you laughing at, little witch? Well, show us what you can do.”
I didn’t know who they were calling little. I was not exactly small. The two of them are tall and I reach up to their chin. That says something.
“Yeah, can you show us something?” River got excited.
Before I knew it, River was handing me a paper. I stopped and they followed. After a couple of seconds of concentration, a small fire engulfed the paper. The ashes were the only proof that was left in my hands and I let them scatter in the air.
“Cool.” River said lowly. Ryder shrugged and continued to walk. River and I followed, with the student council president praising what I did.
“It was the only thing that I could do.”
“Perhaps your element is fire.” River gushed. “In here, you get to do all elements. I saw witches and wizards do them. Actually, we are challenged with what you guys can do.”
“Are you werewolves?” I asked in a whisper. I didn’t want to ask actually as it might sound offensive.
“Yeah! How did you know?”
“I saw you sniffing earlier. You had your noses up in the air.” Ryder laughed loudly.
“And some people thought we were snobs.” Ryder laughed again. “When we were only sniffing.”
“True.” River chuckled.
We had just stepped inside the dining hall and I was blown away when almost everyone looked our way. The dining hall looked like the one we had in the palace. Huge with massive crystal chandeliers. There were rows of long elegant-looking tables. One would know that it was meant for royalty.
“Food is served buffet-style in all meals.” That was what Ms. Blaire told us earlier.
I could feel the shift in the air as everyone went silent but then in a snap people were standing and coming towards us. Boys and girls were greeting both the boys. River had his hand behind the small of my back guiding me to a table. His other hand was making high-fives with the other students. Ryder was having the time of his life fist-bumping and giving people high fives.
While I was scouting for an area at the farther tables, my eyes locked with Alice’s. They were narrowed and she was obviously mad at what she was witnessing. She was seated near the middle of the dining hall. Alice rolled her eyes and whispered something to the girl beside her. It must be something about me because her friend looked up at me almost immediately.
Wow, she had made a friend. That was fast and so not like her.
When I found an empty row of seats at the end of the hall, I tugged River’s shirt.
“Thank you for taking me here. I will just sit there.” I pointed to the vacant seat.
“No!” Both of us stopped walking. “You will sit with us.” To my utter shock, he moved his hand further around my waist and then guided me to their table. I saw how a few eyes widened when River did what he did.
However, there were only two seats available. One for River and another one for Ryder. That means I can’t really sit with them. I looked up and found Alice again with an evil smirk on her lips. She was quietly observing me.
River and Ryder looked at each other. Ryder shrugged while River found the situation amusing.
“Perhaps it wouldn’t be bad to sit at the end of the hall.” I nodded in understanding that I would have to sit somewhere else. He turned around and then I found us walking to the almost vacant table. When we came close to it, I took the courage to speak out.
“Thank you for walking me here. I will be fine. You can already go back to your seat.” I looked sheepishly at River.
“Who said we will be leaving you. We are going to sit here with you.” I saw Ryder took a seat, while River assisted me in between them.
