Chapter 9 The Secrets

941 Words
Jake and Emily a quiet table near the window to sit and talk after they ordered their coffee. It was a beautiful day, so there were not many people inside, giving the two old friends more privacy to talk.   "Emily, I have thought of you all of these years, but I was so busy. That is the only reason why it took me so long to contact you,” Jake smiled affectionately.   Blushing, Emily didn’t know what to say. Jake had been her first love, but she was young.     Seeing that Emily was not telling him to stop talking, Jake felt happy. He reassured her, "I am back, and I don't plan to leave. I want to open a company here, and maybe we can see each other more often in the future?"   "Huh?" Emily looked up at Jake in surprise. She saw his eyes were full of tenderness, leaving her lost in her feelings. She couldn't believe that he was not leaving and wanted to see her more; it took her a moment to understand what he was saying. Emily wasn't sure how she could manage having Kevin as a fake boyfriend if Jake was around all of the time.   When Emily didn't say anything, Jake started to become a little nervous. He reached out to touch her hand, but a waiter walked over to the table.   "Miss?" The waiter said to Emily.   Jake was pissed that the waiter messed up his plan.   “Someone asked me to give this to you, Miss,” He said as he handed her a card.   "Damn! Who is trying to steal my woman away while I am sitting here?" Jack cursed.   Emily frowned; she wondered who would be so bold.   Both she and Jake looked over to where the waiter was pointing; both of them were shocked. An older woman with gray hair and a graceful smile sat watching them. She looked to be someone of wealth and importance since two bodyguards stood behind her.   The woman observed Jake and Emily's interactions from the moment they walked in as if Emily was her own daughter.   Jake was furious, but he would not dare say anything to the woman because of her large bodyguards.   After a moment of hesitation, Emily opened the card.   Jake, male, 30 years old One year ago, he lost all his fortune gambling. He was rescued by Jameson and returned to Pittsburgh, where he is currently working as a vice president of Skyline Group under the Cruise Group.   Emily was irate with Jake, he was trying to scam her, and she was no fool. She was the one who made her company successful with all of her hard work. She frowned when she realized that talking to Jake wasn't just to catch up.   As she continued to read, Emily was even more surprised.   Kevin, male, 29 years old He joined the army at age 16 after he graduated from junior high school.   She could not believe that two men fooled her. Emily handed the card back to the waiter, then the woman got up and left.     Jake had no idea what the card said, but he figured it was not good by the weird smile on Emily's face.   *** Nina paced back and forth in the president's office at Fox Group while Kevin played on his phone.   “Kevin, how can you be so calm? Don’t forget that it is your job as my sister’s boyfriend to protect her. However, she is out with Jake, who she used to love. Now, you will need to guard her all night.”   Kevin just smiled and said nothing. It was not something he could control; if she wanted to go with Jake, nobody could stop her.   A barrage of text messages interrupted the game Kevin was playing. He got excited, hoping that it was a new mission until he saw his personal information. He didn't understand if someone was just playing with him because the information had been changed drastically.   The commander of the reconnaissance battalion had retired, which was absurd. However, what was even more ridiculous was that he had no idea who would hire him to be the commander.   In the past seven years, the students Kevin trained were all elite soldiers in the reconnaissance battalion directly under the division and also company commanders. There had to be a mistake, or maybe it was part of the mission, Kevin thought.     He was startled from his deep concerns when Emily pushed her way into the office. It was apparent to Kevin that she was filled with rage.   Emily had asked Jake about his job; he explained that he planned to open a Skyline Real Estate office and invited Emily to join him. He wasn't aware that she knew he was lying, and Cruise Group was actually behind Skyline, not him. As Emily sat at her desk, she smiled at Kevin and calmly said, "Kevin, can you briefly tell me about yourself?"   Kevin didn't know how to respond; he just stared at her beautiful smile that had hidden danger behind it. It was like a sharp knife, and he was worried about what he should say. Then he thought of the internal information he had just received.   "Okay, well, I can't tell you all of the details because it is classified, and I must keep that between my leader and me. Otherwise, I could be put in jail sooner than later."   A look of disbelief flashed in Emily’s eyes, then she looked disappointed. Kevin was correct though, somethings really couldn’t be revealed.
