Chapter 11 Jakes love for Amy

Jake originally planned to confess his love for Emily as soon as she arrived. However, he couldn’t do that in front of her fiancé. At least if Kevin and Emily had shown up wearing something else, even if they held hands, Jake would have taken the chance of confessing. However, if he tried to tell her, he would look senseless.

It was embarrassing, but Jake could not walk away because Emily and Kevin had seen him. When they got closer, Kevin said, "Oh, you are dressed rather formally. Are you going to profess your love to someone? Maybe someone you liked when you were in school? That is wonderful."

There was nothing Jake could say, so he hummed and hawed, worried that Kevin might kill him.

Before either of them could speak, they were distracted by a Volkswagen Phaeton arriving. The door opened, and an overweight woman stepped out.

Kevin was shocked to see that the woman was waving to Emily.

"Emily, I haven't seen you for years! But you are more beautiful than I remember!" The woman, Amy, commented. She and Emily had gone to school together.

Amy was slowly walking toward them, and Kevin assumed it was because of her weight, so he said, "Damn!"

Several people who were nearby glared at him, thinking he was out of his mind. He patted Jake’s shoulder and exclaimed, “You have great taste! I am telling you, she may be a little heavy, but I believe if she loses some weight, she might be as beautiful as my woman.”

Neither Jake nor the others understood what Kevin was talking about. Then suddenly, Kevin took a step forward and grasped Amy's hand, "I am Emily's fiancé, Kevin. I want to apologize to you."

"Why are you apologizing to me?" Amy was confused.

Kevin turned around and made an exaggerated gesture toward Jake. He smiled and commented, "Look at Jake; he is so handsome and has flowers in his hand. He is here to confess his love, and he told me he is waiting for his sweetheart."

Before Jake could react, Kevin put his arm around Emily, who was trembling with anger. She was furious at the thought of Kevin trying to take advantage of her; she would be deducting money from his pay.

“We thought there would be traffic and we would be late. However, we were wrong and arrived before Jake could declare his feelings…” Kevin paused on purpose, “We were a bit early, and now we are the third wheels. So, I am apologizing for disrupting your night. I am sorry, Jake, go ahead with your speech. Oh, and don’t forget to get down on one knee.”

Suddenly everyone understood what Kevin had been saying, Jake was in love with Amy, but they had arrived before her. Amy was also taken aback; her plump cheeks were red with embarrassment. She never thought that the handsome guy from school, the top student at that, would like her.

Since Amy and Emily were the only women in their graduating class who were attending the reunion, Jake had no choice. He wanted to cry when he realized he could not tell Emily he loved her because she was obviously in a relationship with Kevin. He never expected that his plans would fail.

Emily was chuckling under her breath when she clued into how Kevin had tricked Jake. If he refused, people would think that it was because Kevin had seen through his scheme. She quickly encouraged, "Jake, if you back out now, it would be so disappointing. After all, Amy is the only single woman here; I have a fiancé. So, everyone understands your true feelings already."

Inside, Jake was filling with rage; he was cursing Emily and Kevin for working together. And now, they were cheering others on for support.

"Come on; I'll help you! Don’t be nervous!" Kevin said, stepping forward, pushing Jake toward Amy, and kicked lightly on his knee.

Jake was unstable and fell to the ground on one leg, "I…"

"You don't need to say anything," Kevin interrupted Jake and patted him on the back.

Jake's hands raised involuntarily to hand the flowers to Amy as if he was proposing.

"Thank you," Amy said as she accepted the flowers.

Jake felt as if he was going to die. None of this was in his plan, but Kevin touched his back with a bit more force when he wanted to speak. He didn't know what was happening, he couldn't open his mouth, and his body felt numb.

Kevin stretched out his hand to help Jake up, “Congratulations, the proposal was a success! Come on, let’s go in and have dinner now!”

"I..." Jake realized that he could talk again but found that no one paid any attention to him.

"Jake, I never thought you would be in love with me,” Amy shyly said.

The way she looked at him made Jake feel sick. Seeing her reach out for his arm, Jake rushed toward the restaurant, swearing, "Kevin, I will not let you go!"

When he thought of how to get back at Kevin, he smiled. Jake knew he had to get Emily; it was his mission.

Amy watched Jake walking away from her and smiled, "Why are you acting so shy? You have got down on one knee and gave me flowers."

After that, she smelled the bouquet of flowers; the scene left people feeling sad for her. They could see that she would be heartbroken when she found out the truth; she was not the woman Jake was in love with.
