ALPHA LUKE POV
DAYS LATER
I’m trying my best to hide my disappointment and Art's displeasure. The mating social is nearly over and although several of our pack members found their mates, we did not find our Luna. It doesn’t matter to Art that I’ve managed to sway three packs into coming back to discuss forming alliances. My pack is strong, happy and unaware that their Alpha and his wolf are restless to find their mate. It doesn’t help that some of the Alpha’s that are returning to discuss alliances have offered their daughters as chosen mates. Art refuses to take a chosen mate at this point. He insists we haven’t spent the proper time in search of the gift our moon goddess has made for us.
As much as I agree with him, I don’t think he understands that we don’t have the time to go in search for her. “I won’t settle, Luke. Our mate was made for us, she will compliment us perfectly and make us stronger. If you don’t look for her you aren’t worthy of her.” Art threatens calmly, he is becoming more and more insistent. He’s always been level headed and reasonable, but recently he’s been more and more impatient. I can’t have this conversation with him right now. There was no explaining that I wanted the same thing he wanted, but I just couldn’t neglect my Pack right now to search for our mate. He wouldn’t accept my excuses and I wouldn’t blame him.
Jordan walked over and stood next to me with a frown on his face. “Alpha Adam Meraz of the Dark Shadows pack is requesting a private audience with you and former Alpha Liam.” Jorden seemed peeved by the request. “Everything okay?” I started to walk towards my office with him following. I didn’t plan on denying the Alpha but Jordan’s aura led me to believe that the request was more of a demand. “I don’t know Luke. Bakari has been pacing around in my head since the Alpha insisted on speaking with you in private.” He explained with a worried look on his face. Art perked up at the obvious warning, ready to shift if needed.
We entered my office where Alpha Adam and someone I presume to be his Beta were already sitting on the seats in front of my desk. Rounding the desk, I sized him up. There was something familiar about him, but that couldn’t be possible because I had never met him. I took a seat as my father walked in. As soon as he caught the scent of the Alpha, he stiffened and walked to stand next to me, never taking his eyes off Alpha Adam. “What can I help you with Alpha Adam.” He looked over to my father and then back at me.
“I’m here to claim what’s mine.” He stated vaguely.
Instinctively, my father and I exuded our aura. He didn’t need to tell us what it was he wanted, for us to know that whatever it was, clearly belonged to us. Or he wouldn’t be speaking with us.“We have nothing of yours here.” I shrugged my shoulders dismissively.
A wicked grin appeared on his face as he turned to my father. “This pack is rightfully mine, you and I both know that. You have thirty days to hand over my pack or I will take it by force. Let’s go, Cisco.” Turning to look at me once more, he got up and they both walked out.
"You should have killed him for not acknowledging us as Alpha!” Art growled. I had bigger problems. My father was clearly hiding something from me and I couldn’t fix things if I didn’t know what was going on. “Calm down, we need to know why we are killing someone before we kill them.” I explained even though I was close to losing it. “You really don’t. That’s your problem, you want to talk everything to death but take no action.” Art complains before shutting me out. I really need to find our mate. Unfortunately, now I need to figure out why my father is trying to tip-toe his way out of my office as if he’s not over six feet and a grown man.
“Sit down dad.” Before I can use my Alpha command, he opens the door and faces me. “I need to talk to your mother first. We can talk tomorrow.” He didn’t wait for my reply before walking out. Just like that, Jordan and I are left alone in my office, unsure of what any of this meant. We just had an Alpha of a neighboring pack demand our pack from us with no explanation. It’s clear that our former Alpha, my father, knows what’s going on but has more important things to do than enlighten us.
BECKY POV
ACTON CA
It’s all in your head, no one knows what you’re hiding. They are all looking at you because they are nosy and have nothing better to do than gossip about the problem child. Your brother and sister-in-law are happy you are here and that’s all that matters. Heck, even mom and dad are happy and haven’t once tried to convince me to come back and get a "real" job.
“Hey prima (cousin), finally starting to grow up I hear. It’s about time you at least moved out.” Patty, my cousin mocks. It’s on the tip of my tongue to remind her that she had to trap a man with a baby for him to leave his fiancé and marry her. Poor guy looks miserable. Serves him right for jumping from one concha (cudder) to another instead of being faithful. Then I remember my current situation… “Yeah Patty, we can’t all be as lucky as you.” Giving her a fake smile, I get the hell away from her.
I get along with most of my extended family, but Patty is a different story. My uncle Javier, her father, is my godfather and loves me to death. He always gives my mom crap for being so hard on me and not supporting my dreams of being a photographer. He praises me every chance he gets and even bought me my first camera. Patty is a daddy’s girl all the way and hates to share.
Sighing in relief when I was out of the danger zone, I realized I had walked right into the kitchen where my mother was busy ordering people around. Her specialty. “Que bueno que estas aqui (Good you're here). Tell me how everything is going over there.” She hasn’t once stopped filling serving trays as she grills me. “Todo va bien (Everything is going well). Still working with Letty and still planning on getting a house out there as soon as I save up enough.” I replied while fiddling with the safety pin on my top.
I’ve managed not to cross my arms and legs for a whole two hours. You laugh, but it’s much harder than it sounds. The only thing I suck at is catching people and taking them away. I’m much too distracted right now. My tia (aunt) Vero is like a ninja, sneaking up on you when you least expect it and snatching it away with no shame. That woman is scary.
“No boyfriends.” She looks up at me finally. I shake my head no and gracias a Dios (thank God). My uncle Javier walks in, gives my mom, his little sister, a playful shove. He can always tell when she’s cornering me. “Mija! Como estas?” (Darling! How are you?) He hugs me so tight that my worries fade away. “Bien tio (Good uncle), I missed you.” He pulls away and holds me by my shoulders. Quirking an eyebrow up and analyses my face and squints his eyes at me. He’s always been way to good at reading me.
“I’m going to go see Alice and Jason, I’m leaving tomorrow and I want to spend time with them.” I announced and made a run for it.
As nervous as I was about coming here and facing everyone, I have to admit it hasn’t been that bad. My parents are being supportive, for the most part. My brother and his wife are beaming with joy over their new baby and they most definitely deserve it. I’ve always found it comical that we usually have the entire family at baby showers, not just the women but the men and children too. The men all hide from the women by the food while the women play silly games. Once they get tired of playing, they drag the men over so they can watch them play equally silly games. They act like they don’t want to do it but end up playing harder than any of us.
Taking a seat on the sofa, I looked around and admired my crazy family, which I hadn’t seen in a while. “Aja! Tus piernas están cruzadas (Your legs are crossed), hand it over!” My tia popped out of nowhere and started trying to remove my safety pin. “Tia Vero! Me asustaste!” (Aunt Vero! You scared me!) I shoved her hands away from my goodies and took off the safety pin for her. She scoffs at me and smiles widely when she adds another safety pin to her top. She has to have at least twenty right now. She’s been eyeing my cousin Leslie, who has managed to get ten herself. The men are lucky all they have to do is try to drink a beer out of a baby bottle the fastest.
