2. She’s mouthy

BECKY POV TWO WEEKS LATER Looking outside the window of the diner as I finished my lunch, I noticed Mr. Scowly ranger talking to Mr. Houdini, Matt. If he hadn’t pulled that disappearing act on me three weeks ago, I’d have admired his bright smile, the dark brown curly hair that falls over his right eye and thick neat beard. That is what drew me to him, that and all those muscles. As if they feel my eyes on them, Matt and Mr. Scowly look my way. So, naturally, I smile and wave at them. His relaxed stance stiffens and the Scowly one sneers at me. Just like that, they both jump into his truck and high tail it out of here. As if I was going to run out of the diner and chase after him. The se*x was good, but not good enough to embarrass myself. Plus, I may have liked him, but that was the extent. Gracias a dios. (Thank God) MATT POV Three months ago, my Alpha sent me into Washougal to check in on the businesses owned by the pack, as well as the pack members we have working and staying in the area. Having pack members in the area allows us to keep eyes on the comings and goings of the more adventurous humans that venture out into the wilderness. Each pack is responsible for a city that borders or is near their territory. The more populated the world becomes, the less space we have, no matter how deep in the forest we settle. Technology doesn’t help, drones, phones and satellites. I am a believer that sometime in the future more and more humans will be aware that we exist. The fact that our Beta has been fated to a human solidifies my belief. I didn’t expect to find a little human female that could manage to hold my attention for more than a few days. It took me more than a month to get close to her. My wolf liked her and we were considering making her our chosen mate. I just needed a little more time, he was almost sure, but I needed him to be one hundred percent sure. Once you mark and mate, there is no going back. That all changed the weekend I went back to the pack after being with Becky. Our pack had our mating social and I found my fated mate. Naomi. My perfect other half. For the past three weeks, I’ve been avoiding Becky. It was a d**k move to disappear without giving her an explanation, but as Gamma of my pack, I had other duties and wasn’t going to be coming around anymore anyway. I figured it was easier this way. It was just my luck that I had to come back here to deal with some complaints we’ve been getting about Trevor, Ranger Brand. I was nervous I would run into her. It was bad enough. I had to deal with the wannabe sheriff. I caught him outside of the diner and tried to handle things there so I could get back to my mate. As Trevor rambled on I could feel eyes on me. When he finally stopped talking, I turned and caught her dark brown eyes looking in our direction. I wasn’t expecting her to smile and wave at us. I told Trevor to get in the truck and drove off. “Watch out for that one, she’s mouthy.” Trevor scowled, looking out the window in her direction. “This asshole needs to mind his own business.” Lex growled. Although I agreed, his aggressiveness surprised me. One thing was for him to consider taking a chosen mate, but now that we marked and mated our fated, he shouldn’t be this protective. “How do you know?” I asked, never taking my eyes off the road. “I’ve run into her a few times, she always gives me attitude.” Puffing out his chest, he fixed his collar. “She’s new around here. Tiny little thing with more attitude than her frame can support.” He sneered. Gee, I wonder why he has so many complaints from not only tourists but from residents and business owners. “Thanks for the advice. How about we talk about why I’m here to see you.” I parked the car and pointed at the coffee shop in front of us. It’s times like these that I’m glad I kept a low profile while visiting Becky. He didn’t know that I knew her, and it’s better that he didn’t. That no one did. BECKY POV After lunch, I finally called my parents and my brother for our weekly check-in. I say our but the truth is they are checking on me. After I told my parents that I was still working with Letty and saving up for my own place, they seemed satisfied. I made no mention of the male species because, in my mind, the forest dweller didn’t count. My brother didn’t like the fact that I was out here on my own. He suggested I come visit him for a few days so we could “catch up”. In other words, he wanted to look me in the eyes and grill me. He’s only thirteen months older than me and he acts like I’m a baby. Probably because I don’t have my life together like he does. He’s married with a now pregnant wife, owns his own house and is a big shot Park Manager for the National Park in San Francisco. Me? I was a freelance photographer who lived with my parents. Now… I’m finally starting to find my place here. So yeah, he tends to treat me like a child because I’m late in finding my place. I wish I wasn’t such a disappointment. I’m not as bad as they make me seem. I went to school, just not a four-year college. Only taking classes that helped me hone my skills in photography. The jobs I worked paid me well and I was highly sought out back in Los Angeles. My biggest crime is not getting a degree. After Jason graduated from college, nothing I did was going to measure up. At first, I was okay with that because I’m not like him. He’s a by-the-book kind of guy and I’m happy for him. I’m sure that if I show them I can make it out here, doing what I love. They will understand and see that I made the right choice.
