Heat

Kira's agonized screams pierced the air as a Rogue wolf sank its teeth into her arm, dragging her toward the lifeless bodies of other humans. Blood spilled from her mouth, and she gazed at the sky, resigned to her impending death. Her thoughts turned to her father and the life she had left behind in the human world. Tears streamed down her cheeks as she awaited her demise, but it never came. Suddenly, arrows emerged from nowhere, striking the wolves in their necks and toppling them to the ground. "The king, in his benevolence, allows you to live on this day, his birthday," the Announcer bellowed, and the crowd erupted in applause, chanting the name of their King. "Hail to the king!" echoed throughout the arena. Despite his desire for her suffering, Nolan couldn't bear to witness her death. Meeting Kira had taken him by surprise, discovered that she was his mate. It was an unprecedented occurrence as no wolf had been matched with a human for centuries. He hadn't anticipated that the human he despised would turn out to be his mate. Although he initially wanted her to perish in the Arena, his wolf relentlessly pleaded for their mates to be saved. When he felt her pain through the bond they shared, he knew he had to let her live. "Why didn't you let her die, Your Majesty?" Luna queen Chloe asked, raising an eyebrow and her eyes clouded with jealousy as she questioned the king, "Do you have feelings for the human?" Nolan gently lifted Luna's chin and smiled. "Don't say things you won't be able to handle later, my queen," he cautioned. "I saved her merely because this game was becoming dull," he declared, standing up. "I've had enough amusement. I'm retiring to my room!" Nolan turned away, glad that he had saved her just in time. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mara sobbed as she wrapped a piece of cloth tightly around Kira's wounded arm. "The blood won't stop, and it's all my fault," she cried, her dress stained with Kira's blood. "If Kira hadn't saved you, you would've died. The Alpha King favors her because he spared her life," Sandra explained, leaning against the cell door. "Tragically, so many of our companions have perished," she sniffled. Phaedra sighed, rubbing her neck wearily. "How is her arm, Mara?" she inquired, concerned. "She'll be fine," Mara reassured them. "They used to call me the girl with the Healing Touch back in school, so I believe it will help her for a while. But she needs proper medical attention." Sandra tutted and scoffed. "She won't receive the treatment you expect. When humans are injured, they're left to die." "What's wrong with you?" Mara questioned, taken aback. "I understand you're grieving for your friend's death, but that doesn't justify your words!" Sandra laughed, running her fingers through her hair. "What do you expect me to say, little girl? We, humans, have no hope, and just because she was spared from death doesn't mean she won't die eventually!" "Enough!" Phaedra shouted. "Let's put an end to the fighting and be grateful that we survived," she pleaded. "We must find a way out of here, and if we can't, we have to blend in to stay alive!" Sandra groaned, collapsing on the ground as Mara returned to tend to Kira, who was now unconscious. The bleeding from her arm had ceased. "You need to wake up soon so we know if you're okay," Mara whispered, cradling Kira's head on her shoulder and planting a gentle kiss on her cheek. "You must live, for the sake of your father!" "We'll make it," Phaedra reassured them, lying down on the ground. "We have to," she whispered. At midnight, Kira's screams jolted the girls awake. She writhed on the ground, clutching her stomach. "What's happening?" Sandra demanded, rushing to Kira's side. "Kira," she said, tapping her on the shoulder. "Stop screaming, or we'll face punishment," she murmured. "She's in pain," Mara said, cradling Kira's head on her lap and feeling her forehead. It burned like fire. But it wasn't just her forehead; Kira's entire body felt ablaze, and every touch elicited screams of agony. "Water!" Kira pleaded in hushed tones. "I need water," she cried, another wave of stomach pain hitting her. It felt as if her insides were tied in knots, searing with fire. "I'm going to die!" she screamed. "Someone fetch water!" Mara yelled, restraining Kira from further injuring herself or rolling on the ground. Phaedra banged on the cell door. "Is anyone out there?" she shouted, frustration in her voice. "Don't kick the door like that; it will only aggravate them," Sandra cautioned. "No one will bring her water!" She grabbed Phaedra's hand, attempting to pull her away, but Phaedra resisted and pushed her to the ground. "Don't be selfish! Someone is on the brink of death, and all you can think about is yourself! Have some compassion!" Phaedra yelled, kicking the cell door once more. "Please, help us!" she pleaded. Sandra retreated to a corner upon hearing heavy footsteps approaching. "I warned you," she trembled, burying her face in her hands. The cell door was forcefully kicked open, and three guards stormed in. "What's going on here?" one of them demanded. "She's dying and needs water," Phaedra said, pointing to Kira, who lay in Mara's arms. "Then let her die," the second guard exclaimed callously, laughing. "Do you think we care if she lives or dies?" He approached Kira, sniffing her and letting out a moan. "She smells delightful. She's in heat!" he informed his companions. "Heat?" the other guards exclaimed in astonishment. "But she's human, and it's been centuries since anyone heard of a human mate," the third guard remarked. "I was surprised too, but I believe her mate rejected her, which means we can have our way with her," the second guard stated, grabbing Kira away from Mara's grasp. "What are you doing?" Mara demanded, clutching Kira's other arm. "We're trying to alleviate her suffering," the second guard replied, kicking Mara in the face. She released Kira's arm, crying in pain as her lips began to bleed. "She smells exquisite," he remarked as he dragged Kira towards a corner and pinned her to the ground. "What is your intention with her?" Phaedra pleaded, attempting to rush to Kira's aid, but she was kicked in the leg. She stumbled and fell to the ground. "Ouch!" she exclaimed, grabbing hold of one of the guard's legs. "Whatever you think you can do to her, it's not going to happen," she declared, sliding under the guard and delivering a powerful kick to his back. The other guard charged at her, but Phaedra's reflexes were quicker. She slammed him against the cell door and landed a punch on his face. "Not all humans are weak!" she shouted defiantly. The first guard lunged at her with a knife, but Phaedra swiftly kicked his leg, twisted his hand, and snatched the knife from his grip. In the blink of an eye, she slit the first guard's throat and stabbed him in the chest. Sandra let out a scream as the guard collapsed beside her. The third guard charged at Phaedra, landing a blow to her face. Mara grabbed Phaedra's hand, pulling her closer as she stumbled backward. "Thank you," Phaedra said, lunging at the third guard. She slashed his back and repeatedly stabbed his chest. "Good," Phaedra exclaimed, her face splattered with blood. "Die, you animals!" she screamed. The second guard released his hold on Kira and rushed towards Phaedra, but Sandra struck him on the head with a large stone. The guard collapsed to the ground, groaning in agony. "Die!" Sandra yelled, repeatedly striking the guard's head. "Die!" she screamed, continuing to hit him even after he was lifeless. "That's enough!" Phaedra pulled Sandra away, tossing the stone into a corner. "He's no longer a threat," she said, patting Sandra on the shoulder. Mara hurried over to Kira, lifting her gently off the ground. She sat down on the floor, cradling Kira's head on her lap. "You're going to be fine," she whispered, caressing Kira's cheek. The sound of approaching footsteps made the girls fall silent. They exchanged anxious glances as five more guards, led by Gamma Felix, entered the cell. "What in the world happened here?" he demanded. "I need water," Kira cried out in agony. Gamma Felix took a deep breath and turned his attention to Kira. "This can't be," he murmured, his voice filled with disbelief.
