Christian
Everything was happening fast. In just 24 hours, I would be celebrating my birthday and would finally get to mark Trinity. We were learning a lot about one another. In the few days we had spent together, we found out we shared many common interests. We were compatible in every single way. It was almost scary.
My mom wasn’t speaking to me and Paige told everyone Trinity was my chosen mate and I wasn’t listening to reason. It was honestly ridiculous. I was glad to say that there hadn’t been any bullying though. I don’t know how I’d react to it now that we were so close to making things official. Trinity was noticeably happier, too.
I groaned as I got up to get ready for school. Trinity crossed my mind as I stretched. The thought of seeing her made me and Maceo excited. I dressed quickly and grabbed my backpack, hurrying out of my room to get to Trinity. My dad allowed her to move onto the visitors’ floor, so she was just below us. It made it just a little easier to sneak down and see her after my parents had gone to bed.
Her door opened just as I raised my hand to knock. She gave me a pleasant smile, closing and locking the door.
“Good morning, Tee.” I gave her a peck.
“Good morning. You woke up on the right side of the bed, I see.”
I chuckled, grabbing her hand and pulling her along. It was weird having everyone stare, but as long as Trinity was ok, I could deal with it. I didn’t understand why my mom and sister were so against our union. Trinity was an Alpha. I thought she was perfect. If the rest of the pack could fall in line, my own family should too.
Paige approached me quickly, looking slightly embarrassed.
“What are you doing?! You can’t walk in here holding her hand!” She yamked my arm, but I didn’t budge.
“Paige, let it go. She is my mate and she will be your Luna one day.” Trinity squeezed my hand.
Paige huffed, giving Trinity a glaring look before taking off.
“Why does she hate me so much?”
I sighed.
“I guess because my mom does.” I sucked in my breath, immediately regretting what I had just said.
I glanced at Trinity as her eyes welled with tears.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t me—“
“It’s ok. You only confirmed what I already knew.” She pulled her hand away. The bell rang.
“I have to get to class. See you after school.” She hurried down the hall. I was frozen in place.
“Way to go, brodie.”
“Not right now, Maceo.”
“Then when? Someone needs to tell you when you’re an asshole.”
I sighed.
“Find a way to make it up to her. Thank me later.”
Maceo retreated. I sulked to my first class, brainstorming ways to apologize.
The final bell rang to dismiss us. I waited by the large tree at the front of the school. I spotted Trinity chatting with a girl I had never seen before.
“Hey!” Trinity seemed to be in a much better mood.
“Hi, babe.” I wrapped an arm around her waist. The girl stood there awkwardly.
“Christian, this is Stacey.”
“Nice to meet you. I’m the future Alpha of White Crescent.”
Her jaw dropped.
“You’re mated to the future Alpha?” She stared at Trinity in disbelief. Trinity glanced around.
“Guilty.” She laughed nervously.
“Where do you live? We can walk you home.”
“Um, well … I actually live at the packhouse. My parents passed away, so the Alpha and Luna are taking me in since I have no family.
Trinity looked sad and angry at once. I didn’t want to make it a habit of setting up daily meetings with my dad, but he had some explaining to do.
Trinity
I sat down on my bed and folded my arms. I was seething. Was this their plan? Take in orphans to make them work? I got up to pace.
“Just stay calm. Christian is going to handle it.”
“But what if he can’t? It’s one thing to advocate for his mate, but would they budge for Stacey?”
“I don’t know. What I do know is that you should sit down. You’re stressing us both out.”
I sat back down and fell backward, staring at the ceiling. No way they went and bought another orphan to the packhouse just to have her do the chores.
“You don’t know for sure that they’re going to treat her badly. Don’t jump to conclusions.”
Carmen was absolutely right, but I pushed her to the back of my mind. I needed to think, uninterrupted. A soft knock cut my time short. I answered the door. Christian stood with his hands in his pockets.
“What did they say?”
“She’s not here to do manual labor. Her parents were warriors in another pack. Her father was a longtime friend of my dad’s, so they took her in. Her old pack doesn’t have an orphanage.”
I sighed in relief. Christian pulled me against his body.
“You’re going to be 18 tomorrow.”
“Yep. Older, wiser, taller, more responsibilities.”
“When do you take over?”
“Whenever my dad decides to retire.”
“Does being Alpha make you nervous?” He c****d his head to the side as he pondered my question.
“In some ways. I’ll be responsible for a pack of over 500 werewolves. That’s pretty scary to think about. But with you by my side, I think I’ll manage.” He winked, making me blush.
