(Dahlia’s POV) “What was the result?” My shoulders sagged painfully as I stared at what was in my hand. “It was showing two red lines. Positive.” “You’re pregnant, Dahlia!” She exclaimed in shock. She also couldn’t believe it. My tears fell, and I almost felt my feet shaking. It was like the heaviness of the world was on my shoulders. Sympathetically, Jannah hugged me and tapped my back. “It’s alright. You’re going to be alright, my friend. Everything will be fine.” I nodded. Yeah. I hope to surpass all these trials in my life. “Anyway, what’s your plan now? Are you going to find the father of the baby?” I shook my head without a second thought. “No. That’s the last thing I’ll ever do here, Jaja. First, it’s impossible to find him. I was drunk, and I couldn’t remember his face. I don’t even know him. And most of all, I’m responsible for this, so I’m going to raise this child alone.” “But it will surely be difficult for you, Dahlia. Raising your child alone and with no one beside you to guide and help you.” I nodded. “Yeah. Sure, it will. But being a mom is always hard and takes many sacrifices. Isn’t it? Now that it’s already there, I have to face it and be brave no matter what. It’s all for the baby in my womb.” She understood me, and once again, she hugged me. I couldn’t help but feel so many mixed emotions. If only I hadn’t been so careless that night. If only I were cautious enough, maybe none of these problems would come to me… I was a fool and weak. I didn’t use my brain, and I let my body control my whole body that night, and that was why I ended up being put in a difficult situation like this… I could never forget it… what I’ve done… what that man and I have done… It was Jannah’s twenty-third birthday night, and though I didn’t have the thing for going to clubs and bars, I couldn’t just turn her request down to enjoy since it was an important day in her life. It was her birthday, and I couldn’t say no or pass. “Happy birthday, my friend. I wish nothing but happiness for you in your daily life,” I said sincerely as we sat down on one of the couches. The vibrating bass of the music can be felt under our feet, growing louder and more palpable. The place was a spectacle of bright neon lights, and the excited chatter of the queue added to the anticipation. They were utilizing drinks with impressive speed and precision. Laughter, cheers, and a clink of glass rose above the music as folks shared a toast. There was a tidal of sound that seemed to come from every direction. There was a mass of individuals dancing to the beat of the music, their bodies glistening under the strobe lights that penetrated the haze. The DJ was on his own, standing on his elevated platform and expertly controlling the decks to drop rhythms that whipped the crowd into a frenzy. In the corners were lounge areas with plush sofas and low tables, providing a slightly quieter space for those who wanted to chat or take a break from the dance floor. The walls were filled with modern art and the club’s unique decor, contributing to the trendy atmosphere. We hugged. “Thanks, my friend! And thank you for joining me here tonight!” “Yeah! This is a request from a best friend of mine who’s just celebrating her birthday. How can I say no to it!” I chuckled. She laughed. “I know you’re not fond of going to places like this; enjoying a bar’s cozy, moving disco lights isn’t your thing. But you still came here with me to celebrate this simple party I threw for myself. Thank you so much, Dahlia. I appreciate it.” I nodded wholeheartedly. She was only a year older than me, so we’ve been close friends since high school. She raised her hand to the counter and ordered drinks for us. It didn’t take too long for the waiter to come, bringing the tray of our glasses for tonight’s liquor. “Wait! Isn’t that Klea? Peterson’s current girlfriend?” I looked behind me, and yeah, Janna’s right. I saw Klea Montenegro, Peterson’s girlfriend, after he and Jannah broke up a few months ago. I watched her. Under the pulsating lights of the bar, she moved with an alluring confidence. Her eyes sparkled with mischief, matching the rhythm of the music that filled the room. Her dress, a shimmering cascade of sequins, caught the light with every move she made. Furthermore, her friends, equally radiant, danced around her, their laughter ringing out over the music. “Yes. That’s her, as far as I could remember.” I looked at Jannah suspiciously. “Don’t tell me you’re bitter toward her because you still have feelings for your ex-boyfriend?” She chuckled and rolled her eyes. “Oh, I am not. Come on! I’m totally over that person. And I’m not bitter. I recognized the woman because she looked familiar, but that was it, Dahlia.” “Good.” She laughed and raised her glass. “Let’s just drink, can’t we?” I agreed and got the remaining glass from the tray at the table. “Yes. Cheers!” As the night continued, Jannah ordered more drinks. We talked about anything under the sun. We laughed at some of our high school experiences. She spilled some tea about our past classmates. And we just thoroughly enjoyed it. As far as I can remember, Jannah had already taken five glasses of liquor, and I just had three. Still, we started to get dizzy until she excused herself because she could no longer hold on to her need to pee. She needed to go to the comfort room. I remained sitting in our lounge. I was holding on to my senses because I was dizzy, and I felt like I was going to sleep. Starting to feel like the chill was too much, I looked at the air-conditioner and wondered if they had set it to its most total level. I wanted to call somebody and ask if they could turn it off or, if not, lower its coldness, but I couldn’t open my mouth, and it seemed like nothing was coming out of my throat. I was already so drunk! A few more minutes passed, and I felt strangely freezing, but still, Jannah hadn’t been back yet. I wanted to go home and put a blanket on to suppress the coldness I was feeling. I looked at my wristwatch. My sight was blurry. I was thinking about Jannah and worried about where she might have been—maybe she got lost. I decided to stand to find her, but I felt faint. It was as if I were about to fall. What bullshit! But I had to fight it because I had to find my friend and ensure she was safe so we could go home and rest. Walking around while leaning against the wall, my whole body was too cold, and it was as if looking for a kind of heat I could not understand. I did not care if people were staring at me because the important thing was discovering where Jannah went and escaping this place! As I continued to walk, my hand found a doorknob. There was a room! I thought that going inside for a few moments wouldn’t be a bad idea at all because I honestly needed to break the cold I was feeling by getting into a high-temperature room. I was almost grateful as I opened it, and it flew open. I didn’t even care if the room was too dark. I locked it to ensure no one else could come in while I was around. I searched for the bed, and when I found it, I laid down immediately, hiding under the blanket. The next thing I knew was that there were muscled arms that wrapped around my body, and I loved their warmth against my skin. I wanted more! I wasn’t alone in the room, but I no longer had the time to think about that. All I ever wanted was body heat, or I wouldn’t survive the massive cold. The masculine body lying next to me started to touch me everywhere, and I responded and gladly obliged. He lavished me with kisses—on my lips, my neck, and my earlobe—until his hand began to unbutton my blouse. I felt his hot lips traveling down my collarbones and into the top of my breasts. The night passed, and the dark room was filled with our moans and groans. Our clothes flew on the floor, and his hot body rocked against mine. I responded and gave in to the kind of fire that my body was longing for. The heat from lovemaking completely conquered the cold. The unusual ceiling that greeted me the following day as I woke up stood in stark contrast to my room’s comfortable ambiance. The sheets weren’t as soothing as the typical cotton ones I had been using. There was an odd scent in the air, like a combination of conditioner and cologne I had never had before. The sunlight filtering in through the window was too bright and too harsh. Slowly, I returned to my senses, and a creeping realization flashed into my mind—I wasn’t in my room! Confusion and curiosity mixed as I sought to piece together the puzzle of where I was and how I got here! I looked at my body and discovered that I was naked beneath this thin sheet! I was alert and tried my best to remember what happened and how I had ended up in this unfamiliar room! Furthermore, I processed in my mind one by one the scenario that just occurred last night. Alright, it was Jannah’s birthday party, and we celebrated in the bar for a few drinks. We talked and took a few glass shots, but that was it. She excused herself for a while because she was going to the comfort room to pee, as she could no longer hold the call of nature. I remained sitting in our lounge waiting for her until I felt super dizzy, and a different kind of cold crept all over me! I could hardly breathe enough for the following events I was trying to recall in my memory! Though it was scary to continue, I still did it, and I took the courage to remember everything! I was worried about Jannah, so I stood up, but drowsiness attacked me. I fought it and searched for her, but I found something else. Instead of going to the comfort room to see my friend, I was tempted to enter the dark room because I wanted to sleep and put on a blanket to escape the coldness torturing my body. The following scenario horrified and terrified me at the same time! There was another person in the bed, lying next to me! A man with steely, warm arms! He wrapped my body and kissed me like there was no tomorrow. I could not do anything but give in and respond because I was so out of my senses until it went further, and I had surrendered myself to that man! I cried hard. My cell phone rang from my bag, and even though I was still shaking in shock after realizing what I had done last night, I forced myself to reach the purse on the floor to answer who was calling. It was Jannah! “Jannah...” “Hello, Dahlia? Finally, you picked it up! Where are you? Have you just woken up? Why did you leave me all alone in the bar last night, huh!” Her voice was a bit mad, but not really. And I was even more shocked upon hearing her say that. “Jannah? I left you?” “Yes, didn’t you? Don’t tell me you forgot about it! You were no longer at our table when I returned from the comfort room last night! I went back there after I peed, but you had already left all by yourself!” “Jannah, no. I didn’t leave you.” “If you didn’t leave me, where would you go, and why did you just get lost suddenly?” I have called and texted you many times, but you did not bother answering. That’s why I thought you had already gone home, and you just left me there—” I looked at the call logs. She was right. There were tons of missed calls from her, which I failed to respond to last night. There were also text messages looking for me and asking me where I went, but none of them I could answer. Comprehending all this and how I became negligent, I cried once more. I just gave in to a stranger that easily! “Hello? Dahlia, are you still there? Wait, are you crying? What’s going on? Are you okay?” I could only cry more. “Jannah!” How careless I was! There was nothing I could do about it anymore.
