Chapter 6: An Old Friend

1242 Words
❤ Jessica’s POV ❤ FOR the next few days, I have not seen the boss or anyone else in the penthouse suite while I was cleaning it. I heard that the boss had to go out of town for a business trip. I was more comfortable cleaning an empty room, and I was able to clean it faster too. Cleaning the penthouse suite on top of the floor that was assigned to me made it harder for me as opposed to the other maids. There have been times that I missed my lunch, and I won’t get to eat until after I get off work. I tried to take short breaks during the afternoon to sneak a bite, and I have started packing sandwiches so that they would be easier to eat. The following week, we were filling out our carts when Melanie said, “I heard that the boss will be back today.” Jessica: “Uhm, do you know what time he’ll be here?” Melanie: “No, I don’t.” Jessica: “I hope he gets here after I’m done cleaning his suite.” Nerissa: “Then you should clean it first and try to get out of there as fast as you can.” Jessica: “I’m definitely doing that.” Melanie: “I’m telling you, Elaine is targeting you. How could she assign a newbie to clean the penthouse suite? It’s like having another floor assigned to you.” Jessica: “Elaine said that the boss asked to have me assigned to clean his suite.”  Nerissa: “Really? Why would he do that?” Melanie: “Well, he’s seen you, right? Maybe he likes you and wants you to clean more than his room.” Melanie giggled while Nerissa tapped her on the shoulder and told her to shut up. I finished refilling my cart and said, “Well, I better go and get a heads up. I’ll see you guys for lunch later. Hopefully.” I made my way to the service elevator and headed to the top floor. I went inside quickly and started cleaning. I started with the master’s bedroom and bathroom inside and moved towards the living area. I was vacuuming the floor when the door opened, and a beautiful woman came in with two bellhops carrying bags. One had her luggage in a cart, while the other was carrying paper bags. She must have gone shopping before coming over. I wonder who she is. My questions were answered by the hotel manager, who also walked into the suite. I turned off the vacuum and walked to the side of the room. Hotel Manager: “You, what’s your name?” I pointed at myself to confirm if he was talking to me. He nodded, so I said, “My name’s Jessica, sir.” Hotel Manager: “Miss Montaniel is Mr. Santillan’s girlfriend, and she’ll be staying in the suite with him. Mr. Santillan should be back later tonight. Finish cleaning up immediately.” Jessica: “Okay, sir.” Miss Montaniel gave instructions to the bellhops to put her luggage in the master’s bedroom. I put away the cleaning materials and my cart and got ready to leave the suite. I was actually done cleaning and was about to leave after vacuuming. The bellhops had left, and I was walking out of the suite when Miss Montaniel called me. Miss Montaniel: “You, maid, come here and unpack my luggage. Make sure to wash your hands. I don’t want my clothes to get dirty.” Jessica: “Y-yes, ma’am.” I left the cart outside the suite and walked towards the bedroom. Like Miss Montaniel asked, I washed my hands before handling her luggage. I’m sure my hands were already clean, but I didn’t want to give her any reason to be mad at me. After washing my hands, I went inside the walk-in closet and started unpacking Miss Montaniel’s luggage. Miss Montaniel has a Louis Vuitton luggage set and carry-on bags. I used to have bags Louis Vuitton bags, so I know that these are really expensive. I laid them down carefully and opened them slowly. I couldn’t help but be impressed with Miss Montaniel’s wardrobe. They are all name brands and expensive. I used to have an expensive wardrobe too, but I left most of them at home when I ran away. The ones I’ve brought have already been sold when I ran out of money. In fact, most of the belongings I brought when I left home have been sold whenever I needed to buy something for my son. I took the hangers from the closet and started hanging the clothes. I did it carefully because I couldn’t afford to pay for any of these clothes if something bad happened. After almost an hour, I was done. I put the luggage and bags away as well. I smiled as I looked at how well I did.  When I was younger, I loved organizing my closet too and making sure that everything was in its proper place. I got out of the closet and looked for Miss Montaniel, who I found sitting on the couch in the living area. I faced her with my head bowed and said, “I’m finished hanging your closet in the closet, ma’am. Do you need anything else before I go?” Miss Montaniel: “Yeah. I want some ice tea.” Jessica: "Of course, ma'am. I can order them for you. If you want to order anything else, you can call the reception desk. Miss Montaniel: “I know that, silly. I just had my nails done. I don’t want to mess them up by dialing.” Jessica: “Okay, ma’am. Would that be all?” Miss Montaniel looked up, and although I had my head down, part of my face was showing. I could also make out the expression on her face. She looked at me intently and said, “What’s your name again?” Jessica: “My name is Jessica, ma’am.” I noticed her face glowing up as she smiled and stood up. Miss Montaniel: “No way. Jessica? Is your last name Villadolid?” I got confused and looked up before saying, “Yes, ma’am. How did you know my last name?” Miss Montaniel: “Look at me. It’s Ashley. Ashley Montaniel from high school.” I looked at Miss Montaniel’s face and realized that she did look familiar, but a lot had changed on her face that I could barely recognize her. I’m not sure if she’s had them changed cosmetically or if they changed because she got older. When I realized that I was looking at my former friend and classmate who dropped out of school because of my bullying, I was frozen in place. I couldn’t say anything and just kept looking at Ashley. Ashley was grinning from ear to ear as she said, “Well, well, well. Look at how the mighty have fallen. The former campus queen is now a maid.” I bowed my head down once more and didn’t say anything. After a few seconds, I just said, “If there’s nothing else ma’am, I’ll be going. I’ll have the ice tea delivered shortly.” I could hear Ashley laughing as I walked out of the suite and made my way to the elevator. This would be a very long and challenging day.
