Chapter 6

2558 Words
A few days had passed since Raquelle had found out Drake was a werewolf. A part of Drake was still waiting for her to freak out and realize that she was hanging out with a creature you only heard about in books and movies. Most of him was happy that she knew though. He knew that he hadn't know her that long but he felt like he had known her forever. He felt like he could trust her. Drake was currently on his way to pick her up so they could go to school together. Since that day she found out his secret, he couldn't get her out of his mind. He remembered how long he had debated it within himself before finally shooting her a text. The smile on his face after she replied was bright enough to light up the dark. He liked her. He really liked her. He liked listening to her talk. Her voice was just so relaxing for him. He liked seeing her smile. He loved watching the way her lips curled and the way her hazel eyes seemed to glow a little every time something made her happy. Drake didn't want to admit it to himself because they hadn't known each other for the longest of times but he was done lying to himself. When Raquelle talked about having to walk to school the next morning because her mom was on night shift at work, it didn't take him long to offer to take her to school himself. It wasn't like it was any inconvenience to him plus he'd appreciate the extra time they would spend together before school. Raquelle seemed pleased with the idea. Their first drive together was pleasant. They spent it talking about each other. Although they had spent a whole week working on their project, they didn't really talk much about personal stuff. They had completed the project days early but neither wanted to stop hanging out with the other. Drake told her stories of the pack and Raquelle couldn't be happier to listen. She told him stories of her childhood and her former town. When they had arrived at school, neither of them got down from the car because they were too enthralled in their conversation. They of course got stares from the other students. They didn't care though and by lunch that day, the stares and whispers had died down. Raquelle's friends had even asked her why she was hanging with him if they had reportedly finished their project. After that first drive, it had become some sort of tradition and he had started picking her up everyday since then. Drake had even met her mother. She was a nice woman but she looked at him like she knew what he was. He talked to Raquelle about it but she said she didn't tell her mom anything and he believed her. Drake eventually shrugged it off as him just being paranoid. He pulled into Raquelle's driveway and she was already outside waiting for him with a smile. He rolled down the glass to smile at her. “Good morning", he greeted. “Good morning wolf man", she greeted as she went around to get in the front seat. “Ha ha very funny Myers", he said, “is your mom home?" “Yeah. She's asleep. You have no idea how much she appreciates the fact that she doesn't have to drive me to school anymore". “Well I'm glad to be of help. Seat belt on", Drake said as he started the car and made for school. “Are you ready?" Raquelle asked him. “For our presentation?" “Yeah". “I've never been readier". “Okay that's good because you're doing the public speaking". Drake took a quick glance at her to raise an eyebrow at her. Raquelle loved how he felt perfectly comfortable with her to not wear his sunglasses. She loved looking into his eyes. She could literally get lost in them. “Oh please, you've got this". Drake simply rolled his eyes. The rest of the ride continued in casual conversation until they arrived at school. “Thanks for the ride", Raquelle said. Drake sighed. “You realize you don't have to thank me every time right?" “Then how are you supposed to know how grateful I am?" Drake simply scoffed. He noticed that she was fumbling with the seatbelt and she was unable to undo it. “What is wrong with this thing?" she muttered to herself. Drake stretched from his seat over to her to help. They locked eyes and for a few seconds, they both did nothing but stare into each other's eyes. Drake stole a glance at her lips then moved his eyes back to her face. He thought of how wonderful it would be to kiss her in that moment. He blinked, remembering why he stretched over there in the first place and helped her undo the seatbelt buckle. “There you go", he said, his voice coming out in a breathy whisper. “Thanks", she replied. Drake could almost swear that he saw her also sneak a glance at his lips. He went back to his seat then as their moment was broken. They both got down from the car and walked inside the school together. After a few days of arriving together, nobody batted an eyelash at them anymore. Someone called Raquelle's name and she turned. It was Mia, a friend of hers. “I'll catch you later", she said. “Bye", he said, with a smile. He had fifteen minutes till his first class and he was feeling like quiet so he went to the empty classroom to wait. He plugged in his headphones and brought out his sketchbook. In a couple of seconds, he lost himself in the zone and only came out of it when he heard the bell ring. He took a moment to admire what he drew and he was stunned when he realized he had subconsciously been drawing Raquelle. Of course his pencil sketch wasn't enough to capture her beauty but anybody with working eyes could definitely tell that it was her. He didn't know what to make of that. He knew he liked her but subconsciously drawing from memory her seemed a little excessive to him. Either way, he was definitely going to complete the drawing. The teacher walked in and he had to put his stuff away. The rest of the day passed by quickly and soon it was lunch. As usual, Drake took his stuff to his table and he watched as Raquelle and her friends were talking and laughing. Once or twice, he wondered how it would feel like to be part of a group of friends like this but he quickly shook that idea out of his head. Raquelle looked back at him and smiled and he shot her a wink in response. That elicited a blush from her that she tried but failed to cover. Diane and Mia took that moment to trade her about him. Of course, that did nothing to help the blush disappear. “Do you guys mind if I ditch you for today?" Raquelle asked her friends. Drake's eyes perked at that. Where was she going? He got his answer when she picked up her tray and made her way to her table. He raised an eyebrow in question even though he was happy that she chose to sit with him. “You looked like you could use the company", she said in reply. Almost like she could read his mind. “Aren't your friends going to miss you though?" Drake asked as a mere formality. He couldn't care less if her friends missed her or not. “They can manage without me for one day besides, I'd much rather be here", Raquelle answered with a smile. Drake couldn't help but smile back. “For what it's worth, I'd rather you be here too". They spent the rest of lunch talking and laughing. “Hey, don't forget, Mason invited you for a playdate with his friends", Drake said. “How could I forget? It's been on my mind all day", Raquelle replied. “Right. Which is why you're making me present our project", Drake said, the sarcasm dripping off his tone. Raquelle pretended not to hear it. “Yep. You know for a werewolf, you're really smart". Drake couldn't help himself from laughing out loud at that. “I feel like I should be offended on behalf of all werewolves but I'll let it slide since you're keeping our secret". “Oh please, we both know you just can't get offended at me", she retorted, a smug smile on her face. Instead of a reply, Drake just looked at her with an indulging smile. “You're lucky you're so cute", he said under his breath. She didn't reply. A couple of minutes later, he felt eyes on his face and he looked up to find her staring at him. “Okay I know I'm gorgeous but you do realize that in most cultures it's considered rude to stare right?" he teased. She wasn't smiling though. “Are you ever going to enter the school without your sunglasses?" she asked. The smile on his face dropped. “I definitely wasn't expecting you to say that", he mumbled but she ignored it. “I don't think it's fair that you have to wear sunglasses all the damn time especially when you have the most beautiful pair of eyes ever", Raquelle said, taking his hand in hers. Drake couldn't help but smile at her compliment. He wanted to say something but she went on. “You shouldn't have to be uncomfortable just to make everyone else comfortable. I mean, it's not like you gave yourself silver eyes, you were born with it!!" Drake was amazed at the passion with which Raquelle was taking this topic. “And besides—" “Hey", Drake interjected, cutting her off, “I appreciate this, a whole lot. Seriously, you have no idea what it means to me to see someone that isn't related to me care so much but I've already gotten used to the sunglasses. Besides I'll take wearing them indoors everyday to people staring at me because they haven't seen a black boy with silver eyes before. Hell, nobody naturally has silver eyes so it would be weird no matter my skin tone". “If they stare, it will only be for a couple of days at most and then people will get used to it. It's just like us, the first time people saw us arriving together, they stared and gossiped but now look at us, nobody's batting an eyelash that we're having lunch together, besides since when did Drake Hart start caring what people thought about him?" Drake smirked at her. “How about this? If anyone even spares a glance in your direction, I'll give them my most menacing glare", Raquelle said and then proceeded to give him a demonstration. Instead of the desired reaction she was expecting which he assumed was supposed to fierce, he just found it adorable. She reminded him of an angry kitten. He couldn't help himself when he laughed. “I'm sorry Myers but you just look so damn adorable. I doubt your most menacing glare would do much to hurt anybody but I appreciate the thought behind it". Before Raquelle could reply, the bell rang. “We should head back to class. I'll walk you to yours, come on", Drake said, getting up. Raquelle just sat there, arms crossed around her chest and a pout on her face. “Ugh fine. I'll consider taking off my glasses", Drake said after an exaggerated eye roll. At that, Raquelle's features perked back up into the radiant smile that he loved seeing on her face. “That's all I wanted to hear", she said. He shook his head at her antics, offering her his hand. She took it and they walked to her next class together. Neither of them even realized that they were holding hands. It seemed so natural to them, almost second nature. They stopped in front of her next class. “I'll see you last period. Don't be late", he told her. “I'm never late. See ya", she said as she entered the class. Once she was in, Drake sprinted so as not to be late to his class since it was on the other side of the school. He didn't mind the extra exercise though, since it meant a couple extra minutes with Raquelle. The rest of day went by and soon it was the last class of the day and time to turn in their project. Like she said, Raquelle arrived early. The teacher was late and most of the class was rowdy. It seemed a lot of people were unable to get their projects done. She and Drake were basically the only ones who were chill. Eventually, he did show up and soon, various partners went and showed off their work. Seeing the way Mr Howard was quick to tear down the projects, made the confidence Raquelle had take a nose dive. Even the projects that she thought were good were given a bad grade by him. Drake noticed how tense she was. He wasn't worried. He was used to how Mr Howard worked. He took Raquelle's hand in his and gave it a soft squeeze. “It's okay. We've got this", he whispered to her. Those words of reassurance were enough to calm her down a little. It seemed like the time flew because soon it was their turn. “Remember, we've got this. Deep breaths", Drake told her. She did as he said and they took the stage. She stood beside the project as Drake started the presentation. Her heart was in her throat as she tried to gauge the reaction on Mr Howard's face but he gave the same stoic expression he had given the others. She was able to keep up with the showing as Drake told but she was super nervous. Eventually, Drake finished and the whole class applauded. Raquelle waited until finally, Mr Howard smiled. “That was an excellent presentation", he said, “Mr Hart, Miss Myers, you both get an A". In excitement, Raquelle jumped into Drake's arms. After everything she had seen, she thought they'd get a C at best but she was glad their hard work paid off. Drake was surprised at first but wasted no time in hugging her back. He knew they'd pass but her excitement was contagious and he couldn't help himself. They had both forgotten where they were until Mr Howard cleared his throat. Raquelle disentangled herself from him, her face a shade of tomato red. They both headed to their seats as the entire class laughed. Mr Howard called for decorum in the classroom. “Next is..." “This totally calls for celebration", Raquelle whispered to Drake. He didn't see what the big deal was but he wasn't about to turn down extra alone time with her. “What did you have in mind?" he whispered back. “Ice cream. After school", she replied. He liked the sound of that. “It's a date".
