Frida
"Who's there?" My mom asks, moving closer to the door.
I quickly turn around and close the door before she reaches.
"Uhmm, I think they got the wrong address" I say.
"Wrong address?, That's not true, if they are here for a laundry ser..."
"That's not what they are here for, trust me" I say.
"Ok, if you say so" she says and turns to leave but then another knock came one the door.
"Ok, now I'm sure it's not the wrong address" she says and tries to open the door.
"No, no, no, it is..."
She pushed me away and opened the door and there they were, still standing.
My mom quickly tries to straighten up her hair and look a bit presentable.
"How can I help you my good sirs?" She asks in a voice I never knew she possesses, so soft and calming.
"Is this Miss Frida Henry's house?" He asks in that automated voice of his.
"Yes, and I'm her mother, is anything wrong?" She asks, sounding pissed, like her real self now.
"Congratulations ma'am, your daughter has been given admission to the prestigious imperial academy" he says.
"See mom, it is just a prank" I try to pull her away from them but she has already collected the envelope that was with them.
She is currently trying to rip it out.
In no time, she was reading the white paper. The white paper that holds bad news for me.
"Is this like, for real?" She asks, excited.
"Yes ma'am and she is expected to join latest this Monday" he answers.
"No I won't" I say.
"Just ignore her Sir, she definitely will be joining you guys" her mom says.
"Ok, we'll be on our way" the man answers and then turns to leave, the others following suite.
Just then, my father comes to the door as well.
My siblings have not woken up yet as it is the end of the week and so, they are sleeping in because there's no school.
"What's going on here?" My father asks.
"Look, my daughter has finally managed to bring honor to our family, she has been accepted into a rich school" she says, waving the paper at his face.
He quickly snatches it and starts to read.
"Oh my goodness! I'm so proud of you" he says, pulling me into a hug.
I had to struggle to pull myself away and breath properly.
I walked away from the corridor and into the living room.
Taking a seat, I can still see them jubilating and holding the paper like some piece of jewelry.
"I am not going to attend that school" I announce once again.
"What!" They both shout at the same time.
Like a flash of light, my mother was standing at the top of my head.
"Now listen to me young lady, you are going to attend that school and that's finally" she announces.
Yeah, whatever but I don't think I can and I won't.
"Dear, why are you saying such thing, this is a great opportunity for you and you should grab it and not waste it like that" my father says, moving closer.
"Dad, how can you tell me to attend a school where they try to kill someone and no one doesn't seem to care?" I ask.
"Well, it's better that you attend that school than stay at home doing nothing, it's almost a year since you were sent back home for school fees and your mates are almost about to get promoted while you are here freeloading, you should even be grateful for this opportunity" my mom cuts in.
Ouch! That was hurtful.
"My dear listen to your mother, she is right, you need education to be successful in this life and what better opportunity for you need than this?" My father asks softly.
He is always the sensible one around.
"Yes, listen to him, otherwise you'll end up as useless as him" she chimes in again.
Gosh! This woman never misses an opportunity to humiliate my father. I know he hasn't gotten the opportunity to finish college but for goodness sake, the old woman graduated school since high school.
"Mom!" I try to reprimand her.
"Let it be my dear" my father stops me.
He has always been so silent whenever she utters all this rubbish.
"Just reconsider my dear" he pleads.
I look up to my mother and she gave me one of that scary looks she posses.
"Ok, I'll think about it" I say.
"You better" she says and walks back to the kitchen.
My father pats me on the shoulder and gave me a reassuring look.
I followed her into the kitchen to help her out with dinner, my siblings will soon be up and they will start whining if dinner's not ready.
