ALEX:
The next morning, I changed into my training clothes. My top is a loose camisole, and my pants are oversize too, to make it more comfortable. I, Claudia, and Meredith train twice daily, one at 6 a.m. and another at 10 a.m.
We train with Hector, our beta, during our 6 a.m. schedule. This is to improve our stamina and endurance. We do the second one together with the other teenage members of the pack. The training usually lasts an hour and everyone must be present.
The older pack members, or those who have already shifted, have their training much earlier, at 4:30 a.m. This is to make way for them to get to their work on time, as well as to give them the necessary skills to defend themselves and the pack.
Our pack doesn't have our own warriors. We are not expecting any wars. However, we choose to be cautious, and every pack member must be able to learn how to fight. Papa wanted to build warriors that could protect us before, but since we moved here to Las Filipinas, there was no need as we are islands apart from other packs. Plus, Papa is the Gobernador here, so that helps as well.
Mama was the one who felt the need to train everyone, instead of selecting pack members to be warriors. According to her, that would give them an equal opportunity to defend themselves and survive. Mostly, the fights here are between us and the rebel Indios who want to be free from España's colony. This has become quite frequent nowadays, so the need for training has also become a priority.
Hector, our beta, has contacted his friend from España, not just to visit us, but to help us train. He is one of their pack's best warriors, and Papa is hoping he can help us become better fighters. The one-year intensive training plan has become a permanent fixture in our pack. I really hope this goes well.
"Niñas and niño, buenos dias, vamonos! Training positions," Hector ordered with a thunderous voice.
Miguel and Isabelle are wearing matching training outfits, white camisoles and loose red pants. They are adorable to watch, especially Isabelle.
"Alex! Where have you been? We will do a sparring session with Meredith. Isabelle and Alex will spar with Claudia, while Miguel will spar with me. Comprende?"
Oh, how I wish I was paired up with Isabelle. Those cute smiles that she does and those brown hazelnut eyes. I could be lost in them.
I was still thinking of the lady when I felt a punch land on my ribs. It snapped me out of my daydream.
"Lex, what's happening to you?" Claud asked, with a worried look.
"It's nothing. Let's just continue. I don't want to get into trouble with your papa," I said, still fixated on Isabelle. I know Miguel should be my mate, and Isabelle is mated to Jaime. However, I just could not get myself to shake off this attraction. Something is not right. It's like there is a force pulling me towards her and not him.
"Okay. Switch partners, niñas."
Whew! After a few punches and kicks with Claud, I felt exhausted. Now I need to regain my energy. I could not get myself beaten down by Isabelle. I want to impress her with my skills.
"So chica, you are my brother's mate? Do you think you could defend him once the time comes?" she asked, as if gauging me if I would be taunted and strike first. If I didn't know better, then yeah, I would have charged towards her. But then, I know that I need to be careful with my next steps. We circled each other for another five minutes. Neither one wanted to go first.
"Chica, huh? Is that how you were taught to speak with other people?" I hope this gets on her nerves. Another three seconds, and she began advancing, making her first punch towards me. However, it did not connect. I was able to dodge her fist, and throw a jab into her ribs, which were wide open. She coughed a bit and then kicked me, but I deflected it.
I lounged at her using my left hand, and then when she tried to punch me at the side again, I switched mid air into a flying kick. She was able to deflect my kick. We were evenly matched as we tried to learn each other's moves. This went on for ten minutes.
"Alright, that's enough for today. Let's cool down with a two kilometer run. " Hector said, while panting from his sparring with Miguel. I guess the twins are well trained by their papa.
"Si!" we shouted in unison, and started to jog along the pack borders.
"So, Lex. How did you manage to train at that level of skill? Hector seems a bit lacking in terms of teaching strategy, " Isabelle quipped.
"Ever since I was Meredith's age, Mama would teach me some of her fighting skills that she learned from her old pack. She would gather the three of us at the beach every afternoon. Bea was still a toddler back then, and she thought we were just playing."
"Hmm... That's interesting. I didn't know your mama was a skilled luna. Our luna has never been a fighter, but more of a mother to everyone. I guess you are lucky to have her." This is often the case because lunas aren't expected to fight or become warriors. Girls and women aren't encouraged to train. But Mama's father, being an alpha, wanted his daughter to have a fighting chance in case of attack. I am so glad he did this.
Mama then helped our pack to have every girl and woman attend the training, making every pack member an equal on the battlefield.
"Alex, sweetie, please come back to the pack house immediately," Papa said through our mind link.
I excused myself from the rest of them and rushed to the pack house.
