Chapter 7: Alpha who?!

1459 Words
ALEX: I walked towards Papa's office without changing my clothes. I was sweating excessively from the sparring session we had. I have this lingering uneasiness in my head. I knocked on the door and waited for the other person to let me come in. Naturally, as the next alpha, I am allowed to walk into the office at anytime. However, I have never done that out of respect for the elderly. "Come on, sweetie." My Papa's voice sounded irritated. Something was really amiss now. "You wanted to talk to me, Alpha?" As this is the Alpha's office, we are obliged to use the pack positions and not the familial bonds. This is not just to pay respect to the elders, but also to protect us in case some visitors have ill intentions. "Yes, may I have your opinion on the matter at hand? As you know, during our dinner yesterday, our visitors found their mates. In this case, two of the future high-ranking members have been claimed as their mates. This is mainly about you since you are the future Alpha and Luna of this pack." He paused a bit before continuing with a hoarse voice. In the tradition, one male heir is allowed to be the pack’s alpha, and in the absence of such, anyone may contest for the position. Our pack doesn't have any male heirs, but I have already decided that you will be the next alpha after me." He paused again. This time I could see his eyes, teary eyed. "Alpha, may I know the reason for this meeting? I know Beta and Gamma are present today, but there is also an elderly person here. What is wrong, Señor?" I was still trying my best to grasp the situation, as this doesn’t usually happen in our pack. For the last dozen generations, our family has served as this pack's Alpha and we have never encountered any objections or challengers before. But then again, never before has there been a female alpha. During my grandfather's time, the eldest child was a female and then the second was a male, so the alpha position was then given to the male child while the eldest became the beta female and her mate as the beta. This rule has been made to ensure that the alpha’s bloodline remains in control of this pack. My situation right now is unique, as it seems, as well as a sign of weakness for our pack. Without a male heir, we are like deers in open-season deer-hunting. Anyone can come and claim our pack as their own. "Roberto and his family were supposed to be our guests. He was invited here to train our pack members, as he is the top warrior of the Black Moon Pack, one of the biggest packs in España." Again, he paused, but this time the Beta continued his explanation. "Roberto is aware of our situation and has agreed to do one-on-one training with you to help you defend your claim to our pack. This, however, alerted the Opal Pack, and they sent their heir towards our land. They are expected to arrive three months from now, and have already sent a letter in advance to inform us of their intentions. Alpha Vicente, being the Gobernador of the island, has the privilege of knowing this matters, but as the alpha, he could not do anything to prevent this. He can only delay this for a couple of weeks at the most." Beta Hector stood up and went to the tray to get a cigar. I guess this helps him calm his nerves. "We initially planned for you to be trained a year ago, but due to some complications, it was moved." Roberto paused again, this time to get a sniff of his cigar. "We have a rare opportunity on our hands as Miguel has identified you as his mate. If you and he agree to our plan, then maybe we can avert a potential war between us and the Opal Pack. Miguel is the top warrior of the Black Moon Pack next to his papa. He is also a descendant of an alpha two generations ago. His grandfather was the youngest of the siblings; thus, no rank had been given to him, but he held a high position in their pack. " The Beta looked at the Alpha, signaling that he was done with his part. "Alex, what Hector is saying is that you can still be the Alpha and Luna, but only if Miguel challenges you to a duel and you successfully defeat him. Or... you may accept him as your mate when you turn sixteen in the next two months, and wait for the Opal's heir to challenge you. As you know by now, any duel for the alpha title is a duel to death, or until one of the parties submits. In your case, we could set up a duel between you and Miguel until one of you submits, or you will wait to duel the challenger of another pack and fight to death. " The elder coughed before turning to my papa. "Alpha, if I may add... this is still a theory, but the challenger may reject the submission if they discover Alex and Miguel are mates." He was oblivious while saying this. It is as if he is thinking and calculating the possible outcomes of our situation. "Another option we have is to give the Alpha title to Miguel, as he is Alex’s mate, and Alex will be the Luna. Since he has Alpha Blood, this will be accepted by our pack members, and we can send a letter to the Opal Pack stating that a new Alpha has been named. This option is the least dangerous, as well as the least favorable for your daughter." The elder then turned to me. "As the appointed heir, I would like to get your opinion on this. " Alpha's face had become sullen, and I could no longer see my papa as his eyes changed to black. This means his wolf is taking control of this situation. I must tread carefully or we could all be in danger. "Alpha, as you have said, we still have three months before the challenger arrives, and my birthday is in two months. I would like to take on this challenger instead of losing my mate or my rank for that matter. I know I am putting everyone's safety on the line with my decision, but I could not continue living with the pack as a luna if they saw me run at the first sight of danger. I am willing to defend this pack with my life and will train harder if that is the last thing I can do to save our pack!" I shouted the last part with all my heart, as I could no longer contain my emotions. Since I was a child, I was taught how to become an Alpha and a good leader. Mama would always remind me that cowardice is the absence of courage when facing your fears. "Very well, then it is settled. Beta, starting tomorrow, you will see to it that Alex will train with Roberto every morning and afternoon. This means she will have 6 o'clock in the morning, 10 o'clock in the morning, and 4 o'clock in the afternoon training. Also, please prepare the training grounds. Our pack members must be informed about this development," Alpha said this proudly. His wolf was no longer in charge, and I could tell he was pleased with my decision. "Si, Alpha," both beta and gamma said. The three exited the office, leaving me and Papa alone. "Niña, I am so proud of you for taking your pack into your own. I have no doubt that you will be victorious, as you have my strength and your mama's wit." A tear ran down Papa's face as he stepped nearer to his chair. "Oh, Papa! Thank you. I will protect our family, not just you and Mama, but all of our pack members. Will you help me train as well, not physically but mentally? Because I know the best offense is defense, and in this case, I must know all the strengths and weaknesses of my opponent." "Si, sweetie. I will do my best to get all the information we need. Thank you again, Mija. You are a blessing to us. " We hugged each other after he said this. I was afraid deep down, but I know that my family needs me now. They have given me all their love and support all these years, and now it's time for me to show them how much I love them.
