CHAPTER 4

ARIA “How could it be that he was my mate?” I asked myself later that night, but no answer came. I mean, I had just been rejected and my father and stepmother had pushed me to another man. I didn’t expect the man, my new husband; Xavier Darkwood, to be that handsome or young, much less, be mine. “Why are you here?” I heard someone ask behind me and I jerked my head to look at Xavier. He had just stepped out of the bathroom, and he had a towel wrapped around his waist. There was water dripping down his lean body, and the towel was leaning down dangerously down his torso. I swallowed as I looked up at him. My mouth seemed to be beeping glued together because I couldn’t seem to find my words. When I finally did, what I said was. “Excuse me, you shouldn’t be in here.” I mean, this was his house, and he could be anywhere, but not in my room. But there was a problem with this picture. This right here, dripping all over the floor in the expensive carpet like he didn’t care about it, in the room the housekeeper had shown to me. Xavier looked at me like I might have lost my head, and then he said. “No way, this is my room, Aria. You must be mistaken.” He said. “What?” I jumped off the bed, my face burning in embarrassment as I looked at him. I should have known that this wasn’t my room when I entered and saw the size of the bed, the interior of the room, all in dark colors. The luxury of the furnishings and the grandness of the space should have been a dead giveaway from the moment I stepped inside. A wave of humiliation washed over me, and the realization came crashing down against me like a tidal wave. Of course, this wasn’t my room. I was a guest here; well, maybe not a guest, but a new person at this house, so I shouldn’t have expected that this room would be mine. “Sorry about this. I didn’t know what I was thinking, believing this could be my room.” I said, licking my lip dry. I saw Xavier’s eyes move down to my lip for a moment, before he looked up at me. I saw something enter his eyes, it was so barely there I could have been mistaken though, and I couldn’t even tell what it might be. “I suppose you were thinking you would be my wife in every sense of the word, so you thought to present yourself before I ask for you.” He said, and I frowned. What was he talking about? I would have rolled my eyes, but I didn’t have the guts. I just made an honest mistake though, so there was no point doing this to me. When he smiled, I could tell he was just teasing me. “How about you crawl into the bed with your clothes off while you’re at it?” he asked with the corner of his mouth lifted in a smirk and I grunted lowly in my throat. As Xavier continued to tease me about my blunder, I felt a knot form in the pit of my stomach, and I wanted the ground to open up and just about swallow me. “Well, I’m glad you could have a laugh at my expense,” I muttered, unable to meet his gaze. I couldn’t even believe I had just said that though. To my new husband and Alpha. He was not only an Alpha to a very fearsome pack, but he was fearsome himself. I was in for it… My thoughts trailed off when he did something I wasn’t expecting him to do at all. He laughed, throwing his head back. His laughter rang out, mingling with the sound of my racing heartbeat. I bunched the edge of the white wedding dress I was still wearing, and looked away from him. When he was done laughing, I raised my head back to look at him. Xavier’s playful demeanor faltered slightly as he observed my discomfort. “You should have just asked Dana if you didn’t really catch the drift of where your room is.” He said and I nodded. “Yes, I should have.” I big my lower lip, allowing it to get stuck between my teeth, then I licked it before releasing it. “I see you do that a lot?” I heard Xavier ask, and my eyes found his, again. “Do what?” I asked. “Worry your lip between your teeth. I could do it for you if you want?” he said and I swallowed. “I don’t want that, thank you very much.” Weird ass man, offering silly things to unsuspecting females like myself. He must think I was going to jump at him doing that for… wait, what in the world does that even mean? “Are you sure, because you sure look like you need help…” he paused to look at my mouth, then he said. “My help. That’s what you look like you need.” “That’s so nice of you, but I don’t need your help.” I repeated, rolling my eyes at him, mentally. I didn’t dare do that for him to see. He might be my husband, but I just met him today, and I wasn’t sure of how he did things, or how he might take that. With a flicker of mischief in his eyes, he toyed with the edge of his towel, a silent challenge hanging between us. “Do you want to see me naked? Is that why you’re still standing there?” he asked, his voice laced with a hint of intrigue. Gasping at his audacity, I felt a flush spread across my cheeks, the heat of embarrassment mingling with an unfamiliar warmth. Unable to bear the intensity of his gaze, I turned away, my pulse pounding in my ears. “I-I apologize for my mistake again,” I stammered, my voice barely above a whisper, before hastily retreating from the room. As I walked out, I heard his laughter ringing out and echoing in my wake.
