Chapter : 11. Saving the wild..

2231 Words
I was about to go away to warn my friends about this huge dangerous wolf that's lurking in the forest, in search of raw meat. But just as I took a step back, the painful cry from it made me feel bad about it. If it's fallen on the ground and whining, except of hunting, then there must be something seriously wrong with it. Maybe it's way too hurt to move. I couldn’t think of what to do. Going near it means putting myself in danger. But I can’t leave a unique animal of wild in the face of death. Someone have to help it. Someone have to take this risk and save our world’s wonders. With this decision, I turned around towards it again. My body is still behind the tree, hidden from his eyes. That wolf is facing the other way, doing something behind which I can’t see from where I am standing. I have to go in front of it to see what is wrong with it in the first place. So I decided to go in. Keeping my breath in hold, I started taking slow steps towards it. Once I came out of the shadow of the tree, I made my steps go even more quiet. I don’t want it to realize my presence before I can check what kind of trouble he is in. I have to know even if it’s in trouble or not. I was taking slow steps as quiet as possible. I even made almost near it, when out of nowhere a dried twig came under my feet, making the loudest crunching noise is this entire silent forest. My heart beat stopped as I realized that this brown wolf now knows about my presence. At first, it pulled his head up from whatever it was doing on the ground. And like a lightning, its head snapped towards me. My soul almost left my body when the pair of the deepest red eyes caught mins. It was so red in color that it almost seemed like there was a fire of anger burning inside of it. I was completely lost in those horrific eyes, frozen in my place, and didn’t notice the snarling face it was making for me. But when I did, seeing the canine teeth of it, which is bigger than a lion probably. I lost the strength of my feet as it started shaking in fear from the growling noise it was making. I’m feeling like I am going to fall to the ground at any moment. Maybe that is because I know there is no match between it and me. There is no doubt that it’s going to eat me up now. I fell down on the ground as well, as I was fearing. This wolf was sitting or laying on the ground till now. But seeing me there, he slowly got up from its place. I was right. It is bigger than a horse. Seeing my death in front, I lost my balance and fell to the ground with my eyes closed. Racing with it is only a waste of time. So, except for trying to run, I kept my eyes closed and waited for it to eat me. In the next moment, I heard a heavy footstep fall closer to me and I know that this carnivorous animal is making its way to me. But with the next sound of a footstep, a whining sound also made me open my eyes. So it is truly hurt. Opening my eyes, I saw that enormous wolf standing right in front of me. One more step and it will be over my head. But something was stopping it to come closer to me and that is what hurting it as well. I bent my body a little to see what is keeping it holding back and saw that the hind leg of this wolf is stuck with something. Something with metal and chain. Did someone tie it up with a chain? But that is impossible. There is no one brave enough to tie this kind of an animal by its leg. And how can anyone come to this place anyway? Then what actually happend to it? “Look. I don’t know if you understand me or not, but I am still trying to talk to you, okay? I know you are hurt and couldn’t get out of the mess you are in. You need help. And you and me both know that no one is coming to help you in this place. So, let me help you or both of us die with no profit. I promise that I don’t mean you any harm. Let me help you and I will be gone with the secret of your existence. I promise. Just let me check you once.” That wolf was looking back at its feet with the hope of opening it by only staring at it. But when I started talking to it, it looked at me like it is truly understanding my words. Even the snarling face of it’s is gone and it becomes a quite innocent wolf. Maybe it understood that I am trying to help. This is my chance. I think it’s time to check if it truly understood me. So, I slowly got up from the ground as it kept its eyes on me. With trust in my heart, I took my first step towards it. But just as I came one step closer to it, the wolf started snarling at me again. “I am only trying to help you. If I can’t see the problem, how am I going to solve it. And for that, you have to allow me to go near you and maybe touch you if necessary. Trust me. I won’t do anything that will harm you in any way. Besides, what a small girl like me can do anything to a majestic creature like you. You can eat me up in one bite if you see something wrong. So, I am going to ask you this one time before leaving you in the middle of this forest with no hope of another help. Do you trust me?” I asked it question with the hope that he can truly understand me. It didn’t give me any reply in return or any nod. But the way he stopped snarling at me and put its head down, I understood that he is allowing me to go near him. “Okay. So, I am going to take this as a yes. Please don’t eat me up.” With a deep breath, I started taking slow steps towards it. This time it didn’t do anything to scare me except of keep staring at me with its red eyes. Soon I came close to it and walked past beside it to see what is keeping his leg tied up. But what I saw the source of its pain, I felt my own eyes tearing up. Someone had the opacity to set a bear trap in the middle of the forest, where hunting and killing bears are completely restricted. And with a bad luck, this innocent wolf got stuck in it. Its hind leg is fallen on the trap and now it’s cutting its flesh, drawing blood out from there. And on top of it, the metal jaw of the trap has gotten moist and rusty by staying out in the open for a long time. This is surely going to give this wolf infection. “Oh no. Your leg has gotten stuck in a bear trap. It’s really bad for you. I have to open it somehow before it breaks your bone. But I don’t know how to do it. I am so sorry that you got in this mess for some i***t human like us. I will try my best to free you. Be patience, okay..” I wanted to rub its fur to console it, but I am not sure how he will react to it. So I chose to hold back. And yeah. It’s a he. I just found out once I noticed it..! You know what I mean.. I don’t know how to open it. I have never seen a bear trap in real life, let alone how to use them. So, I did what I came to my mind first. Holding the jaw of the trap, I started pulling them apart, so that the grip of it gets loose and the wolf can pull its leg out. But I didn’t know that it would hurt him more. As I used my strength to pull it open, something happend to its leg, which made blood ooze out more, along with its anger. I saw my entire life flash in front of my eyes the moment it attacked me and went to bite my head off. I was waiting for the sting of pain I am going to feel before my death, but it never came. Instead, I felt it taking a big whiff of my head. Did he just sniff me before killing me? Is he trying to check if I am digestible before eating me? A lick on my face made me open my eyes. I became shocked by this wolfs sudden actions. I opened my eyes to see it’s face really close to mine. The red eyes I was fearing till now, is gone. Instead, there are two deep black orbs looking at me with a shine in them. What is wrong with this animal? Why is it acting so weird? Just a moment ago, it was about to eat me and now he is petting me. Is this the way he is trying to tell me that he made a mistake and he won’t attack me again? Maybe yes.. “I don’t know what you are trying to do, but I am taking it as a sorry. I please to you as well. I didn’t know that it will hurt you this much. I will try to find another way to get you out of this trap. Please stay still this time.” This time it looked at me with some unknown emotion that is impossible for us human to understand. Taking my minds off of these silly thoughts, I started finding another way to release him. Maybe if I break the chain, it will become easier to open. With this thought, I started searching for a place to break it from. Unfortunately, this chain was made out of strong and unbreakable chain. Whoever set this trap, they made sure that the bear can’t escape from it anyway. After searching for a while, I noticed that the end of the chain was dug into the mud. If I use my whole strength, I might pull it out from there. That is the only way I can see to break the trap. According to my thought, I used all the strength I have, and I succeeded in pulling it out of the ground. I became happy to succeed in one thing. Now all I have to do is release his leg from the jaw. I noticed that the end of the chain was a long metal bar. It’s strong enough to help me open the jaw. Maybe I can use it to open it too. “I am sorry to say this, but it’s going to hurt you a bit. No matter what happens, stand still okay.” I said it to him one last time, before putting the metal bar in between the jaw. Taking a deep breath, I used my entire strength to open it by using the bar. But unfortunately, it didn’t open. Instead, it hurt his leg more and as a result, he started running. I don’t know if he thought he was released or what, but he started running as fast as he can without looking back. On the other side, I was still holding the chain, and somehow my own foot got tangled with the chain. And as a result, as fast as he was running, I ended up getting dragged behind. My fleshes were getting ripped by the stones of the ground and I was screaming using all the air of lungs to make him stop. But how can a wild animal understand that? He kept running and running, dragging me behind, until the edge of the river. I thought maybe this is it. Maybe now he is going to stop. But I was completely wrong. Except for stopping, the giant wolf chose to jump on the river along with me behind. In the mid air, my leg got free from the chain. But it was too late by then. Maybe god was planning my death in water. Maybe that is why I never learned how to swim and came near a river to camp. Maybe this is how my life is going to end. With these thoughts on head, I fell into the river and slowly started drowning in it. I was already out of breath from all the screaming, and the water was forbidding me from taking any. I was getting choked under water. I saw light flash in front of my eyes, before everything becoming completely dark. Maybe the story of my life was destined to end like this..
