After work, as we were heading back to the house, Caeleb asked me to pull over.
“What’s up, Caeleb?”
“Ok, so the dream I had last night.”
“What about it?”
“I think it’s safe now to tell you that I know the voice I heard.”
“Ok, who was it?”
“It was your voice, Skyla. I’m not going to say what you were saying to me but it was you who was talking to me.”
“Why didn’t you tell me that when I told you about mine?”
“I didn’t want to chance anyone overhearing me and thinking I am trying to get with the boss's sister.”
“So what if you were? I am almost 18 and no one has the right to say anything.”
“Skyla, I don’t want to lose my job.”
“So what I just heard was you not denying you wanting to get with me.”
“I-uh-I.”
“Relax Caeleb, I'm joking with you. I’m sure I’m not the kind of girl you like anyway.”
“I never told you what my taste in women was so how do you know you are what I like?”
“Well? Am I the kind of girl you want?”
“I’m not going to answer that. You wouldn’t tell me who the guy was that you kind of liked so why should I tell you if you are the same kind of woman I am looking for?”
He raised his brow at me and I smacked myself on the forehead.
“I don’t think I should tell you who he is. You might say something about it.”
“As long as you don’t say it’s Sal, I’m good.”
“Ew that is nasty. Sal is like 50.”
“I’m glad it isn’t Sal. So if it isn't him and I already know how you feel about the rest of the guys in the field. How do you put it? Oh yeah they are f*cktards and I don’t know anyone around this town for me to say something to you, that leaves one person.”
He gave me a knowing look and I blushed.
“I’m flattered Skyla, but your brother would more than likely kill me.”
“Aaron doesn’t care about me! He is a jerk and only cares about himself and the money he makes from our parents' company.”
“Skyla, I may have a bad boy past, and even though we have known each other for only a few days, I have more respect for you than you think. I am not going to disrespect you by hooking up with you. When you turn 18, if you want to try going on a date then I have no objections.”
“I said I might be into you. I never said I was into you.”
“I-I-I. sh*t I’m sorry. I just assumed because you said you might be into me that you were. Now I feel like a jackass for opening my mouth.”
“Now you see why I said I wasn't sure if I should tell you? I knew you would more than likely say something like that. I find you very attractive, Caeleb but I don’t know if I’d be into dating you.”
“Why not, Skyla?”
“You have been nice to me so far, Caeleb but I feel there is another side of you that might be dangerous. I don’t know if I want dangerous”
“You won’t know until you live a little, Skyla.”
In my head, I was getting giddy. I think I’m playing this whole I’m not sure if I’m into you thing, off pretty good. He is now without actually saying the words, saying he wants me to date him to see if I’m into danger. Maybe if I keep this up I can get him to open up and admit he likes me.
I told Caeleb I needed to get back to the house before Aaron came looking for his cart and he nodded. I could tell while I was driving to the house me saying what I said was affecting him. When we got to the house, Caeleb walked to the driver's side door of his truck but before he got in he said my name.
“Yes, Caeleb?”
“I’m sorry for assuming earlier. I would like you to get to know me better. I am not as dangerous as you think.”
“I guess I can’t assume things either then can I?”
“Will I see you tomorrow, Skyla?”
“Yep bright and early. Have a good night Caeleb.”
I turned and walked up to the door. I could see his reflection in the window and he was standing there watching me. I smiled and opened the door.
“Skyla.”
I ignored Aaron and kept walking.
“Skyla!”
I made it to my bedroom and shut the door. I wasn’t joking when I said I wasn’t talking to him. I am still mad about what he said and until I cool off I don’t even want to hear an apology right now.
