“Skyla, if you ever need someone to talk to I’m here for you.”
Caeleb says as I am grabbing the door handle to get out of his truck.
“Thank you. I’m sorry again for getting mascara on your shirt.”
“No big deal. You got it out. See you tomorrow.”
I got out of his truck and walked down the road toward the house. I asked Caeleb to drop me off here so Aaron wouldn’t see me with him if he was still up or even home. As soon as I walked in the door.
“Where have you been? Your brother has been worried about you!”
“Not now Jenna!”
“He has been pacing in our room, worried sick.”
“HA, that's bullsh*t and you know it! Aaron could care less where I was. Ha ha! He didn’t have to agree to keep me but did because of this house. If he didn’t even really want to take care of me why would he care where I was?”
“He-uh-uh. Wait what are you talking about, Skyla?”
“He told me this morning I needed to show him more gratitude because he didn’t have to agree to take care of me and I could be in a foster home instead. Who the f*ck says that to their only living family?”
“Skyla, I am sorry he said that to you.”
“It’s ok but until he apologizes to me for treating me like crap and saying hurtful things to me, I’m not speaking to him. I will be working in the field and I will come home after work when I am ready to.”
“I’ll talk to him, Skyla.”
I walked off and went to my room. I could hear Jenna screaming at Aaron for what he said to me. I hope she leaves him. He is a jerk to me and to her. I went into the bathroom and turned the shower on. I stood there staring at myself until the mirror fogged up. I undressed and got in. I put my head under the water and just stood there. Not much longer and I will be out of here. When I got out they were still yelling at each other. I put my pajamas on and climbed into bed. I grabbed my headphones and put them in my ears. I hit play on my playlist on my phone and laid back. Caeleb kept popping into my mind. Seeing him without a shirt on made me tingle. I hope he didn’t notice me squeezing my legs together. Whatever he has in his background must not be that bad. He seems like a respectful guy and so far hasn’t done anything to give me a bad vibe. I closed my eyes and tried to go to sleep but it wasn’t working. I laid there staring at the ceiling. I took my headphones out to see if Aaron and Jenna were still arguing but it was quiet. I paused my playlist and locked my phone. I lay there enjoying the silence until I fell asleep.
“Skyla.”
“Huh? Who said that?”
“Skyla, come with me.”
“What the hell is going on? Who are you?”
“I found a good place for us to sit and talk.”
“Caeleb? Where are you?”
I couldn’t see him but I felt my hand being grabbed and when I looked forward no one was there.
“Caeleb? Where are you?”
I heard a loud noise and I turned my head. I saw a bright light. I closed my eyes afraid of what was about to happen and when I opened my eyes, I see that I was still in my bed and the loud noise was my alarm going off. I sighed and got up. I got dressed and headed down to grab something to eat before going to the field. Aaron wasn’t up and I was thankful I didn’t have to deal with him this morning. I headed out the door and like clockwork, Caeleb was pulling up. We headed to the field. Caeleb seemed a little off this morning but I didn’t want to pry into his business so I kept my questions to myself. At lunch, I asked if he wanted to come with me and he shook his head.
“Ok, what is up with you today? You haven’t said a word to me and since you started here you’ve been nothing but nice and friendly.”
“Sorry. Just had a weird night.”
“You aren’t the only one.”
“What happened to you?”
“Oh no. Tell me about your night first, Caeleb and maybe I’ll tell you what happened to me.”
Caeleb looked at me funny but then gave me a small smile.
“I had a weird dream. I don’t know how to explain what it was about because there wasn’t anyone else in it. I could only hear someone talking to me.”
I raised my brow in confusion.
“What in the hell is going on?”
I said to myself but I obviously said it louder than I meant to.
“What do you mean what’s going on?”
“I had a dream like that last night as well. I could see around me and hear someone talking to me, no one else was there though.”
“Did you figure out who it was talking to you?”
I nodded unsure if I wanted to tell him that it was him.
“Did you know them or was it some random person?”
I bit my lip and looked down at the ground.
“I guess you could say I don’t know this person that well. We just met not long ago.”
I looked up to see if it figured out that I was talking about him and when my eyes locked on his,
“Skyla, it was me wasn’t it?”
I nodded and looked back at the ground.
“Skyla, Come with me. I found us a good place to sit and talk.”
“Oh, my god. That’s exactly what you said in my dream.”
“What?”
“Caeleb, in my dream, you said to come with you and that you found us a good place to sit and talk.”
“That’s weird.”
“No sh*t Sherlock!”
I followed Caeleb down one of the paths through the field and we came to a single tree. The tree has been there for at least a hundred years. I used to play here when I was a kid while Mom and Dad were working. I smiled at the memories. I sat down in between the big roots that were popping out of the ground.
“This used to be my throne.”
“Huh?”
“I played here when I was little. I used to pretend I was a queen and this was my throne.”
“Awe! I can just imagine how cute you were as a little girl. You probably wore a little plastic crown and had a plastic scepter?”
“How in the hell did you know that?”
“Lucky guess. Don’t most little girls have that stuff when they play like they are a queen or princess?”
“I guess they do.”
I sat there staring out into the field. The guys were barely noticeable and the machine looked like a toy from here.
“Thank you for bringing me out here, Caeleb.”
“You’re welcome. I just figured this was a nice place to sit and talk if you wanted to since no one is around.”
We sat there for a little while in silence and then headed back to work.
