1, Corban House
Elle I looked down at the directions scribbled on a scrap piece of paper in my hand. “Corban House” I whispered, as I read the address one last time. I looked up at the tall building in front of me. The very same name was written on the sign that covered the front. Sighing aloud. A warm feeling rushed over me as the thought of finally being somewhere safe set in. I had spent the last week running. When I say running, I mean quite literally running for my life. I didn't know if I was being followed. I had tried to cover my tracks the best I could but my paranoia was getting the better of me. I didn't know if I was being hunted, or whether Haydon would just let me go. Somehow, Haydon doesn't seem like the person to let things go. He would no doubt, have his men out looking for me. I just know it. This is the only place I could think of that he wouldn't come to, Blackwood. I stuffed the crumpled piece of paper back into my pocket.“Here goes nothing!” I sighed as I began walking toward the building. It must be way past midnight by now. The small room at the bottom next to the car park had a sign above it, 'office'. I could see a small lamp that was turned on inside and a woman sitting at a desk watching the television. I reached the door and looked inside cautiously. The woman, who had dark-colored hair with grey streaks, looked around fifty years old. She got up without looking up at me. Reaching for her cane, which was leaning against the wall next to her, she used it to aid her walking as she made her way towards the door. It was as if she knew I was there. I didn't sense a wolf in her, but the air seemed different, witch! “Come in, my child, don't be standing out there all night, we are about to have a storm,” She said as she opened the door and ushered me inside, the sound of wind chimes ringing all around me. It was the first time in days I had been inside somewhere dry and warm. “ Thank you," I said as I stepped in, "I was given this address by some people I met in the forest. They said you might be able to help me,” I said as she pulled out a seat for me, gesturing for me to take a seat. I sat down, finally taking the weight off of my legs. She leaned down beneath her desk, opening something that sounded like a fridge. Placing a bottle of water and a premade sandwich in a plastic wrapper. “You look like you could do with these” She smiled kindly as she lowered herself down into her seat, placing her cane next to her. “Thanks” I answered her, taking the sandwich, I ripped the wrapper off and began to indulge. “I try to help people the best I can. We get many people through that door all in need of help one way or another. There hasn't been one yet that I've not been able to help. The only thing I ask in return is your honesty.” She smiled at me and extended her hand. “I'm Glinda.” “I'm Eloise, but people just call me Elle”, I informed her as I accepted her hand and shook it politely. Opening the bottle of water, I take a large mouthful to try and wash the sandwich down. “So what is it I can help you with Elle,” She asked after a couple of minutes, giving me enough time to finish my sandwich. “I...” I placed my rubbish on the table. I hadn't even thought of this part. What should I tell her? The truth? I would expect she would just kick me straight out that door if I did. “I don't expect all the gory details, Elle. All I ask is for your honesty, I need to know if I am to expect trouble here while you're staying with us,” She said sitting back in her chair waiting for my response. “I don't know if I'm being honest, I ran, but I did cover my tracks best I could. ” I answered. She nodded her head slowly, “ OK, Not to worry, this place is very secure, may I ask who you are running from?" I looked at her, trying my hardest to hold back my tears as the vision of my mother's dying face flashed across my mind. "His name is Haydon, Alpha Haydon" I answered her in barely a whisper. "An Alpha" She raised her brows. "I'm sorry, I can leave if you want me to I don't want to bring trouble here" I began to get up from my seat. "Just wait" She stopped me as she raised her hand motioning for me to sit back down "tell me Elle do you know much about this place?” She asked curiously. I shook my head. “Not really. I was told you help people in bad situations...like me” “That we do. We were founded by queen Embry herself. She also suffered hard times in her life. Many people knew of her k********g and what happened to her. So she used her high status to try and help others that felt had no escape.” She opened a drawer next to her and pulled out a piece of paper. Sliding it in front of me, It was a picture of the opening of the house The King and Queen herself standing outside holding both their children. Below was a list of what services Corban house could help me with. “She set up Corban house for she-wolves that needed help, women that were abused or running from something...even Alpha's. I mean we do get the odd male that asks for our help, but it's mainly females we have here. We can help you with a place to stay a job, I just have to know a few details from you, if you don't want to explain anything else just know I am here if ever you do wish to talk about it” She leaned across and squeezed my hand. “Thankyou”, I breathed as I felt a heavy weight lifted from my shoulders. She pulled another piece of paper in front of her and clicked the top of her pen. “So, we will keep this swift as it is late and, by the looks of things, I think you could do with a bath and a good night's sleep.” I looked down at my clothes, I had worn them for nearly five days while I traipsed through the forest not knowing where I was heading. Well, until I found a lovely couple who were out walking with their daughter. “Sorry,” I said shyly as I wiped the front of my jumper, brushing off the dirt and lose twigs. “Elle” She took hold of my hand and gently placed it in my lap. “Please don't apologize, I was in your position once. I walked through that door nearly twenty years ago. It hadn't long opened so wasn't well known. I only just managed to escape a raid on my coven. Out of forty-three people, only four of us made it out alive. So I have a good idea of how nervous you are right now. I have some spare clothes here if you need them.” She smiled, taking hold of her pen once again. “So let's start with the easy questions. Name?” “Eloise Brooks” I answered. “How and where have you traveled from Elle?” “From the Grey Rock pack, and I traveled through the forest by foot”. She looked up at me, her brows creased. “That's nearly six hundred miles,” she said in a shocked tone. I nodded and looked down, “I know”. I hated looking weak in front of people. “Good god Elle, you poor thing, I'm just glad you've made it here in one piece” she gasped as she began taking notes. “Any family?” I think she already knew the answer to that as she didn't look up at me this time. “No, no family” “So I take it you have nothing with you?” I shook my head. “ OK, not to worry, we can easily sort that out. We are lucky enough to have great funding here from the royals. Let's get you sorted out shall we” she smiled, standing. She walked to a small locked unit and retrieved a set of keys from inside. “Follow me,” She said as she took hold of her cane. I walked out the back of the office, it definitely looked a lot bigger in here than it does from the outside. She took me to a room where I picked out a couple of items of clothing and a fresh pair of shoes. After that, we walked down a small set of stairs, passing several doors. We walked until we stopped outside of a room with the number 21 written on it. As Glinda pushed the key into the lock, a loud rumbling sound came from the sky making me jump. "It's just the storm dear, nothing to fear here" She unlocked the door and turned back, handing me the key, “This is going to be your room. You're free to come and go as you please, but all I ask is you don't have visitors. This is just a precaution, not just for your safety but for the other girls also.” “That's fine” I answered as I walked in, looking around at my new home for the foreseeable future. It was small but homely, basic, but I loved basic, clutter was not my thing. . It was an open-plan living room with a small kitchen situated behind it. Two doors on the back wall, Glinda opened the first, revealing a small bedroom that consisted of a double bed, a wardrobe, and a set of drawers. The other door hid a beautifully tiled bathroom, a showerhead hovered over the bath, with a small sink next to the toilet. “It's just basic, but your free to add bits, as long as it is all left in good repair when you leave” “ Thank you, It's perfect,” I said, looking around at my little home. “Come see me tomorrow, we can discuss things further, but for now get washed up and get a good night's sleep my lovely. I'll drop some breakfast off to you around 9 am.” She didn't give me a chance to respond before she hugged me and walked out of the room. I wasn't too bothered as all I could think of was sliding in that tub and soaking the stress away. And that's exactly what I did. Enzo I dialed Aston's number, putting the phone to my ear. I had enough already, I had traveled six hours from home to attend a wedding I really didn't want to attend. They have worked close to my pack for several years now and they asked if I could be there to bless the wedding. Of course, I couldn't let them down I had to oblige, however, it didn't stop me from hating every minute of it. "Enzo, how are you?" Aston answered, I could hear the smirk that was plastered on his face. "Beta or not, I will still kick your ass when I get home, You didn't tell me Laura was going to be here" I seethed quietly through the mouthpiece, my wolf growled just at the meter mention of her name. I heard him laughing, "Is she? I had no idea" He answered me in a high-pitched tone. "Is that so" I rolled my eyes. I walked at speed through the corridors of the hotel where the wedding was hosted. Luckily my room was farthest away from it on the 38th floor. "Look, just go and enjoy yourself. It won't hurt for you to let loose, and if that happens to be in the arms of Laura again then..." "Don't say another word!" I hissed, "The woman has clung to me for the past three hours like a fly to s**t, I can't shake her" "Hey, you slept with her!" Aston threw back at me "Don't I know it!" My wolf huffed, I rolled my eyes at him, he never liked her, neither did I really. "Like six years ago plus I was drunk!" I said defensively. "So where is she now? you didn't leave the damsel in distress did you?" He asked, clearly thinking the whole situation was one big joke. "I don't know, she went to the restroom, so I used it as my opportunity to escape" I pulled my keycard out of my jacket pocket as the view of my door was getting closer. "I put money on it she is in your room, waiting for you" He laughed, I could hear Lottie, my cousin in the background telling him to stop laughing. "I highly doubt it, Aston, I learned my lesson last time, She doesn't know what room I'm in" I pushed the card into the door hearing the lock click open. I pushed open the door to the very sight Aston knew I would see. Laura laid naked on my bed, a glass of champagne in her hand, trying her best to look seductive. "Turn and leave, now!" My wolf spat at me, He hated it when I had any contact with women. I once agreed with him, only wanting a mate of my own, to have the happiness my parents have. But as time went by, I think it is safe to say I didn't have a mate. If I did I couldn't find her and trust me, I searched everywhere I could. "You took your time handsome," She said provocatively. The sound of laughter coming through the phone interrupted her, Aston shouting "I knew it, she's there!" clearly telling Lottie what was happening. "I'm coming home tonight!" I deadpanned as I shut off the phone. "Sorry, emergency back home, I've got to go!" I told the naked woman as I backed out of the room and closed the door behind me, all the while my wolf threw insult after insult at her.
