Peter built a fire in the hearth of Carl Rossi’s guesthouse and sat back on the sofa, listening to the flames crackle. Rossi had given him the key to the place before Peter left Rossi’s office for the Eagles’ Nest. Usually, Kate lived here, but, Rossi explained, she’d been staying in the main house lately. As soon as he got in, he’d called Marcy to let her know he wouldn’t be home tonight. She asked him about the filly, and Peter had held back on the details for the moment, telling her only that the creature was a firebrand.
