Couched in a booth at the Eagles’ Nest, the only pub in town and a few doors down from her store, Kate told Cindy what had happened. She watched her friend’s blue eyes widen in astonishment. “I can’t believe he actually said that to you. Lord and master!” Cindy giggled. “He didn’t know who he was dealing with.” Kate nodded over her burger basket as she sipped her soda. In the background, a Garth Brooks song played from the jukebox. “Damn straight. He was speechless by the time I left.” She looked down at her half-eaten burger, remembering the scene. Though she didn’t admit it to Cindy, her exchange with Peter Manning had actually caused her blood to heat and race to parts of her that had not tingled in much too long. The more she thought about it, the more she realized she’d eaten up th
