The Pengali boats in the column didn’t have engines and needed to stay close to the shore so that the poles could still reach the bottom. But since they were now safe, we parted ways. We made for the island where we had found Robert Davidson. The sea was tranquil and there was no one to be seen, including the beisili who would only come to the shore a bit later in the year. We might spot one or two in between the islands, sticking their heads up out of the water to investigate us. The island was lush and green, the shoreline inaccessible with the exception of the point with the beach on either side. No sign of former habitation remained visible from the beach.
