Chapter Five

Third party POV

When Maeve rushed down the stairs, she expected to see her mate but instead she was greeted by a handsome blonde-haired man waiting for her. His brown eyes were filled with something that looked like pity, but Maeve shrugged it off.

“My name is Ben, I am Alpha Ashton’s beta. He is waiting for you in the car and asked me to escort you. Your family are waiting to say their goodbyes outside” with that he turned on his heel and walked outside.

Maeve quickly hurried after him.

Outside she was quickly bombarded with hugs from her parents. When she walked over to Emily, Emily quickly wrapped her arms around Maeve, holding her close. “Let me know if it is worth finding one” she chuckled, “you better text and call all the time or I will personally find you and beat your ass” she joked but her humour was tinged with sadness.

“I will” Maeve said as she pulled away, wiping a stray tear from her cheek.

After her goodbyes, Maeve walked over to where Ben was holding a SUV door open and hopped in.

Her senses were quickly overpowered due to the proximity of her mate.

As they pulled away, she stared at her mate and quickly said while inching closer to him “I am so happy you want me to go back with you. I know it sounds silly but when you walked away from me, I thought you didn’t want me and-” SMACK.

Her words were cut off by the back of Ashton’s hand making contact with her cheek. She fell back smacking her head on the glass.

“let me be very clear…” he said coldly, staring at her with contempt “I do not now, or ever will, want you. You are only coming with me because now that I have found you my wolf will be weaker if we are separated and I can’t let that happen”

Maeve’s POV

I held my cheek with one hand while the other clutched at my chest. It felt as though something was tearing my heart open from the inside out. I could feel the sting of tears threatening to fall.

How could he be so cold to his own mate? I understand that the Blood Moon pack are ruthless and will wipe out a pack as quickly as looking at them but surely their leader would still have enough of a heart to care for the person he was made for?

Moon Goddess, why would you do this to me?

The rest of the journey was spent in silence as I tried to stay as far from him as possible.
