Ch. 2: Prologue

773 Words
It was a beautiful Autumn night in Wolfe County, PA. The air was cool and brisk but clear and pleasant. The stars were out twinkling brightly and the moon shone softly in the sky above. It was a quiet night in October, early enough in the evening that there were still people moving about the streets of the small town in rural Pennsylvania. Somewhere across town, a woman cries out in pain, disturbing the otherwise peacefulness and quiet of the local hospital's maternity ward. “You’re doing so good, Baby! I’m so proud of you!” The soon-to-be proud Poppa whispers to his young wife as she cries out yet again while trying to push a new life into the world. She glared at her husband, gritting her teeth as she responded in a tired, pain-filled voice “SHUT UP, TYLER! I HATE YOU! YOU DID THIS TO ME!!” Her response causes the doctor to chuckle softly while Tyler just smiles, kisses his wife’s sweaty brow, and says “I know, baby. I love you!” “Okay, Crystal. This is it! Just one more big push and the baby will be out!” The doctor says as he watches the monitor and when the little line begins to rise, indicating another contraction is building, he says “Now push, Crystal! Hard as you can!”. Crystal screamed out again, the sound so loud it was a wonder everyone didn’t cringe, and she kept on screaming until she heard it. The most beautiful sound she had ever heard filled the room as her little baby drew its first breath and started to softly cry as the doctor announced “CONGRATULATIONS! IT’S A BOY!” and Crystal dropped back against her pillows with a happy smile filling her features. The doctor gently laid the baby boy on his Momma’s abdomen before turning to Tyler and asking “would you like to cut the cord?“ Tyler beamed with pride as he nodded and said “h*ll yeah!”, barely able to contain his joy as the nurse giggled a little and helped him put on a pair of rubber gloves then handed him the surgical scissors. Tyler leaned in and placed the scissors where the doctor indicated and with one quick snip he cut the cord, officially welcoming his new son into the world. Crystal took this time to relax for a moment, smiling down at her little baby boy as she waited for the doctor to finish. However, her rest was short lived as the monitor began to gently “blip” again, telling them they needed to finish up. A nurse came over and quickly scooped up the precious baby boy from his Mother's abdomen, lifting him up and taking him out of the room where they would clean him up and take his measurements. As she did so, she couldn’t help but comment “oh this one’s gonna be a heartbreaker!” The comment made Tyler beam with pride before returning his attention to his wife. The nurse quickly left the room with the baby in her arms. As the door closed behind her, she could hear the doctor telling Crystal “OK Crystal, you’re officially a pro at this now. Let’s get baby number two reunited with its big brother, shall we?” Six minutes later there was the sound of a baby quietly fussing as the doctor announced “CONGRATULATIONS! IT’S A GIRL!” ***** Unbeknownst to the happy couple, darkness fell upon the hospital that evening. It came in the form of a young nurse. This young nurse calmly walked into the nursery where all the babies were sleeping, no one paying her any mind as she seemed to belong there. She walked straight over to the baby boy’s bassinet and began to calmly wheel it from the nursery as though taking him to see his Mother and Father. She walked casually down the hallway, no one paying her any mind still, as she moved toward the emergency exit stairwell. Entering the stairwell, she pushed the bassinet up against the wall and lifted the baby from the small crib, adjusted his little blue blanket, and walked right out of the building into the darkness just as a light rain began to fall. A few minutes later, inside the hospital, Crystal cried out once more. Only this time the sound was filled with a different kind of pain. As Crystal's anguished cries filled the air, the nurse, her arms still clutching the baby tightly, disappeared into the night. Never to be seen or heard from again.
