“Hey,” Dolores walked over to Callum at training.
“Hi,” he smiled at her with his arms crossed over his chest. Dolores Hawkes, or more fondly known as Day, was subjectively the prettiest girl Cal had ever seen. He had always thought this, ever since girls had come into his radar as a teen. She was two years younger than him, so the age gap was a little strange at first which is why he had never made a move.
But now that she was almost eighteen, he wanted nothing more than to kiss her. Even with her sunflower blonde hair in a messy bun and sweat gleaming on her golden skin.
They were friends though. He had to keep reminding himself of that. They were just friends. She was also saving herself for her mate.
“I am going to go back to my room for a shower,” she said and he wished he could go with her, “I’ll see you later.”
“See you later,” he smiled back and watched her jog all the way back to the pack house.

Day had every intention of going back to the pack house for a shower but her road from the training ground to the pack house was blocked by her arch enemy – Rhysand Tucker. She loathed that male. For all the years she had been friends with Cal, Rhys had been torturing her. Throwing her into near freezing lakes, stealing her clothes, locking her in cupboards, pushing her into bushes – his torturing had no bounds.
This meant she had to take the long way back to the pack house. It was longer and she had to climb through bushes but that beat a run in with Rhys.
“Success,” she said to herself with a pose as she made it to her room. It was a small room but she had decorated it with her stuff. Odds and ends she had collected over the years. Her fascination with ducks had turned into a full-blown obsession when she turned sixteen and started working in the pack kitchen to earn some pocket money. There was an antique shop just off pack territory that sold hand carved, wooden duck figurines. Her first paycheck had bought her a few ducks. Two years later and her room was filled with little duck figurines. Ducks in top hats and raincoats and shower caps. If a duck was in a cute outfit – she had it. She also had a lot of books. One of her friends from school – Gabe – had helped her put shelves up to keep all of her books. Her other friend – Charlotte – had painted murals in the small room. Charlotte, more fondly known as Charlie, was obsessed with art. She always had a pen on her to doodle and enjoyed painting when she was bored. So, Day’s room was filled with paintings both straight on the walls and in frames. All in all, it was a cosy, welcoming room.
Day grabbed her shower bag, towels and a change of clothes to walk down the hall to the communal bathrooms. It was an awkward time so there was no one else in the room. The water was also still warm as she washed her hair and body. She placed her long blonde hair into a braid instead of drying it and placed her face cream on in the bathroom mirror. Light grey leggings, her yellow baby doll top and yellow ballet flats were tonight's outfit. She was not cooking tonight so she would just be enjoying dinner.
On her way back to her room, she groaned in dread at the third alpha triplet by her door. She usually only saw Cal on any given day. It was unusual for her to see all three triplets on the same day. Alexander Tucker was beautiful in every sense of the word. He had chocolate brown hair and eyes. With defined features, her belly clenched when she looked at him. He was leaning against the wall next to her door on his phone. Those brown eyes caught mine and my breath hitched.
“I need you to make that pasta dish I like,” he said. The oldest triplet was a fussy eater. Greer was the main cook tonight and Lex detested her meals. She enjoyed spicy Indian style food whereas Lex cared only for Italian or Mediterranean style foods. Which happened to be Day’s speciality. “Please,” he added tightly.
“The creamy one or the tomato one?” she asked as she opened her door to drop her bag and wet towel on the floor by the door.
“The tomato one,” he said.
“Give me thirty minutes and I will have it done.” She bowed her head to the alpha to be as he nodded at her and walked away.

“He’s not even going to try it?” Greer groaned as she Day tied an apron on.
“Apparently not,” Day walked over to the walk-in fridge for her supplies. There was always a ball of fresh pasta dough in case Lex refused dinner – his go-to being pasta.
“But I made a special mild curry just for him,” Greer dramatically flops into the island chair.
“Maybe next time,” Day lifts the pots out of the drawer and starts boiling water. The tomato pasta recipe was an easy one. She boiled the tomatoes and fried up the crumbed chicken, onion, garlic, carrots and broccoli while flattening and cutting the dough. Then it went into the water to boil. She also grated the parmesan cheese. The whole time Greer was yammering on about something Day was only half listening to.
Day enjoyed the company of other people and tried her best to be nice to everyone, but Greer rubbed her the wrong way. Greer was the type of person to always be gossiping or complaining. Usually, it was complaining about whatever gossip she had. Today's gossip was about the beta to be – Gabe. Day was close friends with Gabe, so she knew the truth of the story. Kaltain was the one that dumped him. The poor male was distraught after it happened, so we all took turns visiting him and getting him out of bed and to school. Then she had the audacity to say that Gabe cheated on her and that is why they ended things. Stephanie had punched a girl in the face for yelling a slur at Gabe in the hall. And that is why Steph was Day’s best friend. They balanced each other out. Steph was the all or nothing, don’t f**k with me kind of person while Day was the laid back, little miss sunshine.
Their group was like that though – they all balanced each other. Gabe (Gabriel Banks) was the stoic teddy bear while Topper (Christopher Dutton) was the carefree, daredevil. That left Jay (Jamie St Cloud) as the funny friend. The five of them were tight, always had been. Sometimes Day felt a little out of place because all of her friends had important parents and she was just the daughter of two dead warriors. Then she remembered how none of them actually cared so why should she?
Speak of the devil and he shall appear. Gabe walked into the kitchen which thankfully made Greer shut up. He was handsome in the conventional way – tall, muscled, dark hair, piercing green eyes – but his personality outweighed it all. He had the biggest heart Day had ever had the fortune of meeting.
“Feeling any better?” she asked as he slumped into the chair across from where she was working and lay his head on his hands on the counter. The slow movement of his headshake had her heart breaking. He was doing better though – he was out of bed. For the past few days since the breakup, they had taken turns taking food up to him in bed. His parents were currently doing treaty negotiations with the Alpha and Luna at the Cradle Stone Pack which left Gabe in the hands of his friends to keep him alive while he nursed his broken heart.
“That smells good,” he mumbled while sitting up, “Can I have some?”
“You too?” Greer deigned to speak to him. She was Kaltain’s friend so speaking to the enemy was frowned upon. Clearly her ego trumped loyalty.
“I made extra so you can have a plate,” Day called over her shoulder as she drained the pasta and added it to the tomato sauce.
“You are the best,” he said.
“What is wrong with my curry?” Greer turned to him and pestered, “I worked so hard on it and it is delicious.”
“Stop bothering him, Greer,” Day snapped at her.
“No,” Greer said, “I need to know what is so bad about my cooking?”
“It has too many flavours,” Lex walked into the kitchen and answered for her, “And your rice is always overcooked.”
Day supressed her laugh as Lex leaned against the counter next to Gabe. They were friends and Lex actually took an interest in Gabe’s health.
“You doing better man?” Lex asked as he pocketed his phone.
“A little,” Gabe grumbled.
“Kaltain is a b***h and never deserved you anyway. Your mate will appreciate you,” Lex comforted him. Alexander had an obsession with mates. He just returned from a Europe tour of visiting different packs to find his mate. Day wanted to say that was not how it worked. You could not go looking for your mate. Mates were gifts dropped into your lap when you needed to find each other most.
“Cheating bastard,” Greer said under her breath.
“Excuse me?” Lex more commanded than asked, “Kaltain is spreading rumours and lies. I would also implore you to show more respect to your future Beta.”
Day clamped her thighs together to try and block the smell of her arousal. Hot, smart and stands up for her friends. Alexander Tucker was definitely going to make an appearance in tonight’s naught dream.
