4. Mates?

1976 Words
Today was going to a whirlwind for Day. She was up at 3:30 to get into the kitchen for cooking. As she was getting dressed she heard a morning stretch kind of groan followed by a yawn. She looked around the room but found no one. “Hello?” She said, “is anyone here?” “Hi,” a feminine voice sounded. Day’s eyes darted around the room and bathroom but there was no one at all. Then she felt it – it appeared in her mind so vividly it was surreal – a golden brown wolf shaking and stepping forward. “Hi,” Day said back in wonder. This feeling was indescribable – she felt like a piece of her that had been missing was finally put back into place. “Hi Dolores. I’m Daffodil, your wolf.” “Daffodil?” Day said. Daffodil? How did he know? Or was it just one big coincidence? “You can call me Daf. Just like I know you like to be called Day or Lory.” Day chuckled. Only Gabe called her Lory. He was her first friend when she was younger and her mom used to call her Lory. She couldn’t bear to have anyone call her that after her mom died but Gabe kept using it. It grew to comfort her. “It’s nice to finally have you here,” Day said as she finished getting ready. “It’s nice to finally be here.” Day grabbed her bag off the dressing table and headed downstairs. “Mmmm,” Daf hummed, “that smells good.” Day lifted her nose into the air and inhaled. It did smell good. The faintest hint of just baked pizza. She wondered who had been cooking but didn’t have time to dwell on it now. ~ “Alpha. Luna.” Day smiled as she bumped into Cal’s parents on her way back to their house to change for the party. The were walking in the opposite direction all dressed up to greet the incoming packs. “Day.” Luna Cece wrapped Day in a hug. “Happy birthday, dear.” “Wolf come in yet?” Alpha Henry asked her as he tucked the Luna back into his side. “She came in this morning.” “Can’t wait to see you in wolf form.” The Alpha nodded at her. It made Daf giddy that her Alpha approved of her. “So glad you’re staying with us,” The Luna touched Day’s arm, “it’s so nice to have you with us for a little. I know Cal certainly enjoys it. And I hope Rhys isn’t giving you too much trouble.” “Thank you for having me,” was all Day said. She refused to discuss Rhys with his parents. “We have to get going,” The Alpha said, “We will see you at the party.” “I left a little present on your bed. Happy Birthday sweetie.” And with that they parted ways. The house was quiet when she entered so Day assumed the triplets weren’t home. She went upstairs to find the most beautiful dress on her bed. It was a soft pink with a big satin bow on the back. There were matching pink flats next to it with jewellery to match. Day looked at herself in the mirror – dress on, hair pinned up, makeup done – and wondered if tonight would be the night. Would she find her mate and be whisked away like a fairytale? What would become of her then? She knew there was more to her life than becoming some males property. But that was out of her hands now. Instead of dwelling on it too much, she touched up her lipstick and headed out her door. ‘You home?’ Cal’s voice sounded in her head. ‘This mind link thing is cool,’ she said back. His chuckle filled her head, ‘I am. Are you?’ ‘Im busy getting ready.’ ‘I’ll come wait with you.’ She cut the link and walked downstairs to his room. ‘Oh Sweet Goddess,’ Daf purred, ‘that smell is heavenly.’ It was divine – old books and freshly cut grass. Sweet heavens! Day’s eyes rolled back into her head as she inhaled deeply. She knocked on Cal’s door as she said, “can you smell that too?” When she opened her eyes to the open door, Daf howled, ‘MATE!’ Cal was looking at her like a man lost in the desert looking at water. She opened and closed her mouth not quite knowing what to say – what to do? “Cal,” was all she could get out. “Thank the goddess.” He cupped her face in his hands and kissed her. She held onto his wrists as she kissed him back. His arms moved to around her body as hers moved around his neck. She kissed Cal Tucker with no doubt that he was her mate – her everything. The male she would get to spend the rest of her life with. They eventually broke the kiss, breathless and panting. “Don’t cry,” his voice held so much pain as he brushed the tear from her cheek. “Happy tears,” her voice quivered with her lips, “I would have chosen you. If we had a choice, mine would have been you.” She rested her forehead against his. “I would have chosen you.” ~ “Where the hell is Cal?” Rhys asked Lex as they stood in the insufferable party. Formal gatherings had never been Rhys’s thing. Lex, on the other hand, thrived in this kind of environment. That was how Rhys knew his brother was going to be the perfect Alpha. He used to resent his brother for his birth right, but as they got older and Lex’s responsibilities increased while Rhys could do whatever he wanted, he stopped wanting to be Alpha. He was happy being a warrior and set his sights on head warrior instead. As for Cal, Rhys had never envied Cal. The youngest of the brothers had no purpose in life. He drifted through life and it made Rhys angry. Him and Cal had never seen eye to eye and his younger brother infuriated Rhys to the point of violence. He loved his brother though.despite everything, he had the closest relationship with Cal. They had a strange understanding that baffled the rest of their family and the pack. At these types of parties, Rhys tended to stick with Cal who kept the conversation light and mingled with people Rhys could tolerate, unlike the ones Lex was forced to speak to. “Probably still at the house,” Lex looked around, “I have an uneasy feeling. Let’s go find him.” Rhys had been feeling uneasy the whole week. Something was not right and neither him nor his wolf, Aaron, could put a finger on it. He just chalked it up to Dolores being in his house. But if Lex was also unsettled, something had to be wrong. They walked back across the gardens from the pack house to their house. The first thing Rhys did was pull of the tie choking him. He hated formal wear – avoided it at all costs. Which was just another reason why he could not be Alpha. ‘She’s here,’ Aaron growled, ‘our mate is here.’ Rhys’s steps slowed while Lex’s got quicker. Lex had been looking for his mate since he turned eighteen – had traveled the world to find her – and while Rhys applauded that, he was not ready to meet his mate. He was not ready! There were too many things he wanted to do before he was tied down, trapped, by a female wanting him to settle and have pups. As he rounded the corner, the sight female in front of him, standing next to Cal made his stomach drop. “Fuck.” ~ Lex could not stop staring at the female in front of him. Dolores Hawkes was his mate. She had been here the entire time, right under his nose. Lex had scoured the world for his mate and she had been his brothers crush the whole time. Warren, his wolf, was howling in glee. His wolf was a hopeless romantic which was one of the reasons Lex had been searching for his mate from such an early age. “f**k,” was the first thing that came out of Dolores’s mouth. Not how he imagined this moment going. “Dolores,” he said and stepped forward. She took a step back. He watched as she pulled her hand out of Cal’s and kept moving backwards. Her fear lingered in the air and it broke him to see her scared. ‘Go to her,’ Warren growled. ‘No,’ Lex said, ‘she’s scared. We need to give her a moment.’ “This cannot be happening,” she said more to herself than them. Cal turned to her and she held her hands up. He did the same to show that he wouldn’t move. “Day, this happens sometimes,” Cal explained, “when you have twins or triplets they sometimes have the same mate.” “So,” she gestures with her hands and giggles nervously as she speaks, “that I’m not crazy and, in fact, have three mates?” “Yes,” Lex replied. “No,” she said in a dead voice, “f*****g, no.” “Dolores,” Lex repeated. “Stop calling me that,” she insisted. “Day, calm down,” Cal stepped up to her and she didn’t move. Instead she took a deep breath, “it’ll be okay.” She nodded, “how will this be okay?” “We knew this might happen,” he explained to her and touched her arm, “we’ve discussed it. It’s under control.” “You’ve discussed it?” Her demeanour changed, “Well if you’ve already discussed it then it’ll be fine.” She pulled out of his grip and marched towards the stairs. Lex tried to reach out for her but she dodged his arms and pushed past Rhys who was rooted to the spot with a grave look on his face. Lex stated to go after her until Cal said, “Don’t” ~ He was f****d! Cal was absolutely and totally f****d! He knew this was a possibility- that he would have to share his mate with his brothers – but he had hoped it wouldn’t happen. The majority of the time it occurred with identicals, which they were not. And he had f****d up with Day. She had spent a lot of her life having other people discuss her future, which she hated, and the triplets had done the same thing. He could tell Lex wanted to go after her, but Cal stopped his brother. “I can’t just let her go,” he pressed. “You can,” Cal argued, “she is not an i***t. And will resent you even more if you go after her. Give it time and I’ll send Gabe and Steph to get her.” “Fine,” Alex said as he stalked away. Rhys just stood there looking as if he had seen a ghost. “You okay?” Cal asked. He knew where Rhys stood on the mate issue so his brother must be freaking out. “I have a mate,” he said, a little out of it. “You do.” “I don’t quite know what to do now,” Rhys looked at Cal. “You have time to figure it out,” Cal patted his brothers shoulder while walking past to go downstairs.
