Between Two Mates

Chapter 2

-Rose POV-

“Harper!” I shout.

Harper starts laughing.

“That’s not funny you clown!” I look at her with an irritated expression.

“Hey, I'm taking a page out of Nova’s book... and Helix’s.” She says. “But no, this car is not stolen. Alpha Maximus let me borrow it until my car is fixed.”

I almost had a heart attack because I thought she had actually stolen the car as Nova has done in the past. I think I am a bit traumatized.

“So, he let you use it just like that?” I question. “I mean... you recked your own car.”

“Yeah well, if he wants to stay on my mom’s good side, he will do anything.” She scoffs with a smirk.

“That’s a bit manipulative.” I mumble.

Harper shrugs her shoulders. “He chose her as his mate so he knows what he got into and my mother knows how to get what she wants.” She shakes a little. “She can be scary sometimes.”

Harper is the daughter of our soon-to-be Luna. Her mother is the daughter of the Alpha of an allied pack and Alpha Maximus chose her as his new mate.

Harper and I have become good friends but Nova is my best friend. No one can replace that nutjob.

We are now in the high school but we don’t go to it since we already graduated. We volunteer in the summer with tutoring. I always liked the whole teaching thing. Even though I am of beta blood, I am not a warrior like Nova who is of Alpha blood, so I really don’t fit in the pack in that kind of way. I want to do something else with my life. Teaching seems to appeal to me. Harper is here doing this with me just because she is bored but I welcome her company.

Tory passes by us giving me that mugged look. I haven't done anything to the girl but she seems to dislike me.

Harper and I roll our eyes and start walking away.

“So tonight, is that party in the lake-” Before Harper can finish, she is interrupted.

“Are you going?” Helix asks from behind us.

I look back and my heart skips a beat when I see him. I am so attracted to him. I can’t believe he might actually be my mate. Just a few more days and we’ll know for sure.

I smile. “Yes.”

“Morning to you too mister suave.” Harper says with a smile.

Her blond hair matches his. She also has green eyes but hers are a dark olive while Helix’s green eyes are super bright.

Helix chuckles. “Sorry. Morning girls.”

I smile feeling bashful. I always feel stupid when I am near him. It didn’t use to be like this. Before he got his wolf, I saw him like a little brother since he is Nova’s kid brother and he was always bothering her. But now, he doesn't look like a little kid anymore. That's what happens when you get your wolf. Your body instantly changes and he changed into a hunk. He used to be a bit shorter than me but now he is taller and has muscles that weren't there before.

My phone suddenly starts pinging with messages. When I look at it, I gasp when I see a picture of Nova’s hair.

“No... you didn’t.” I look at Helix.

His eyes widen. “Don’t believe a single word she says about me.”

Harper and Helix’s friend Cooper start laughing. I want to laugh too but at the same time, I can’t believe he did that. Knowing Nova, she is going to come at him with a vengeance.

“Anyway, enough about my ugly pink-haired sister. Are you two going to the lake tonight?” Helix asks.

I hold my laugh. He is always so funny in the way he says things.

I nod. “Yeah, you know we are.”

“Awesome, see you girls there.” He gives us a charming flirty smile while Harper and I giggle and he then walks away.

I then narrow my eyes as I watch him leave.

This little twirp used to say stuff in that flirty way and I would swat him away as if he was an annoying fly. Now, with just a smile, he makes me sweat.

Harper and I watch him leave and then we look at each other and start laughing.

“He and Cooper are so hot.” She says.

“Yea... they are.” I say and then mumble. “Who would have known.”

The day goes on as usual and after, I head home. As I drive up to the packhouse, I quickly spot my brother, Gabriel.

“Dad still riding your ass?” I ask.

“Hu! Yea.”

My dad is the beta of the pack and he wants Gabriel to be Dominic's beta when he takes command of the pack. So, dad works Gabriel extra hard. and I sometimes feel bad for him.

“Hang in there.” I pat his back.

He smiles. “Thanks.”

We bicker like normal siblings tend to do but for the most part, we get along well. Unlike Helix and Nova. Those two can be too much sometimes.

I leave Gabriel training and head inside the packhouse. I head upstairs but stop at Nova’s and Dominic’s room.

I knock and Nova opens the door. The pink curly frizz is the first thing that my eyes zone in on.

“Do you see what my brother did to me! Rose! If he ends up your mate, reject him! Cause him pain!” She yells.

“Uhm... it couldn’t be fixed?” I ask.

“I have an appointment at the salon for tomorrow morning. GRRR! I sometimes hate him!!”

“At least it’s only sometimes.” I mumble.

“No! Not sometimes! All the time. Look at my eyepatch. He keeps bedazzling them!”

I giggle because I think it’s cute that he can do that.

“Not funny, Rose.”

“Okay fine. But I don’t think he is that bad.”

She rolls her eyes. “Of course, you don’t.”

I giggle. “Anyway, I’m going to go get ready for the lake. Am I riding with you?”

She sighs. “Yea.”

I leave her still angry and head to my room. I lounge about and then get ready. When I am done, I head out to the front of the house where I meet with Dominic and Nova. We drive to the lake and when we get out, the first person we see is Helix.

“Don't be so angry. It’s just hair.” Helix says when Nova comes out of the car and she growls at him.

“It is not just hair!” She shouts. “You wouldn’t have done something like this to Rose now would you?”

He shakes his head. “Hell no. She’s going to be my mate. You are just my sister.”

My cheeks flare. He is always so forward but when I show interest, he kind of gets scared a bit. The last time we sat in the back of Dominic's car together, I moved my hand to his and he got really nervous to the point he couldn’t talk properly. I think it’s so funny.

We quickly meet Harper and some of Helix's guy friends.

“What the hell is wrong with that mess?” One of the guys asks pointing at Nova’s hair.

Nova sighs but then her face turns to a mischievous one. “Yea, Helix has this collection of these Barbie pink hair dye products and he used one on my hair. This is how it turned out.”

The guys give Helix a questionable look.

Helix’s eyes widen. “I do not!” He shouts.

Nova laughs. “Yea he does. Since he was a kid, he loves playing with barbie dolls and loves anything pink.”

“I DO NOT! ...You know what? Screw you, Nova.” He says and then puts his arms around me and Harper and starts leading us away. “I am hanging out with the prettiest ladies tonight and you can’t mess this up.”

I feel over the moon with his arm around me but that soon turns into a bit of anger when Tory runs over to Helix.

“Hey, you’re here!” She gives him a big smile and he returns it.

(Grr. This little slut... and I am not talking about Tory here.) My eyes are trained at Helix.

He lets go of me and Harper and then Tory grabs his hand and pulls him with her.

“Come here. I wanted to talk to you.” She says with a whiny voice.

Helix laughs. “Okay, okay.” He says and lets her drag him away.

“Well, that went south fast.” Harper says.

I am a bit angry.

“Hey, Harper.” We hear a guy say from behind us.

Harpe’s face turns to a big smile. “Hey, Shawn.” She looks back at me and whispers. “See you later. Gonna go have some fun.”

I nod, still looking at Helix.

(If this boy is my mate, he better get straight soon.)
