Mariam’s P.O.V.
“Your husband is the most stubborn person that I have met in my life, Mariam”, mom grunted in frustration. I smiled at looking at her and then looked at Rehaana who was feeding me right now. She also had pursed her lips into a thin line to suppress her laughter. “Trust me, mom… that I know well”, I winked at my mom while answering her in a teasing tone. She glared at me and I looked at Rehaana again. It had been fifteen days that Demitry brought us back to his mansion. Demitry didn’t put me in the hospital. Instead, he bought every medical facility for me. I had the best doctors beside me who were taking care of me. I got my clear vision back a few days ago and I couldn’t tell how relieved I was when I saw him again for the first time after getting my vision back.
“I am really glad that he brought you here, mom. At least I also can get your love now”, Rehaana chimed in this time with a grin on her face. Mom slumped down her shoulders in defeat this time. Rehaana had this ultimate weapon against my mom whenever she complained about Demitry taking her with me here. Rehaana started her calling mom since she met her. My mother also loved her now as her own daughter. Rehaana wiped my mouth and then made me drink some water as I finished my lunch. She is taking care of me from day one. I was not able to make big movements and that was irritating me now. I didn’t know what destiny had for me. I never liked to be dependent on everyone all my life. I was always independent but now…..
“Rehaana…. What’s wrong with you honey?” I came out of my stance when I heard my mom’s worried tone. I looked at Rehaana who looked so pale right now. “Rehaana”, I tried to sit up but winced in pain in my head and in my lower back. Mom immediately dragged her wheelchair near Rehaana. I looked at Rehaana helplessly. Her whole face was covered with sweat right now. “Sit here…. Come baby… sit here”, mom made her sit on her lap. She was not breathing as if someone had strangled her. “Mom… what’s wrong with her?” I yelled and my mom looked at me helplessly. She was holding Rehaana in her embrace with her fractured hand. I immediately pressed the emergency button.
I took my phone too that was under my pillow and dialled Demitry’s number. “What’s happened?” suddenly a nurse immediately came inside running towards mom and Rehaana. “Call someone now”, mom yelled at her as she refused to let go Rehaana. “Y… yes”, the nurse panicked and immediately ran out of the house. “Rehaana….. she is not good”, I cried as soon as Demitry picked up the call. “We are on our way, mom…. Call the doctor immediately. He knows everything”, it was Dexter who picked up the call. I could feel worried in his tone. “Okay… please come as soon as possible”, I said to him and then we hung up.
At the same time, two security guards entered the room. “Lay her down here”, I immediately commanded them. “We need to take her to her room, ma’am”, one of them said in a polite tone while trying to take Rehaana from mom’s lap. Mom was still holding her tightly. “I said to lay her down here with me. Don’t you understand a simple command? I will talk with Demitry. Lay her down here”, I commanded them with gritted teeth. They looked hesitant. “Do I need to stand up and make it by myself?” I was now really infuriated. They looked at each other and then took Rehaana from my mom’s lap and placed her near me on the bed.
“Rehaana…. Hey”, I scooted myself near her with a bit difficulty but my pain was not my concern right now. She was now unconscious. This sudden event had taken me off guard. I didn’t know anything about Rehaana’s health conditions. She looked fit and neither Demitry told me that she is sick. The security guard brought my mom to the other side of the bed so that she could be near to her. The doctor and the nurse came inside the room almost running towards her. “Check her pulse and blood pressure first”, the doctor immediately commanded the nurse. “Come from this side”, I immediately asked the nurse to cross me so that she could do her work easily from the bed. The doctor was on the other side of the bed. “Bring the oxygen cylinder”, Dr Reynold instructed the security guard and it panicked me. “Oxygen cylinder??? What for???” I immediately asked him in a panic tone.
Dr Reynold looked at me helplessly. “Dr Reynold…. She asked you a question”, my mom was getting impatient now. “This is not my place to tell you about her health condition, ma’am. I can only tell you that she is sick and right now, her pulse is going down”, Dr Reynold told me without looking at me as he pricked her vein on the back of her hand. My heart was beating abnormally right now. “Don’t panic, Mrs Davenport. You need to calm yourself down. I can’t attend two of you at the same time”, he immediately yelled and I looked at him with hazy eyes now. “Don’t panic, Mariam… don’t panic… she needs you… she needs you”, I tried to calm myself down.
The headache had intensified now. “I…I… will be fine… take care of her”, I said to him in a painful expression and closed my eyes. I needed to calm myself down. This is not the time to panic. She needed the doctor right now. My condition would not help her. Stay calm… stay calm… I reasoned my panic heart and tried to calm my breath down. I opened my eyes again when I felt myself calm and the headache also lessen. I saw her again. She was now attached to a dip and her mouth was covered with an oxygen mask. “Go and arrange the CT”, Dr Reynold instructed the nurse who nodded. She was still sitting on the bed from where she was attending Rehaana. “Is she alright?” I asked him in a worried tone.
He shook his head and then looked at me. “We need to perform a scan on her. Have you informed Mr Davenport?” he asked me and I immediately nodded. “You can perform the scan if my consent can work here. I am her sister-in-law and legally her guardian with Demitry”, I immediately answered him. He looked a bit hesitant but then looked at me again. “I think this will work”, he said and then stood up from the bed. “I need to make some calls”, he said and then stormed out of the room. “What’s wrong with her, honey?” mom asked me in a choked voice. She was still holding Rehaana’s hand in her hold. “I don’t know, mom…. I really don’t know”, I said in a cracked voice. The security guards were still inside the room for helping us if we needed any.
“We are shifting her to the medical facility downstairs. You need to sign this paper”, Dr Reynold came back into the room after a few minutes. “Give me”, I immediately raised my fit hand. He came near to me and gave me the pen. I was glad that I could write with both hands. I immediately signed the paper after reading the instructions. He took the papers from my hand and thanked me. “What’s wrong with her, Dr Reynold?” I asked him once again in a worried tone. He took a deep breath and then looked at the paper and then to Rehaana. “Mr Davenport will be here shortly and he will tell you everything, Mrs Davenport. All I can say is that she is really sick”, he said in a calm but pained voice. “I understand you, Dr Reynold. Just take good care of her. Ask for anything that you think is necessary for her treatment”, I said without beating the bush. I know one thing about me and Rehaana is that we had the same blood group. I didn’t know why but I have this hunch that I needed to do something for her.
Soon they shifted her unconscious body out of my room. I never felt so helpless that I was feeling today. I was helpless before when I was completely dependent on Demitry and Dexter for everything. I was helpless that time but not like this. She was like a sister to me and I couldn’t do for her right now. Mom insisted on going with her. She was so stubborn that she didn’t let Rehaana go unless they agreed on her condition. She didn’t know anything about medical terms and conditions but her mother’s instinct was not letting her go Rehaana without her. I took a deep breath again when I felt my headache intensify again. I didn’t want them to worry about me right now.
I stayed there alone for I didn’t know how long. Only a nurse came inside a few times for giving me medicine and asked me if I needed something or any kind of assistance. Every time I asked her about Rehaana and she always told me that Rehaana was still under observation. I waited patiently for anyone to come to me. My mom was still there as she refused to leave that place without Rehaana. Every second was like a day for me. Her sweet smiling and her caring nature were enough to make me protective of her. When we met for the first time after I was discharged from the hospital, she welcomed me with open hands. She was a much better sister than Valerie. She always cheered me up whenever I felt low. She was the motivation that made me survive their grandfather’s birthday party. The information that she provided me only helped me surpass them without losing my mind and my composure.
Suddenly the door opened again and I saw Demitry coming inside. He was looking stressed still calmed. “How is she?” I immediately asked him in a worried tone. He didn’t answer me and came closer to me. He sat down near me on the bed. My eyes never left his face. He leaned towards me and I wrapped my hand around his neck. He hid his face in the crook of my neck. “She is fine and sleeping now”, he answered me after a few seconds. I took a breath of relief and rubbed my face on the side of his head. “Do you want to talk?” I asked him after a while when I felt him relax in my embrace. He had wrapped his hand around my waist. “There is something that I need to tell you, Mariam but you should understand one thing first. You are free to take any decision”, he said in a low but stiff tone. “What is it, Demitry?” I asked him in a low but calm voice this time. "Rehaana.... she is suffering from blood cancer", I felt that someone had knocked all the air out of my body.
